Microsoft hurdling sharks with "Gurus"

There's a point where Microsoft goes from annoyingly copying Apple's best stuff well enough to grab marketshare, to today's news where you almost have to pity the lack of any type of real innovation happening there.   The Seinfeld commercial is pretty sad.  While it borrows heavily from the light hearted interaction of the recent Apple commercials, it really doesn't make us want to see any more....ever.   And this is from some Seinfeld junkies.

Microsoft tried to quell the fear/embarrassment from its own internal employees by sending out this email:

This first set of ads features Bill Gates and comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Think of these ads as an icebreaker to reintroduce Microsoft to viewers in a consumer context. Later this month, as the campaign moves into its next phase, we’ll go much deeper in telling the Windows story and celebrating what it can do for consumers at work, at play and on-the-go. At that time, I’ll be back to share more information about our plans to further strengthen the bond between consumers and Windows–one of the most amazing products, businesses and brands of all time, and, with the right tenacity, passion and agility from all of us, a story that has many great chapters to come.

But it gets much worse.  That wasn't even today's most embarassing moment for Microsoft.

Case in point:  Microsoft Gurus...

Microsoft is paying people to hang out at Best Buy and Circuit City (and WalMart?) to try to help people navigate through the quagmire that is Windows Vista.  They of course won't be able to fix any hardware issues...or do much on the software side....but will otherwise be useful.

We can actually see one really helpful area which they can provide assistance.   They will be able to help choose which brand of Windows to buy - there are 6 to choose from!

Oh, in case you aren't shockingly embarrassed for Microsoft yet, does Guru sound like anything you ever heard of from any of Micorosoft's consumer competitors?  Ugh, it is hard to watch.

Why not spend some of that time/$/energy bringing that Photosynth software to the Mac?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

this is just rediculous

im think im officially done with this website. is this not a mac/apple news site? recently i think ive seen more mindless microsoft bashing here than anything actually worth reading. i know you guys just love apple so much and hate microsoft so much but as you know apple would likely not be here without them. i suggest you start writing articles actually worth reading that actually pertain to apple/ mac in some way or i will not be the only to stop reading these pointless articles. come on other readers! comment too do you agree with me?

you know I felt the same way

you know I felt the same way after I wrote it...but you have to admit MS is looking kinda bad lately...and I do have to admit Photosynth looks really cool....but come on, Guru...Genius?

News on competition IS important

44

News about Microsoft, specifically the emulation of Apple marketing and support techniques, is news to the Apple community. Apple and their customers don't live in a vacuum; in fact news about non-Apple products and strategies is useful and a "pro-Apple" take on them can provide a balance against the usual "pro-MS" versions.

I hope they continue covering some news about Microsoft. Though I don't have Microsoft products at home - not even a mouse - doesn't mean I hate Microsoft, I just like a better product. Apple.

.... me, in a meeting. Who says I'm not sensitive?

Do not agree

Sorry trx1701 I could not disagree with you more. First of all your first sentence sounds like Jar Jar Binks so please proofread before making such a profound post. Now this site is not a dry news site but rather a fan site that delivers news. I feel the jabs at Microsoft are well deserved and very entertaining, so 9 to 5 keep up the great work.

Nope. Don't agree. I liked

Nope. Don't agree. I liked the article.

sorry for the poor english

sorry for the poor english but none the less i was a bit overboard and i will always follow this site but i really wish it would be less about mindless ms bashing

It's not mindless

What about people who have stock in Apple? Keeping up with what the competition is doing is important because it can and has had an effect on marketshare. I like to know what the "other guys" are doing because it helps me decide on what to do with all my Apple stock.

I think the guru concept

42

I think the guru concept meshes nicely with PC's Calming Teas. In fact I'm going to ask any MS Guru I see if they're the person I go to to buy Crashytime Chamomile.

WTF?

64

Microsoft Gurus, huh? Call me when Windows actually comes up with an original idea!
