Mac Soda is predicting that MacBook invites are on their way today to the media (we aren't holding our breath for ours). It's not a far flung bet, as October 14th is generally considered the upcoming release date for the new MacBooks since Daring Fireball's John Gruber said he'd heard from sources "in the know".
Apple generally gives the press about one week warning to make travel reservations and book hotels and say goodbye to their families....or so we hear.
(Update: Looks like they've had a slight change of heart)
They are taking bets on what will be coming in the event invitation. Favorite so far: Its a Brick House by the commodores.

is it for sure
Is it for sure that there is an event the 14th of october, or are we still on a rumor level?
October 14th is purely the
October 14th is purely the domain of John Gruber. As much as you trust him, it is Oct 14th. Also note, Apple can change schedules at the last moment.
how do we know if there is even an mac update this year?
how do we know if there is even an mac update this year
maybe there is a mac event next year or early on next year like the macbook air
Nothing yet, come on apple!
Nothing yet, come on apple! I need confirmation! (12:23pm EST)
no MB or MBP until 2009!
no invites will be sent to the media today; day is already half over. if you haven't noticed no spy pics or specs, which usually come from the popular apple rumor sites prior to an event, have even been posted lately!!
the new macbooks and macbook pros were postponed this summer, when apple sells tons of laptops to students. and because apple missed this oppurtunity we will not see the newly redesigned macbook/macbook pro's until January 2009 MacExpo event. so instead of waiting 7 days for a rumored event, you should really be counting the ~90 days or so until the MacWorld Expo!
Don't be so pessimistic
Apple usually don't let any information about new laptops leak out, unlike the case with new iPods. I feel there's a good change for new MBs & MBPs next tuesday. Just because the invitations is half a day late in your mind, doesn't mean they aren't gonna come.
KEEP YOUR HOPES UP GUYS!! xD
I've been waiting for new MBPs for nearly 2 months now, so I really hope they update soon. But I'm not gonna go with a non-Mac just because the updates are coming in 3 months.
Ever hear of Christmas?
While it is not apparent when invites will be sent, I would not be too quick to dismiss rumors about laptop updates during this time of the year. Why would they want to release a new model after Christmas season? It seams more rational to release a new product now so it can be on the shelves for the Christmas selling season.
Top from the bottom.
Top from the bottom.
omg...
OK,
i ll oficially buy a laptop by Asus if there are no macbooks coming out next tuesday.. These macbooks are very weak comparing to PC laptops I can get for the price and altough I am an apple person (ibook, ipod, iphone), i will not buy "old" macbook, no matter what... :) I ve been waiting for ocotber 14th for more than month, I really need a new laptop, I ll not wait another 90 days...
Agree, Apple-Netbook @
Agree, Apple-Netbook @ <£500 or i buy an Asus etc
no mbp next week, no mbp for the next three years
I've also been waiting for the new macbook pros since I have to buy a new laptop. If they're not coming these days I'll buy a new sony vaio now... vista sucks but I don't want the old mbp
Come On Apple
It's really high time we get an updated Macbook and MBP. I have been waiting for a month now and comparing the specs to other laptops, Macs are actually weak.
New vs old
So I just wanted to chime in...
I don't get some people's impatience. You will buy a PC if the MacBooks aren't updated next Tuesday? Aren't you forgetting the fact that the current MacBooks are better than anything else out there... and I can attest. About 4 months ago I picked up a ThinkPad despite having had a PowerBook Titanium for 6 years prior (that's right, 6 years, and it still works fine - running 10.4), I broke down and went to PCs because right now, being a student, and up to my ears in debt, I thought that saving a couple hundred dollars was worth it...
...Boy was I wrong.
I think this machine (ThinkPad Z61, 14.1") is solid & will probably stand the test of time. But the battery life is horrific, and I get weird hardware-related USB errors on a regular basis. And XP is, well, XP, not exactly a stimulating user experience.
So if I could trade my ThinkPad for an even older MacBook, I'd do it in a heartbeat. It's totally worth it. Even the old ones. They'll stand the test of time. That's been my experience with every piece of Apple hardware.
And even if you did go out any buy that cheaper PC... two weeks later, there is gonna be an even cheaper one... there's no end in sight. Just get the best machine for your buck. Not the cheapest. The least expensive always end up costing you something in the end, usually that's time, and for me, time is the most valuable thing on earth.

cool uh... you have anything
cool uh... you have anything IMPORTANT to say?

lolz.... imba irl
you're comparing a thinkpad as if they are made out of gold, to squeeze out a cleveland steamer onto...
Uh huh...
I think I'm starting to understand those who say they'll buy a pc instead of an "old" mbp... A pc may be worse, but it's newer... You would never show a year-old pc to people, so if it's an image thing, much better a new, shiny, buggy-on-the-inside but pretty-on-the-outside sony or hp. I'll take the wait, even though this will be my first mac, and I'm on a buggy loaner dell from a few years ago. I would much rather have an "old" macbook to almost any pc on the market. Hopefully it's just a webcast or silent release on the 14th... as for macsoda, I think him saying we should expect invites was perfectly acceptable. I was already expecting to see invites today a month ago. It's always a week before. I think I'll check macrumors and see what types of events they've updated the macbooks at historically. Until then, patience everyone, we'll all get our chance.
Well said ed
In reply to eds comment about people going out and buying a new pc if a new mb or mbp isn't released...i am in complete agreement.
You all sound like spoilt kids. you buy what is good at the time and if you keep waiting for the new thing then you are going to be waiting forever.
As for image. I would rather be seen with an old mac over a new pc any day
No Way
I for one, will not wait forever for a new MBP. If I don't hear any updates by Oct. 14, I'm gonna buy myself a Voodoo Envy. I, unlike some, have work to do, and can't wait months on end for a laptop. I've already waited too long, and it's starting to affect my productivity.
moron.
You are a complete moron. You could have already bought a Mac Laptop by now and been very satisfied or an equivalent notebook of another make and been "working" this whole time, making money off that increased productivity to buy you another laptop in the near future.
To say Apple is keeping you from being productive cause you can't buy a rumored laptop is just stupidity on your part. If you want to be productive and you need a new laptop you would have already bought one if you were smart. But by your comment, "smarts" is something you are in desperate demand of.
Also, if you are going to get one of those "pee-dabber" VooDoo Envys why don't you buy a MacBook Air, it's the same exact thing. Then you would have the much "newer" and "thinner" MacBook.
Use that lump of blubber between your ears and start thinking with it.
im not waiting another 3 months
i totally agree with "no way" ... i cannot afford to wait another 3 months for mac world. i am a working dj and also work in the financial industry. my old PC's motherboard died on me and i thought i would take this opportunity to join the apple community as many of my friends have macbooks and are totally in love with them. i have always owned pc's and even though i haven't had a horrible experience with them ... my time with them has been very glitchy. i use my laptop to manage my entire music collections and to edit create and mix my music. in casually using my friends macs i have found them to be many times more reliable. i have been waiting and waiting for the new macs to arrive. I desperately need my laptop. If no macs on the 14th i will be forced to keep my on again off again love hate relationship with pc ...
come on Steve !!! im waiting ... give me better macs and lower prices !!! i need my brick
Well to all you apple sell outs....
Dexter uses mac... doesn't that mean anything anymore..
/me throws a brick to
/me throws a brick to dj*icon....
postponed
I've postponed the buy of a brand new macbook pro until the 14th... my old brick will not work 3 more months...
please, please announce them on the 14th :)
Apple NEVER did a laptop-ONLY
Apple NEVER did a laptop-ONLY oriented event, not even when they switched to Intel. Not even when they released the iBook, as it was WWDC 1999. Why would they do such event now? I bet the new MB/P will be released on the Oct 14th nonetheless.
BREAKING NEWS!
I 100% agree with J. Goodes response... everyone needs to look at his comment again!
