Apple execs book flight time for mystery product, 'not iPhone', bafflement follows

We’re deciphering Apple executives and their fourth quarter statements right now - but the initial take away at this stage is the company’s mysterious admission that “air freight costs” are set to rise "abnormally" in the company's first quarter.

Now, we know we’re all incredibly curious as to just what Apple’s hatching up for its future product road map, but company executives have so far declined to disclose just what it is they’re planning to send into flight. And they don't seem to want anyone else to be too excited about it - so ditch those tablet rumour-writing pens, folks.

All execs have said at this point is that these increased air freight costs are “nothing to do with iPhone”, and “are about getting units into the channel for the holiday.”

Units of what? This is bound to inflame the Apple rumour machine.

Specifically, the exchange ran as follows:

Toni Sacconaghim an analyst at Sanford Bernstein asked about Apple's stated availability issues as per the iPhone 3GS, questioned if component acquisition problems were to blame and asked, "Related to that you had also mentioned that air freight you expected to go up next quarter as a reason for gross margins, I’m not sure if that was in relation to phones or anything else but perhaps you can address that as well?"

Tim Cook confirmed demand for iPhone 3GS simply exceeded supply, "I think you would probably put that in your first category of a good old fashioned demand issue which is a nice problem to have in the scheme of things. Now, because it was outstripping supply it creates component shortages as we go out to the market to secure more components," he said, confirming the problem is pretty much resolved (Ed note: hopefully, unless everyone in China buys an iPhone this month).

Then he hit us with the rumour-raiser: "The air freight is not related to the iPhone so these are unrelated topics. But, generally speaking the air freight is planned to get enough units in to the channel in time for the holidays and is necessary for that reason."

Sacconaghi speculated that Q1 air freight costs most likely are often higher than in other quarters, as company management move assets around the planet to deal with Christmas demand. Then CFO Oppenheimer hit us with a fact to leave us baffled: "It’s more than normal so you’re correct that in general we spend more in freight in Q1. However, this increase is larger than usual. I’m sorry I can’t be specific on the product but it’s an abnormal sequential increase."

So, just to clarify, Apple is spending more on air freight in the future quarter as it struggles to cope with an "abnormal sequential increase". We're wondering what this could be, dismissing an iPhone nano, tablet, new Mac and so on, we find ourselves speculating on an iPod touch with a camera. Though we're not sure the new name - abnormal sequential increase - will catch on...

We love Seeking Alpha, by the way.

PS: To cite Shakespeare, this could of course turn out to be much ado about nothing, but if it's not connected to keeping iPhone inventories strong, then what is the cause? Curious, isn't it?

A cheap (lower future margins) AppleTV with more iTunes content I hope.

or more expensive aviation gas (oil aint $45 a barrel any more) and a falling dollar. gets you the same products at "abnormally' higher freight costs q/q

indeed

Apple will not release an iPod touch with a camera until at least after the New Year. It just simply isn't going to happen.

Yeah, that's our best speculation. Let's face it, it could be international power adaptors for Bolivian iPhones, when it all comes down to it - or even packaging, but it's definitely a big enough deal Apple had to disclose it.

Oh Jonny, honestly! Where's the fun in that?

If it's something big and they're expecting huge volume, it is not the tablet. Unless it's the tablet, and it's awesome!

I predict new iMac's, Mac Mini and a new low end MacBook this week. Possibly as early as tomorrow. My guess is that the freight may be associated with that.

My bet is on a mac book replacement -a Mac book Air LC. $599-$799. This will be in range of higher end netbooks and the perfect K-12 / College, E-reader all in one on the go machine. Maybe even with a handle like the first clamshells. DVD drive an external option, This would put Apple 'miles ahead' of the low end Laptops, as it might even sport a 64 SSD drive, and maybe USB 3.0, and the latest wifi standard....

Ipad, I -slate or what ever it's going to be called - Available in Feb/March

Rumors point to a ipod touch release. A rumor is that apple only made a few months of current models, and apple wants to make the ipod touch with camera in full production by christmas. I agree to this speculation. Unless there is a whole new product by christmas, the ipod touch with camera is the only thing that is abnormal.

I just bought one :-(

Aren't they due for an update? Those 30" boxes are pretty unwieldy. Plus if they offer more sizes again, that would be a sizable shipment.

bingo!

What about the rumor from a while ago about the displays with an Apple TV built in. This would be a product that would fall outside of their typical product release schedule and would definitely need to be released before the holiday shopping season.

Monitors ship via sea, not air. They are too large for cost effective air transport.

My bet is on a beautiful aluminium unibody flying machine, with voice control and an iPod. I think I saw one during a test flight very late last night.

I think that this will be the ipod touch camera. Rumors say that apple only made a few months of the current models, and apple wants the ipod touch with camera in full production by christmas. I agree to this. unless there is a whole new product by christmas, this is probably the ipod touch camera. that is the only thing that is abnormal.

One thing that has drifted off the radar — how's that deal with LG progressing? Could it be something that's big and works with Apple TV?

Apple paid LG $500m in cash in January. It's October. Seems like the right timeframe for a product launch. Totally speculative, but if we're talking substantial air freight, it could well be a larger item like an integrated AppleTV / display.

I think Apple would get a lot of stick if it is an iPod Touch; there would be a lot of angry customers and it could damage their sales to have such rapid product lifespans. I don't think they are that stupid.

The increase is because the MacBooks going to colours

so instead of 1 set of boxs for the product it'll be 3 or 4

It's obvious. They are finally shipping the sexbots. Took em long enough.

An Abnormal Sequential Increase can only mean one thing....an Apple Penis Enlarger.

This could be big...really big.

lulz

Apple is going to roll out it's new line of apple-based Bling. Each Necklace will have flash-drives built in, for the Ghetto on-the-go. The lower tier products will start out with prices close to $400.

The Steve Jobs Clones are being deployed.

Clearly, what this is pointing to is a shift in shipping methodology from traditional aircraft to backyard helium balloons. Apple is simply jumping on the 'you can't buy buzz like that' bandwagon. Look forward to a blimp carring 10,000 Ipods getting away over the pacific and the news media going into a frenzy.

Its the APPLE STATION:

Apple TV - Full HD + Game Station - Plays all IPhone Games

Hmmmm

In my honest opinion, this was the Gem of the Call:

Gene Munster – Piper Jaffray

So when you go from exclusive to multiple carriers, you wouldn’t necessarily see change in pricing that you are charging the carrier? Is that correct?

Timothy D. Cook

That’s correct.

Equally mysterious and secretive has been Microvision's unveiling of mini laser pico projectors. Could it be?
