Too many compromises. Hmmm

Too many compromises.

Hmmm let's see: just one USB port, battery is not user replacible, ram is fixed on the board (2GB), no ethernet (dongle would use the single USB port), no dual-link dvi, *very* slow 80GB HDD, no firewire (*sigh*), glossy display.

I do understand that there alway will be some compromises on ultra-portables, but that's just too much. For me the showstoppers are: battery, RAM (not upgradeable) and the single USB port. Damn just make it 0.2 inch thicker and give us these features and I would buy one in a hearbeat.

4200 RPM does not mean

4200 RPM does not mean slower.

Keep in mind the smaller disks do not have to spin as fast to read the same number of sectors as the larger drives do.

For those who don't have

For those who don't have wifi and want the portability of macbook air then i suggest investing in a usb ethernet adaptor that's available (similar to the usb modem adaptor for those who don't have broadband) and those who need additional usb ports then i would suggest a usb 2.0 hub as well. Oh, and if people may have forgotten, those who need a optical drive, well there's a couple options for you as well, but hopefully you already know about those... I'm just hoping for a similar external blu-ray dvd drive to come along ala external superdrive that apple made!

To Bazzzz: 0.2 inches

To Bazzzz:

0.2 inches thicker and you get a Macbook Pro...

0.2 Inches AND 2 and a half

0.2 Inches AND 2 and a half pounds.

I think this Wall Mossberg

I think this Wall Mossberg guy Is great.

He is not overwhelmed, and he shouldn’t be!

But these products that Apple just announced was pretty amassing. Think of the thinness and a ultra small technology they have been putting into the Macbook Air. There are some things that the product is missing, like merchant in other posts, but what the hell!

It's shiny and slim, and possible to expand in the future if you need more usb ports or what so ever!

Also no security slot for

Also no security slot for keeping the laptop locked down, and no way to play dvd's (maybe even cd's?) without an external optical drive. The wireless harnessing of another computers disc drive only works with cd roms! At least, that's what's been reported so far..

It would be a different story if the laptop was say... cheaper than the macbooks, but why would i spend an extra $500 and lose half the features all for just a slimmer profile? Macbooks in my opinion are pretty dang slim already, anything thinner and I start to worry about its structural stability.

My take is that the Mac Air will struggle to find a market. To be sure, they will take a small slice of the market just because it is sleek and cool. I’m not convinced, however, the Mac Air is really for road warriors. It has an insufficient amount of disk and lacks an adequate number of ports.
