Confirming the earlier WSJ report, Methodist Le Bonheur Hospital today said that Steve Jobs did, in fact, recieve a liver transplant. They went on to confirm that he was the sickest patient of his blood type at the time the donor organ became available and that he was recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.
It appears that Jobs OK'ed the press release.

Steve Jobs Receives Liver Transplant
|
James D. Eason, M.D., program director at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute and chief of transplantation confirmed today, with the patient's permission, that Steve Jobs received a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in partnership with the University of Tennessee in Memphis.
Mr. Jobs underwent a complete transplant evaluation and was listed for transplantation for an approved indication in accordance with the Transplant Institute policies and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policies.
He received a liver transplant because he was the patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available. Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.
The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute performed 120 liver transplants in 2008 making it one of the ten largest liver transplant centers in the United States. We provide transplants to patients regardless of race, sex, age, financial status, or place of residence. Our one year patient and graft survival rates are among the best in the nation and were a dominant reason in Mr. Jobs’s choice of transplant centers. We respect and protect every patient's private health information and cannot reveal any further information on the specifics of Mr. Jobs's case.

done and dusted
ok so it's official, now lets leave the guy alone and let him recover, f-in media some times don't understand when to leave people alone ( not 9-5 your just posting what media have already forced) sure it's nice to understand why someone is on leave. suppose shareholders or some government agency will launch a investigation now to determine if Job's should have informed the world before he went ahead, most-likely cause him more stress and give him more cancer.
Steve Jobs' Memphis House Looks Empty
I was little bored yesterday and decided to go take a look at the house that the national media have decided is being occupied by Apple CEO Steve Jobs. The backstory, in case you haven't heard, is that Jobs supposedly had a liver transplant in Memphis and has purchased a house here. The house in question, according to several websites, is on Morningside Place, only a few blocks from my own extensive Midtown holdings.
Morningside Place is a lovely, lovely street, just off Parkway East. Large oaks shade the winding cul de sac. A few children play on the median. From the street, 36 Morningside looks empty — no window treatments, no cars in the drive, no signs of occupancy. It doesn't even look like a "mansion." But from space, via satellite, it's much more impressive, certainly a worthy joint for a man of Jobs' means. They probably even have wireless.
But there's no security, at least none that was visible. I did read that there were cameras installed in the trees. If so, they got a nice shot of me jumping out of my ancient 4-Runner and snapping a pic of the place. Hi, Steve! Call me — 575-9450 — and we'll do lunch. I'd be happy to show you around the Bluff City.

Liver Transplantation
I'm a physician and I wanted to add my two cents here. In the past, a patient's status for a liver transplant was determined using the "Childs-Pugh" score. This system could allow for certain subjective symptoms such as severity of ascites (fluid build-up in the abdomen) or encephalopathy (altered mental status from liver failure) to effect where a person was on the list. The fact that these subjective factors were used led to some transplant centers getting their patients to the head of the list ahead of sicker patients.
Due to this, a new system based on the "MELD Score" (Model for End Stage Liver Disease) was created. This system is soley based on objective laboratory findings and involves a complex calculation based on a) INR (how thin your blood is - your liver creates the proteins that allows your blood to clot), b) creatinine - a measure of how your kidneys are working - liver failure can lead to kidney failure; and c) Total Bilirubin - one of the substances the liver normally clears when it is working well but doesn't when it is failing. This score which ranges from 6-40 determines your place on the list.
So, there are basically two scenarios - either Steve was very, very sick - much sicker then anyone would have predicted when he first went out on leave OR he has a less common blood type. If Steve had a less common blood type such as type A or B (O is the most common) this could have led to a situation where there was a liver available in his blood type and there was no one sicker then him with that blood type. This issue can be a double-edged sword as there are also fewer donors from less common blood type groups.
I would say the only way a billionaire could game the system in the US would be to move to a region (organ transplant is handled regionally) where the wait was shorter. There are many excellent transplant centers in California - I just suspect the wait is longer there (or Steve's obsession with privacy came into play). This practice is not unusual or limited to billionaires, though the travel expenses can be very high - he will need to keep going back for follow-ups.
