3G iPhone codenamed N82? Tablet?

Erica Sadun has been doing some digging around and found an extra platform in the iPod/iPhone lineup.  Along with the current iPod Touch (N45), iPhone (M68) and a "simulator"- which means the SDK will likely contain a simulator), she found reference a currently unknown "N82".   Could this be the new 3G iPhone set to be released later this year?  Or perhaps this could be a reference to a new Apple Tablet or Mac Touch?  Or maybe Apple putting out a Touch OS release (no) for Nokia's N82 Hardware?

Perhaps we'll know on the 26th?

Wow, that sure sounds promising!

It's not a reference to the 16 Gig iPhone?

the 16GB iPhone...doubtful, because there would be an additional designation for larger iPod Touch as well

I highly doubt that a "N82"

5854

I highly doubt that a "N82" would succeed a "M68," although "N82" does seem to be sequential to "N45."  Still, this is the first I've ever heard about internal designations for Apple products; do you know more about how other lines are numbered?  If, for instance, the iMac iterations were J17, J52, J85, J117, etc, then we would have more information from which to extrapolate the meaning of "N82"--specifically that product lines have letters and that numbers represent hardware revisions.

I'd be very surprised if

4247

I'd be very surprised if they release a completely new form factor without discontinuing an old one. Apple really likes (REALLY LIKES) to use as few display panel SKUs as possible (witness the retooling of a pretty perfect 2G iPod nano in order to keep to just two different iPod display SKUs). That's why the MacBook Air has as big of a footprint as it does. I think if we were going to see some kind of a 10" tablet, the MacBook Air would have had a 10" touch screen (and we would have seen them knock off one of the other display sizes). Granted, I think that a 7" or a 10" touchscreen tablet (iPod Touch Jumbo powered by an intel silverthorn) would be an awesome development. But that isn't going to happen anytime soon.

I have not heard what it is

4752

I have not heard what it is in reference to, but I do know that 3G is going to blow it out the box. I predict that companies and individuals will flock to the 3G iPhone in unbelievable numbers. This is going to be the first real mobile platform. Apple is set to change the world! The possibilities for apps on the iPhone are endless. We will be writing documents and making presentations right from our pocket.

If the iPhone designation

4550

If the iPhone designation starts with M, and the iTouch designation starts with N, then (because I want it) I am cheering for the N82 designating the tablet. I buy what was said about streamlining the display supply chain, but really buy the convergence of technologies:

  • OSX lite is a platform. Multitouch is spreading.
  • Remember resolution independence? If you are taking the burden off of developers so they design one widget/app for any screen: imac, iphone, or itablet, this is the way.
  • Widget distribution system on Apple webstie evolves to itouch software update and control (also described on TUAW), that's how apps will be distrubuted and controlled.
  • SDK now, bump capacity of iTouch and iPhone so that apps can manage real files.
  • MBA with real but small processor

All this points to another waiting period while Apple waits for the hardware prices to fall and for the app market to stabilize. I want it now. But Apple will wait and see. I loved MS's Oragami videos but I think that iTouch not the Zune + Win Mobile are the best path to get to that package.

Couldn't it just be

4960

Couldn't it just be referring to the MBA?  It has the same touch interface...

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone...

Shhhh! Don't tell anyone... OK?

This is... just as it looks. The "MacTouch Pro" will not hit the stores until later this summer. Code name "N82" is an exciting piece of art, beauty, and function. It will be geared toward students and traveling professionals. The built in large screen keyboard is awesome, and the bluetooth give way to the use of the Apple wireless keyboard. Pray for zero delays!

Features:
- Intel Silverthorn processor
- 3G Wireless connection w/ SIM
- Bluetooth
- WiFi -802.11N
- Multi Touch 7" screen
- (1) USB 2.0 480mb
- (1) FireWire 800mb
- Micro DVI
- I/O Audio Ports
- MagSafe Power
- 1.8" 80GB HD ***Option 64GB Solid State

5748

LOL - so they can fit firewire 800 on this tiny thing but not on a MacBook Air hey! I don't think so.

And let's hope it would continue to use the iPod connector so you can actually charge the thing in a car!

Yes, I know I can't spell silverthorne.

N82 ..??

Its for the Ipod "Retro". A

4351

Its for the Ipod "Retro". A new Ipod that will have the look and feel of the gen 5 ipods but be bigger and bulker . It will have 5 gigs of hard drive space and 8 hours of battery life and only cost $399.99 (US) or $ 799.99 (Euros) Ha! What a bargain. Its Apple's way of saying "Stay Cool..Old School". They already have a Fiest song picked out and they are marketing it to trend setters and senior citizens. It should have overly large font and easy to read bulky buttons for those who cant see well. One problem though, none of the accessories for the ipod will work. You will have to buy all new chargers and FM Transmitters, but that shouldn't be a problem. After Apple sends a firmware update to all Ipods, none of those accessories will work for anyone- so everyone can be happy. Good Times!

It could possibly be that

5541

It could possibly be that they are going to release a MacBook Touch.

If so, the SDK apps that are being developed for the iPod Touch/iPhone will also work on the MacBook Touch once it is released, the MacBook Touch will have the same interface with the icons on the home screen, hence the SDK apps working for it also.

I obviously have no idea if this will happen or not, but if so I'd love it to have:

6"-7" Touch screen with same iPod touch/iPhone interface

Games right off iTunes that will work with all touch screen devices

32Gb+ (Flash memory)

Bluetooth

Wifi (B,G,N)

1GHz Processer

1 USB 2.0 port

I'm a hoping it is a

4749

I'm a hoping it is a designation for a larger hand held device, still of the iPod mold but with a larger display.    With Mobile OS such a device could easily fill the needs of people who want a Newton 2, peopel who want a larger iPod to better view movies and the general PDA crowd.    Mobile OS is the lube that would allow such a device to mold itself into a variety of uses.

As to what it consists of, here is a wild guess:

Silverthorne - Mostly because Apple really seems excited about it.

512 Meg of RAM as the standard allotment.

4.5 inch screen - what I want is a device that is not much more that a half inch wider than the current Touch and wouold give us a machine only slightly longer.   Hopefully they can squeze HD in there.

Flash RAM 32 GB - it is a good starting point.

Flash Expansion - yah I know not Apple style but I beleive it is important for the versatility that the device needs.

Bluetooth - fully supported.   If Apple can't get this right then really what is the point.   Build powerful flexible devices that can't communicate?

WiFi

An RF expansion port or flexible radio.  - The idea here is to allow users to choose from Cell, WiMax or whatever is their posion.   There is the real possibility that this could be done as a software defined radio.

USB port.   - Just one which should be fine on this sort of device unlike the AIR.

As you can see rather thin but frankly that is the idea.    Just enough hardware to funciton well as a media / internet tablet.   That gives  you enough to also function in the PDA and Netwon modes.    It doesn't blow up the units size excessively but meets the users need.

Apple has built two thing

5146

Apple has built two thing around their OS X Mobile platform: a phone and a music player. But there is another thing they can do around this same platform: a GPS. They will need a slightly larger screen and a more powerful version of GoogleMap with onboard maps and voice support. For me there is a clear possibility that this can be the N82 model. It would explain why they upgrade both the iPhone and the iPod recently. Of course, the N82 would integrate iPod functionality...

I know u admins follow this

4544

I know u admins follow this when can we expect them to announce the 3g iPhone? What are the odds this announcment comes at the febuary press confrence? When can we then expect it to be on shelves? Please advise me I am dying for some advise / information.

Do you think the 3g iPhone will replace the Edge model or become an alternate option?

Also I know it is a bit off topic but what do you admins think the odds are if slingbox coming to the iphone? I want it so badly. I may get the AT&T Tilt if the iPhone 3g does not get slingbox.

We don't think that the 3G

4956

We don't think that the 3G iPhone is coming this month.  May-June to coincide with the Japan launch - which will be one of the 1st in Asia (Australia/HK-China?).

We think the 3G will co-exist witht he EDGE model for awhile.  Because of the different speed and different download capability, there will be a price of the plan premium.  Maybe $20/month more?

We have heard that Sling is working on a iPod/iPhone client.  IT would rock - the only thing getting in the way is Apple not wanting to eat into AppleTV revenues.  Which would suck.

Admin you said that you

5247

Admin you said that you think the 3G iPhone will come out in May or June but do you mean it will be on shelves in May or June or do you mean they will preview it in May or June?

Also how long should the FCC approval proccess take this time around (assuming everything is working properly)?

Please advise...

Silverthorne way too much

5646

Silverthorne way too much power for an iPhone or iPod touch. Maybe Menlow - Silverthorne's sucessor might me okay but the processors in use today use a tiny fraction of the power of Silverthorne.

Moorestown is the successor

5746

Moorestown is the successor of Silverthorne + Poulsbo. It has 50% less power consumption and 50% better GPU performance.

Even Moorestown will still use WAY more power than today's iPhone processor.

Battery life is important guys....

I had the N82 since it launched (attended the premiere of this device along with several bloggers at Nokia HQ in Finland) on November 14 and to me, this is the best smart phone in the world.
