Ballmer: "Apple is only a $500 logo"
Steve Ballmer is making a pretty regular habit of putting his foot in his mouth on Apple's success. He was this week quoted by Techflash as saying:
Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction.
The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment - same piece of hardware - paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that's a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be.
The bad news for Microsoft? We aren't paying that extra $500 for the hardware.
While Apple hardware is the best you can buy, there are other companies that are making some pretty good machines. People who can afford it often choose the MAc because Microsoft's offering is substandard.

that $500 is a premium price. While Apple hardware is the not the best you can buy.
Agreed, Balmer got it right on the nail.
You are paying for a logo & a pretty box. Macs are pretty decent, but there is nothing that justifies the $500 Apple tax.
The 90's Mac Graphing Calculator is easily worth the $500 bucks!
doesn't that new PC competitor to the MBA cost more than the MBA when similarly spec'd? If so, doesn't that sorta argue against the premium tax in some significant segments?
The base model costs more and cant even get similarly speced. The max is a 1.4 ghz processor and intel integrated video.
That is but ONE example. I am a Mac user and have been for some time. As a convert to Apple I still loathe the Apple 'premium' but you do get what you pay for. The computer works when I turn it on, never needs re-booting, never locks-up - no need to worry about getting a virus and spyware, adware and the like, fast even on VERY old hardware and a general UI that is fast, easy to navigate and simply beautiful to look at.
I do oppose the silly price for that logo but they CAN get away with that because the hardware and software work so seamlessly - not to mention the stability and ease of use of the actual OS - even on my Acer One NetBook.
I will keep buying Apple gear until they fail to offer something that others do not at a less expensive price. Is it expensive? No one would argue that - but it is worth that extra cost for a much better overall experience? YES!
D
It doesn't matter which hardware you use (Apple is the best made bar none). As long as it doesn't have Windows on it people seem happy with it. Add windows and the hardware is worthless or close to it. I own Macs only.
Yes, you are right. We using macs and ballmer well known jumping monkey, such a idiot. PC's with windows using people and people using macs.
whoa! was that typed on a PC? In Windows software? There's gotta be SOME explanation...
thats F***NG FUNNY!
First of all, Ballmer is on drugs if he thinks that a Dell Latitude is the same chunk of hardware as a MacBook. Just look at broadly reported customer satisfaction numbers and you'll see that's simply not true.
Secondly, Ballmer must remember that people aren't just buying hardware when they buy a computer. If that were the case, Windows wouldn't be bundled in. Instead, people are buying a package, that includes software. That has to be considered as part of the price.
Finally, Ballmer must know that Mac sales aren't down relative to the industry. Yes, the tide has turned back, but that's across the industry... and not just for Apple, but for Dell, HP, and... Microsoft.
Sadly, Ballmer has become merely a poor spokesman, always defending himself and his company, but failing at actually improving his business and his company's relationship with his customers (which, by the way, includes a large proportion of Mac users).
The big question is when will Microsoft shareholders say that Microsoft isn't producing enough, and force this guy out of a job. I'd think that it's getting pretty close. It's clear that Microsoft isn't a leader and isn't moving forward. Their biggest move of late has been proposing to buy Yahoo. And that didn't work.
totally aggree. Notice how Balmer never talks about their stuff actually being better? He just says apple stuff is too expensive. In other words, obviously we are never going to be able to claim that our software or hardware is better, cause apple are always a few years ahead of everyone. The best we can do is convince people that our cheap crap is gunna do a similar job and they don't need the amazing computer experience apple offers.

Spec for spec, Apple computers are not $500 more expensive than a Dell or HP.
Ballmer has been predicting doom and gloom for Apple for years. This is the same guy who said the iPod would fail miserably; that Apple would only sell, at most, 500 iPhones. He was wrong then and he’s equally wrong now, because he doesn’t get it. He has no clue as to why people love Apple. It’s design, quality, and end-to-end user experience. People appreciate quality and will always be willing to pay a little more for it. Ballmer assumes people are idiots because he can’t see that the difference is much more than the Apple logo.
This is a good thing. Having someone like Ballmer at the helm of Microsoft ensures that they will continue to issue buggy, bloated products, treat their customers like dirt and engage in monopolistic bullying of other companies. And Apple will continue to grab market share from them.
While I agree that Balmer is one of the biggest idiots to head a large corporation I disagree the Apple will continue to grab marketshare. Apple really doesn't care about marketshare. They care about margins and profit for shareholders. MS and Apple have different business models and address different market segments. Most of this back and forth and stupid comment flaming can be avoided just by understanding this.
MS sells software to hardware vendors who compete for the bottom 80% of the market (sub $1000) and Apple makes software and hardware and compete for the top 20% of the market (above $1000). What is amazing is Apple has over 50% of the market they compete in. Comparing a PC to a Mac based on hardware specs is stupid. The difference is in the software and experience - not just the silicon and plastic.
Having been a MS fanboy for 15 years I ditched Windows 4 years ago with the whole Longhorn blunder. I'll need a very compelling reason to abandon OS X in favor of anything else. Everything just works and the support calls from my parents dropped to about 2 a year. Not worrying about being infected with viruses and malware, and using intuitive software that FEELS faster because it is designed better and actually usable and not just a bunch of check box feature lists is why I pay a "$500 premium" for a logo.
Suck it Balmer.
Not to mention I just created a kick arse Keynote that could never have been done in PowerPoint.
The only reason I own a Mac laptop is because they can now run windows! The Mac OS is C-rap IMHO. Why do Apple users come across as such immature, pathetic individuals?
Written on a Macbook Pro on Windows 7
I guess you're not using Windows 7 Home, Pro, or Extreme Edition. Because those kind of suck versus Ultimate.
Personally, I love Ultimate. It'll totally worth the $800. And with a little IE8 magic (known as "IE7 mode"), I can create a desktop Widget that puts the ZuneManor web site on my AERO desktop! Take THAT, Mac OS, with your CMD-. and 400k MFS file system! Open-Apple-activate, be gone!
And to think I once believed it was impossible to write something without reading it.
You're not making sense. If you hate the Mac OS and only want to use Windows, then why did you pay this extra $500 for the same hardware...just the logo? If you DID pay for more than the logo, then your purchase is tacit proof that you understand it's better hardware.
didn't you just say you were an Apple user...?
You have to pay Dell close to $500 to get Microsoft's logo OFF their computer....
Does Ballmer remind anyone else of Biff from Back to the future? Looks and personality...
I can never stop laughing when starts a conversation when someone asks him a question.
He starts of at a fast high pitched voice while looking at the corner of a ceiling as if he is looking at imaginary person then slows to down to inaudible voice mumble.
Says the person who doesn't use Apple products.
Other companies besides Apple make decent computers, but if they don't run OS X, what's the point? I am a STRONG Apple advocate. Call me a cult follower, a fanboy, whatever you like. Fact is, I use both OS X and Windows on a daily basis. You know, "Windows because I have to, Mac because I want to." I complain about Windows idiosyncrasies to Windows IT experts, and what do I get? "You're right, Windows sucks." I load my Mac up with all kinds of 3rd party software and system modifications with nary a problem. My CLEAN Windows PC I use for work keeps apologizing for Microsoft Word needing to quit. So, what it comes down to is this: I have nothing against the other computer makers, except they don't run Mac OS X.
Just two words for Ballmer: Dell Adamo
You guys just don't get it.... Apple is 20% about hardware bells and whistles, 30% about looks, and 50% about the fact that Apple OS is one of the most efficient, streamlined, user friendly, integrated, stable, and common-sense driven operating system in the world right now. That is what makes an Apple, even an iPhone (especially with the upcoming 3.0 firmware), stand apart from the rest. It just works.
Schmuck-ass idiot. He always has been, always will be.
