Magic Mouse first impressions coming in
First, iFixit does their thing and takes it apart. Pretty interesting look inside the device. Gizmodo had first impressions yesterday. Next, CNET's initial thoughts, below, mirror our earlier concerns.

WTF? The side buttons sucked!
Yeah the side button were terrible, they where ether difficult to press or too sensitive. I've had mine switched off the whole time.
I love the side buttons. I use them to activate Expose. It's quick, easy and I don't have to take my hands off the mouse to do it. You guys must have limp wrists.
Un-shocking-believable ! HOW on earth is then Apple advertising the Magic Mouse as "it does much more than any mouse has ever done before" ?? That's an utter lie !
I don't know what's got into Apple but I honestly feel that their urge for minimizing everything is going a bit too far. First the iPod Shuffle loses its buttons, now the Magic Mouse loses the most important features, ie. one button access to Dashboard, Expose, Spaces !
What is wrong with you Apple ??! Don't you care about people who have been working with a Mighty Mouse for years now and swearing every alternate day at that horrible little ball gathering dirt and what not ?? Don't you care about their workflow ?? Is this how you replace a bad product ? By introducing something revolutionary at the cost of taking away the best of its features ???
Unbelievable ! I'm sorry but no sale from here.
So your Magic Mouse has arrived and you already have thrown away your old Mighty Mouse?
Nah the noob is just venting steam cuz some buttons were lost. Thats what happens when people get their expectations really, really high about new stuff.
My wishlist (maybe via software update possible?)
1) swiping should be with ONE finger only
2) zoom should via PINCH like on iPhone
3) Dashboard etc access should be possible by a SQUEEZE on the side of the mouse, even without a button or holding down 2 fingers on top etc....
to much to wish for?
This review makes me think this is a bad product. I don't see what has been gained here. I can only see this type of functionality working if you replaced the mouse with a static track pad - like the one you have on a laptop but independent of. The design is pretty but looks impractical. Just as I suspected the mouse moving about as you attempt to swipe its top is a problem. Just as more is not always better, so it would seem less is not always better too.
My Mighty Mouse pea ball loses the ability to scroll in a direction (usually down) whenever my hands get too sweaty--have to clean it and that is a pain. Nice to lose the pea.
Its a nipple ^.^
No, it's a clit ^_^
I think you've got to remember who's going to be using them - it's obviously designed more for casual users rather than power users. I'm guessing anyone who needs the other functionality will just buy another mouse, you've got options, Apple aren't forcing you to use it. All in all I think it's a nice piece of industrial design which follows Apple's ethos - looks sexy as hell but cuts features to achieve aforementioned sexiness
had a feeling that this mouse wasn't going to be so great........dunno what it is but when it comes to the mouse Apple fails, at least imo. From the get go when I first seen it I thought that it looked too small and sleek. And the whole holding ctl button while zooming in and out seem dumb to me.
Aside from that the mouse does incorporate a lot of new and innovated features, but in all honesty all I keep thinking is that its a mouse, all I ever really need one for is to scroll up and down, point and click....oh and right click(something imo apple never got right).
On a side note; it just seems that Apple and the world are on a whole "touch craze" I mean sure touch anything is cool, but what is wrong with buttons? Especially when functionality trumps appearance.
I spend so much time on my laptop that I prefer the multitouch trackpad over even a mouse. I'd love a multitouch trackpad that just sites on the desktop to replace a mouse.
I swung by the Apple Store to check these out, but not in stock yet. I guess I misunderstood the news about availability. I was going to pre-order one of these on Amazon, but think I'll hold off. When I do use a mouse, the logitech MX performance is fantastic. I like buttons and wheels. ;-)
the first impression is that it lacks, it looks like they sacrificed ergonomics for esthetics which is a huge mistake in this kind of devices, also sacrificed practicality for innovation, sure they can latter on add the expose gesture with a 2 finger swipe up with a software update but why not make these features available from the beginning? It's true what someone commented above "We are not forced to buy this mouse" and I know a lot of other companies like Logitech or even Microsoft will come up with the same touch technology applied to their products but at least we will have other options, for now is no surprise that Apple's weakness are mice and I sure wish they correct this problem because I love Apples sense of design and innovation.
My theory, and this is just a theory, is that they weren't finished with the software. The features are really lacking and I don't see any reason for a multi-touch surface with so few functions. I think there will be an update in the future to allow a lot more than just scrolling and going back and forth on web pages/iTunes/iPhoto. Also, how stupid is it that they advertise the zooming as a feature of the Magic Mouse when you can do this with any scroll wheel and have been able to for a long time.
Yes, you are totally right--control-scroll is an ancient feature that works with any mouse (also on laptops). Cheesy of Apple to promote that (especially since they don't even have a resolution-independent graphics system yet).
It was pretty obvious it wasn't comfortable to hold when you saw it. It's way too low. Your palm should be able to rest on it.
