Apple's cut-price Mac plan marks marketshare explosion - analyst
Expect faster, cheaper and better Macs as Apple uses price to maintain its growth spike, the analysts at Needham & Co. said, revealing slightly reduced estimates on the company stock,.
Analyst Charles Wolf notes Apple easily beat third quarter consensus estimates, reporting earnings per share of $1.19 on revenues of $7.46 billion, observing, "But the stock was crushed after the release by gross margin guidance that was materially lower than the historic numbers both for the fourth quarter and fiscal 2009. Our take is that Apple wants to continue the Mac's momentum and will use pricing to do so."
The purported plan follows a stupendously strong Mac sales quarter, Apple reached 2.5 million unit sales, up almost three times the market growth rate.
Apple's proposed fourth quarter margins sent some investors into a tizzy. Apple’s gross margin was 34.8% in the third quarter. But Apple expects it to fall to 31.5% in the fourth quarter and to average around 30% in fiscal 2009. "This guidance sent a shockwave through the investor community," Wolf notes.
"Our take is that Apple appears willing to accept a lower gross margin in exchange for continued Mac market share gains and faster revenue growth," he advised. "The guidance for 2009 suggests that Apple may reduce the prices of its high volume iMac and MacBook lines to continue their surge."
"We’ve raise our 2009 Mac shipment forecast from 12.9 to 14.2 million units. We’ve cut our 2009 earnings per share estimate from $6.95 to $5.95 solely because of
the expectation of a lower gross margin than we previously anticipated. We continue with our strong buy rating. We are maintaining our $240 price target for now," the analyst said.

No doubt this guidance is another nail in the coffin for independent Apple only retail stores, assuming reseller margins will get squeezed again.
i hope it's a nail in the coffin of the macbook pro. i'm sick of listening to snobbish "power users" whinge about their need for an update.
the macbookpro is THE highend laptop for professionals working in creative industries. NO WAY are they going to "bury" it...
You say snobbish, I say professionals who can't get their work done with a macbook or macbook air. Kill the MBP, and I'll have to shop for some other kind of computer. I won't WANT to, I'll HAVE to.
Granted there are some people who use the MBP who don't really need it. You can probably call them snobbish, but I'd call 'em poseurs. Not to their face, of course, I might want to borrow some of their extra money some day, since they don't know what else to do with it.
I agree... Anyone who does film editing has only one choice when it comes to portables - the MacBook Pro. Guess that makes me a snob?
You and me both. In fact I need to buy an MBP for a mobile editing project within the next few weeks, so this news is just killing me.
Finally moving up from the desktop editing system as well. It's taken me a few years to believe that a mobile can handle video as well as a desktop, so I'm doubly snobbish. I'd be a MacPro snob if I wasn't still sporting a PowerMac. (I remember being called a Powermac snob, but I haven't heard that for a while) Hopefully I can be more snobbish still and hold out for the MBP update. But honestly, I'll need to see the update within three weeks or I have to buy whatever MBP I can get.
They'll keep a healthy profit margin. Apple doesn't cut prices that much, it updates a line, be it MacBook Pros, or MacBooks.
Re. "The purported plan follows a stupendously strong Mac sales quarter, Apple reached 2.5 million unit sales, up 1.5% year-over-year, almost three times the market growth rate. "
Yahoo is reporting from AP that "Apple shipped more Macs in its fiscal third quarter than ever before — 2.5 million, up 41 percent from a year ago, with desktop shipments growing faster than laptops."
You say an increase of 1.5% and AP says 41%. That WAY too big a difference! I wonder who's right.
If you need a portable editing solution and the current MBP WILL do the job, I say go for it. It is the nature of the computer industry that there will always be a machine that is newer, faster and have a better price/performance ratio. If you keep listening to rumors or even facts, you'll most likely wait forever.
As for Apple killing off the MBP concept, I think the chances of that are infinitesimally small. The MacBook Pro is the first portable that I have felt comfortable using to replace a desktop machine. I migrated all of my work to the MBP and have never regretted it. I can't see Apple killing a cash cow (even if the cash might be a little less).
Looking forward to aluminum MacBooks.
Don't you idiots get it? People are BUYING MACS....A WHOLE LOT OF EM!
NO, they are not going to "bury" anything. Geezus read the freakin article again. They are willing to accept lower margins because they want more market share. They are going to come out soon with newer updated models of everything at lower costs. Apple is on the Attack!!
you are all noobs!
