Mac mini is the most energy efficient desktop PC, new data claims
Apple’s Mac mini is perhaps the most energy-efficient computer available from any PC manufacturer, new energy efficiency data has confirmed - meaning you can run one far more cheaply than many other computers. They even start inexpensively - $550 from Amazon, a cheaper deal even than that offered by Apple in its Black Friday sale.
UK based firm sust-it today announced its energy efficiency roundup, citing Apple as among the most energy efficient computers.
Apple’s Mac mini has shot to the top of sust-it energy efficiency charts for computers.
The company observes: “There’s a staggering difference between the energy consumption of computers in the marketplace; you could save nearly £150 per year on electricity in choosing the most efficient models. We’ve been highlighting these savings through our unique ranking system and it’s great news that Apple has responded to the environmental issues, I hope other manufacturers will follow their lead.”
The energy consumption site ranks over 5,000 electrical products by their energy efficiency, meaning consumers can identify which machines are the most energy-efficient, and also get to figure out which computers are the cheapest to run.
Beyond the Mac, the service also lists white goods and A/V kit, from televisions to freezers.

That's all quite fine, but then, for its price including the yearly energy costs, you could have a far more powerful and flexible system as long as you don't need that form factor.
(I am a Mac owner. I am not dissing the platform here)
Who really gives a shit about the amount of power used? Show me any data where buyers look at the amount of power used. The only people that care about that crap are people either pushing an agenda or people looking for something to write about.
Why not do a study on why Apple continues to maintain a high price point.
Um, cuz some people *do* give a shit? Going green is a big movement; and people who care about cooling and power requirements (ever have to spec out shit for a data center?) *need* to know about stuff like this. The fact that you feel that Apple has a high price point belies the fact that you're just a hater. Go buy a crappy dell netbook and you'll be happy. Is there a reason you comment here other than to bash shit? Thought not.
If people really cared about their "carbon foot print" they would live in huts, pick berries and nuts, dry fish flesh under the noon day sun, walk instead of drive, and would certainly not own a electrically operated device. The tree hugger types of whom you speak only want to feel better about themselves by smugly insinuating they they are better citizens of the plant than anyone else only because they purport to be the "least environmental offenders" of modern life.
Be my guest and live life as an aborigine. Just don't let me catch you squandering your self righteousness dollars, francs, pounds, or yens on the accouterments of modernity. AGW is a myth as much as living an authentic primitive life style as a member of Western civilization. The vast majority of tree huggers will not sacrifice modern conveniences for the rigors of traditional indigenous and subsistence lifestyle. They are true hypocrites or self-deluded fools.
Who says you have to go live aboriginal to care about what happens to the environment? Collectively, small changes, like caring about how much power your computer uses, how much gas your vehicle consumes, how much power goes to heat/cool your house, etc can all add up to something big. It's not enough, but to sit on our duffs and call it just a myth is to be ignorant to the fact we're living with a global environmental debt (that is, we consume more natural capital than our world can generate each year.) I'm quite certain that given what we know, there's a way to balance the environmental budget while keeping some of the technological advances we've come to know and love. The fact you believe AGW (Anthropogenic -- human caused -- Global Warming) is a myth demonstrates you've clearly been drinking the capitalist/corporatist kool aid for far too long. The collective body of scientific evidence indicates there IS a trend, and it IS human in nature. Carbon isn't the only greenhouse gas. In fact, it's not even the most effective greenhouse gas. Where the world faces serious problem, however, is when all that carbon and all our other GHG emissions heats up the earth to the point that ice caps melt and water vapor is more present in the atmosphere, we'll have passed a tipping point, and the world's climate will change even more rapidly. Put a lid on a pot of boiling water and you'll get a sense of what I'm talking about. It's why Venus is hotter than Mercury, even though Mercury is closer to the sun.
What a bunch bull this is. Let Apple add a mandatory $100 fee to every Mini it sells to go toward some "green" scam and lets see how many less computers they sell.
You ask 100 buyers if they care more about price or power usage and 99.9 (100 if they are all honest) will only care about price.
Apple is going to use more power in its new data farm in North Carolina then every Mac Mini combined ever used. Yet, they are still building away.
WHY not do a study on WHY ppl already think of price over environment.. its a very selfish act u know...
Institutions with hundreds of computers care.
I like this mini mac !

DO something for the environment...
If everyone would be thinking like..
(becoz of paying high price for a product which could actually do its part to save the environment, we will juz abolish it)
something like 2012 will be a reality if everyone would be like tat...
Think about replacing a low load (or out of date) server with one. An old G5 xserve use a 100w more at idle (~$80/yr). If it's in a server room/office space the 100w is an additional cooling cost. It's possible it'd pay for itself quickly if you had to expand out due to lack of space (then again those places would've replaced all the old stuff and virtualized low load servers).
The next Mac I will buy will be a Mac Mini (to replace this older Macbook Pro). I am NOT buying a Mac Mini computer because I think it is more energy efficient (I wholeheartedly disagree with the whole climate change argument, as I think it is more about hysteria and global financial racketeering, and suggesting that countries like China and India can't enjoy empires like Europe and America have been enjoying, (phew- catch a breath!) rather than plain scientific sense). I don't give a sausage about global energy efficiency. No, I am buying a Mac Mini next because they are great computers, pure and simple! It's server sister is also a bargain, and should be seriously considered by all small businesses, over these awful Windows based things.
Though I understand what you're saying on the face of things about a global conspiracy, let me put those fears to bed and instill a new set of fears. It's not that the Indian or Chinese standard of living increasing is a problem. It's that the European and North American standard of living is a problem. Estimates indicate that if everyone on the planet (assuming that population had stopped growing at the 6 billion mark), we'd need about 5 planet earths to keep up with the rate of consumption in first world nations. Empires must fall, rather than global standard of living must increase. This is a fact that no one in the first world wants to admit. As Ghandi said, "The world supplies enough for everyone's need, but not enough for some people's greed." Capitalism as a model is failing our planet, and no one is ready to step up to the plate and challenge the status quo. I'm not suggesting Communism as a model; I'm not even suggesting what the model SHOULD be. I'm merely suggesting that something has got to give, and that change is merely inevitable, whether disaster imposed or carefully planned. We're still in the stages where we can plan... but I fear apathy and poor judgement will cost billions of lives in the process, mostly in already exploited, impoverished regions.
Estimates indicate that if everyone on the planet lived like Americans (assuming that population had stopped growing at the 6 billion mark), we'd need about 5 planet earths to keep up with the rate of consumption in first world nations.
I bought a mini earlier this year instead of an iMac, strictly because of its efficiency.
It is the most energy efficient but with those specs how effective is it overall? It is a great desktop for the average user who just does email and that whole deal but don't know if it is a great buy for someone who does anything else on a PC.
A Mac mini makes a good entertainment server.
A Mac mini in sleep mode uses less electricity than a night light.
