Is the October 14th invite a glass trackpad?

It takes the kind of demented mind that is posessed by one Dr. Macenstein to see the cryptic messages Apple is sending us...or so we are hoping.  Dr. Macenstein reports that the October 14th event invite is actually a glass trackpad.  Yes, that glass trackpad!  If you look at it the right way, under certain conditions...well you get the drift.  Set your clock to count down until Tuesday.  BTW, We'll be doing our livepanel, bringing you all of the best liveblogs on one page...check back here Tuesday morning..See Macenstein's image after the break.

if this is true will it have the dock on the trackpad?

No.

It's obviously the back of the lid of the current Macbook Pro. Calm down.

I agree, I won't discount the idea, but... no.

let's be realistic

3037

Hasn't anyone thought about the power consumption of an LCD trackpad? Especially in a device that's made to run off batteries, another nice, but not necessary, power sucker is unlikely. The goal is longer battery life, not less just for something that would be cool.

Second, you'd have trouble seeing the damn thing in any good amount of top light. Reflections would be killer. It's hard enough to see a vertical screen on full brightness when you're outside - imagine a trackpad with no shade.

I have no problems viewing

3031

I have no problems viewing the iPhone screen in extreme light, so I don't see any problem with viewing a similar glass trackpad.

i'm just a tad confused...

so when we say a 'glass trackpad', does that simply mean that the trackpad would be made of glass? or does the glass-ness automatically entail that their will be some sort of screen under said trackpad...

because if there's no screen, then what's so cool about the fact that its glass?

It would be super nice to

3630

It would be super nice to have a lcd touchscreen as a touchpad, but I agree with others that it's power consumption would be too great to have descent batterylife.
But it is possible to use a glass-trackpad without putting a display beneath. Plastic trackpads have a tendensy to get worn spots. Glass doesn't get these spots and will last longer. Don't worry about breakage. I'm sure Apple's engineers will come up with something brilliant.

Glass coated in molten

3329

Glass coated in molten potassium protects breakage from a ball bearing dropped from 20 feet in the air. I'm sure breakage is not an issue for the designers at apple.

mmmm me thinks a iPhone like screen for a touch pad?

Seems more likely that the "glass" trackpad maybe the fisrt fur runners of iPhone like hand and finger controls like stretching photo, quick finger scrolling etc.......

Gestures are already

3131

Gestures are already available on current noteboooks. The reason glass is a better option is because it is not only more durable, but it provides better sensitivity. Especially when you consider Apple's recent patents that discuss the possibilities of being able to determine which finger you are using simply by the footprint it leaves on the touch pad. The screen would be nice... but not even ergonomically sound when you get right down to it. Who really wants to spend all of their time staring at their fingers?

This is totally off topic,

3829

This is totally off topic, but have you guys ever noticed that the Maps App on the iphone is a map pic of the apple HQ in Cupertino!!!

You've got it all wrong

2832

Don't you see? It's not a trackpad at all! It's a compact cooking surface to cater for your food pangs whenver they should strike. Hungry? Happen to have a bite-sized piece of Pollock to hand? Stick it on the ceramic hot plate for a quick, tasty, healthy snack!
Perhaps it doubles as a trackpad too but be warned - your fingers may smell of fish afterwards.

I love you all. I really do.

LOLOL!!!! ur making me want

3333

LOLOL!!!! ur making me want fish! trackpad/micro-range; the trackpad is essential for navigating the pointer on the screen, but the micro-range functionality is good for snacks......LOLOLOL....just watch apple does something crazy like that...

You've got your picture all wrong...

Take a look at the upper 2 corners of the invite and how they are curved...there's silver in each corner...try re-doing your mock-up by using the whole photo...the new trackpad (mockup) then has a black bezel or frame around it. If you look at the shape of the empty slot for the trackpad its also curved at the top. Its a perfect fit and probably the same trackpad size as the current MBP.

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, no! some

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, no! some people drink the apple kool-aid while others need to say no to drugs.

yuck! the fingers!

3031

yeah, I thought the same when I saw them and was very grateful it wasn't a porno pic cause I could actually imagine how the birdy would look like just by seeing those nasty fingers... actually first time pic came out I immediately noticed it was a chinesse man :X
whatever, I still cannot get the glass thing but well, Tuesday is just around the corner (since my weekend is always like all you can drink Fri,Sat and Sun then the hangover and TUESDAY!!)

I tooootally agree... LOL

Nice guess but no cigar

Sorry to disappoint you, but there will be no glass trackpad in the next evolution of the MacBook/ MacBook Pro ranges. This speculation is just wishful thinking. As the images show, the trackpad will grow in size to facilitate multi-touch gestures as per the MacBook Air, but a proper glass touchscreen is being reserved for the tablet device that will premier in January at MacWorld.

That said, this is no cause for disappointment. The new MacBooks are going to be amazing: lighter, thinner, more durable, more powerful, with longer battery life and superb design details. if you look at the keyboard cut-outs and compare the size of individual keys to that of the thickness of the sides, you will soon realize that overall thickness will be reduced to around 20 mm.

yeah, but...

Can anyone tell me ANYTHING the new one would be able to do that my 18-month-old black MB can't? (ok, fw 800 would be nice; so would an illuminated keyboard and card slot; barring those features makign their way to the MB, why would i want one of the new ones, based on functionality? To me, cosmetic changes aren't enough to constitute "amazing". Introduce an LCD touch screen with the kind of functional innovations apple's capable of tying to it, and that would be amazing. Or something else.

AGWKATT, are you anticipating any functional features (not just incremental speed bumps, batt life improvement, or cosmetic changes) on either the MB or the MBP? If so, what?

They look quite like freshly

They look quite like freshly pulled carrots..

The video clearly shows that MacBook will not have glass trackpad.

I think it won't be too hard

3627

I think it won't be too hard for Apple to just chuck an iPhone screen unto the laptop as a trackpad, since they have them so thin on the iPod touch, and huge quantities of them.

Some Math

3228

Hey guys,

I did a little math on the ratios based on the images I saw, and tried to approximate the ratios. I got the following numbers:

1.50 - invite "trackpad/casing"
1.67 - casing in leaked photo
1.77 - 16:9

the 1.50 and 1.77 are definate.. the casing needed to be approximated due to perspective, but it is clear that if the invite shows the casing, it isn't symmetric to the screen on all sides.

This doesn't prove anything but it does put a little more thought into this. How much space is between the bottom of the screen and the bottom of the lid on current MB/MBP's? If that adds more to the shorter end, we'd have a number closer to the 1.50, therefore debunking the rumor of the "glass trackpad" being the image on the invite.

I'll go further. That it is

3737

I'll go further. That it is "roughly" the same aspect ratio as the whole laptop itself isn't anything surprising at all. Because the trackpad should be about the same.

Dr Macenstien? More like Dr. Demento. :)
