Microsoft's Mac BU plans big expansionTue, 06/24/2008 - 06:58 — Andy Space
A note on the Mac Mojo blog on the Mac BU site says: "We are hard at work planning for products beyond Office 2008, and we are growing our team to help turn our vision into reality. We offer the feel of a small company with a strong team culture of innovation, creativity, and creating great user experiences." Microsoft is hiring for multiple roles (Program Managers, Developers, Testers, User Experience, and Marketing) based in Redmond and in Silicon Valley. "We offer an outstanding opportunity to build great software experiences for Mac customers, and to have a significant impact on the way millions of Mac users work around the world." While it may not always be so obvious when using Microsoft's productivity software, the Mac BU describes themselves as, "the brightest, coolest, and most interesting business unit at Microsoft – if we do say so ourselves." Formed on January 7, 1997 the Mac BU is one of the largest developers of Macintosh software outside of Apple, currently employing more than 180 people and having an estimated yearly revenue of $350 million.

what do those 180 people do
what do those 180 people do ?
does one write the software, and the rest find ways to introduce bugs ?
Windows mobile for iPhone? So
Windows mobile for iPhone? So when you upgrade to IE8, it automagically replaces the OS on your iPhone.

oh gawd. i puked in my mouth....
Entourage? I Rest My Case
"Mac BU describes themselves as 'the brightest, coolest, and most interesting business unit at Microsoft...'"
Hmmmm
1. Entourage (I'm no Outlook - good by Exchange)
2. Office 2008 - No VBA
3. Office 2008 - no automatic document extensions - tsk tsk for email sharing
What the hell do they do with
What the hell do they do with their time?
It takes them years to release a piece of software that actually has less features than the one before.
with 180 employees too... 90%
with 180 employees too... 90% are janitors and cafeteria people?
What a way to ruin a good platform
Sorry I can't say I like the idea of MicroSoft writing software for the MAC. The main reason I use a MAC is to get away from crappy Windoze software. Haven't they screwed up their own platform well enough? Why bother MAC? Entourage...well to be nice stinks, I can't even use MS office on the MAC...it's absolutely bad at best (at least in my experience). I think MS should have their hands full enough trying to fix their own bloatware.
Wise up
Seems MS is thinking about actually writing good applications on the Mac, which always seemed like an also-ran for these many years.
Exchange owns the market with Outlook (though some would argue Lotus Notes) but in order to keep it, they will have to do better than Entourage, especially if the iPhone has a better client than the desktop.
Go MS! Spend some money and make products you know you can!
i can't tell if this is super
i can't tell if this is super sarcastic or not..
Believe it or else
Most of the employees in MacBU don`t have Macs to use, they work on Windoze & it surely shows. As I was told by someone there, only the developers and testers have Macs.
Big surprise huh ?
IE for Mac
They are probably reporting IE to the Mac, Lord knows we all miss IE5 on OS X.
Just wish they would make Entourage support syncing the memopad and tasks with Exchange.
MS Project for the Mac would be nice, as would a decent Visio (they would need to revamp the current Visio to make it decent)
Office 2008 - JunkSoft
Maybe a few hundred more developers will produce software on the Mac (Word) that can save documents which can be read under Windows (Word); just imagine!
Add a few hundred more and maybe, just maybe we will get back useful macro support. Cross platform software should work the same (including feature parity) on all supported platforms. What good are Applescript macros under Windows? Why can't I use my co-worker's (Windows) documents with VBA macros on my Mac without running Fusion?
Office 2008 is a neutered, buggy, version of Office 2004 with a new paint job. I would prefer functionality and stability over paint.
