Want to hook up your new Mac directly to an HDMI-equipped HDTV?  You'll need an adapter.  Apple isn't selling them, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Amazon and through its partners are now selling the adapter cables for $19 plus $4.99 shippingGizmodo ran some tests on the Mini DisplayPort-HDMI adapter and found it worked better than Apple's solution of Mini DisplayPort-DVI Adapter to DVI-HDMI adapter.  Plus this one is cheaper.

Monoprice has them for less but they are currently on backorder.

DUDE F - Apple and their Mini DisplayPort BS.  I had to -pay $100 for a dual link adapter.  It shipped over 2 months late and still has shitloads of problems.  Anyone who tries to use the adapter knows it is a huge fail for high end graphics people.  And now they have Mini Display port on Mac Pros?  FAIL FAIL FAIL

Mini DisplayPort?  Biggest Apple Fail Ever

i assume it doesn't do sound???? please let us know.

monoprice.com mini-dvi to hdmi for $8.00 if you have a Mac Mini or previous generation Mac.

yeah, completely different interface. but thanks for playing.

yeah, pointing out similar functionality for older macs. Thanks for not reading, Troll.

I'm still scratching my head over the lack of a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable or adapter.

AUDIO: This adapter will support audio only if your source device allows audio output through the Mini DisplayPorts interface. If you're not sure, please check with the manufacturer or website, to confirm if your device allows audio out through the Mini-DP interface.

Which I'm assuming means "no", as I don't believe the Mini DisplayPort on any of the Macs has audio output. Someone should create an adapter that connects to the Mini DP, but has a separate cable that would allow the optical output connection.

Oh well, I can dream.

Is there anything like this in the UK yet? I've checked amazon's UK store, but nothing. I'm looking at monoprice.com, but they keep putting their date back, and I don't know if they ship to UK - not that I would be willing to pay the 40 odd dollars that they would charge for transatlantic shipping...

I believe Apple does support audio out over mini DisplayPort because I saw a Mac mini connected to the new 24" monitor without an audio cable, but it had sound coming out the speakers.

The new 24" outputs audio through USB. The link cable between the new 24" monitor and the Mac is a mini DisplayPort plus a USB cable. The USB handles both USB and audio and the video goes through the DP.

At least this is what I understanding.

that is regular display port, won't work with  Macs

I have a macbook, will this let me connect to my hdmi flat panel and have sound? Looks like the gizmodo test is doing just that.
