Hurrah, it’s the MultiTouch Magic Mouse
In a wave of announcements which saw the term Apple shoot into the top ten trend topics on Twitter as Apple Stores worldwide shut down in a synchronised tease, Apple today introduced its all-new wireless Magic Mouse, the first mouse to use MultiTouch technology, the same tech used on the iPhone, iPod touch and MacBook range.
Just as in those products, this will let you navigate your Mac using intuitive finger gestures. Instead of mechanical buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the £55/$69Magic Mouse constitutes a seamless Multi-Touch surface.
It makes it a breeze to scroll through long documents, pan across large images or swipe to move forward or backward through a collection of web pages or photos.
“Apple is the MultiTouch leader, pioneering the use of this innovative technology in iPhone, iPod touch and Mac notebook trackpads,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “Apple's Multi-Touch technology allows us to offer an easy to use mouse in a simple and elegant design.”
Magic Mouse features a touch-sensitive enclosure that allows it to be a single or multi-button mouse with advanced gesture support.
Magic Mouse works for left or right handed users and multi-button or gesture commands can be easily configured from within System Preferences.
The Magic Mouse laser tracking engine provides a smooth, consistent experience across more surfaces than a traditional optical tracking system. It uses Bluetooth wireless and works from up to 10 metres from your Mac.
The mouse also includes an advanced power management system that works with Mac OS X to automatically switch to low power modes during periods of inactivity. The wireless Magic Mouse is powered by two AA batteries which are included.
The new mouse ships as standard with the new iMac and will be made available through Apple’s various retail channels at the end of the month (wonder if this is the doo-dad Apple hopes to fly about and get under a few Mac user’s Christmas trees?)
Magic Mouse requires Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5.8 or later.
As Apple explains the new product on its website: “It began with iPhone. Then came iPod touch. Then MacBook Pro. Intuitive, smart, dynamic. Multi-Touch technology introduced a remarkably better way to interact with your portable devices — all using gestures. Now we’ve reached another milestone by bringing gestures to the desktop with a mouse that’s unlike anything ever before. It's called Magic Mouse. It's the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. And while it comes standard with every new iMac, you can also add it to any Bluetooth-enabled Mac for a Multi-Touch makeover.”

No pinching with 2 fingers yet?
Nice but, what bother putting multi-touch on to of the mouse if you still have to physically move the device around?
I mean, I'm assuming you still have to move the thing across a table right?
I thought u guys were on the cutting edge of tech.
I take it that those who commented down my post are not owners of the original fingerworks trackpad. Ya know....the company Apple bought to get the multi-touch tech?
The readers out there who owns one understands my post and how ultimately silly it is to put multi-touch on top of a mouse you still have to move around. Movement of which will continue to damage the delicate muscles in your arm encouraging repetitive stress injuries. Why is Apple still beating around the bush when it comes to the fingerworks technology?
The original purpose of the fingerworks touchpad with it's multi-touch tech was to help eliminate the damage done by old fashioned mouse movements. If someone who is reading this owns one of those pads I will wager that you would only give up using the device by gunpoint!
Apple is spoon feeding consumers multi-touch bit by bit. Is it possible Apple is trying to wean users away from traditional input technology.....slowly?
Well, I'll continue to use my fingerworks touchpad thank you very much. Wake me when Apple decides to finally go all out with multi-touch in their products.
And no, the little souped up touchpads on their macbooks don't count.
Goods! I like!
Definetly looks interesting and i can't wait to get some hands on time with it, but Im not sure I can let go of my trusty old logitech G9. Though if I finally buy a mac mini to hook up to the tv, it would definetly look freakin nice sitting on my coffee table.
and there is no exposé function as it seems. that's sad...
I wonder if I can still play L4D with this new mouse...
I wonder if I can still play L4D with this new mouse... and what about the two-side buttones exposé and central click dashboard?
I also noticed no expose
Wonder if this thing handles the multi touch internally or whether it sends events to the computer the the touchscreen on the iPhone? Be nice to be able to use CocoaTouch....
I don't know if anyone in the whole world but me noticed this but there is a NEW APPLE REMOTE also.
The old wired mighty mouse is still available
Under a new name . "The apple mouse"
I might have been the only one to notice this but there is a new apple remote too!!
aargh... this sucks.
Please Apple, make a wired multitouch mouse. In a support group for over a 100 Macs, i don't want to spend my time with users -every few months- complaining about dead batteries in a mouse.
just ordered the new mouse, and its gonna replace the mighty mouse with that not so mighty scroll ball.
because all you need to do is wrap a loop of wire around the mouse as an induction loop and put a bed of magnets under your mousing surface. Hook it up right and you'll keep your mouse charged during use. This is a project for MakeMag I suppose.

i know im gunna be one of the first that complains that it is not black. i have a MBP (late 2008 unibody) and there is no white on the thing. i know what many will say, "you have touch capability on your track pad. but i like to use a mouse from time to time, especially if it is like this new magic mouse. i would love to see a black and aluminum version of this mouse. other wise, this thing is SOLID. perfect. perfect. perfect.
You are seriously worried about this? Just like a fanboy to accesorize...
did you guys know there's a new apple remote also?
