What will the Macintosh of the future look like?

The Mac is almost 25 years old. This is really remarkable in today's technology/branding landscape. This one product has held on for so long while so many others have come and gone. What will a Macintosh look like in another 25 years? If we look purely at specs and compare the original Mac 128K with today's base model 24" inch iMac (we feel that the iMac line is closest to the original idea) we get a pretty crazy machine - below:

  1984 2009 2034
Screen 9 inch B&W 24 inch color 64 inch (3D?)
RAM 128K 2GB  32TB
Disk Storage 400K Floppy 250GB Hard Drive 64PB (SSD?)
Processor Speed 8MHz 2.4GHz 720GHz
Weight 16lbs 25 lbs 36 lbs
Networking Appletalk 230Kb/s Ethernet 1Gb 4Tb/s (Wireless?)
Power Consumption 60 W or 205.2 BTU 120 W 240 W

Of course a lot of this would never happen.   How do you see the Mac of 2034?

I don't think we would have a dedicated screen in 25 years - they may continue to merge it with our TV. I would say between 46" - 100+"

As far as RAM is concerned, it will be outdated or reached a functional limit. Maybe a SOC with 24GB of cache. As for Processor speed - we would probably have 16 - 32 cores but not much more than 8Ghz each. Then we get to disk storage - yeah, most likely SSD or some sort of biological based storage (base16+ insetad of base 2). In the PB range, definately but I don't think a standard user machine would have that high of a capacity. Possibly at most 1 or 2 PB's at most.

The weight - will be drasticly different. Most likely 10lbs at most. Unfortunately for networking - We are in the US and our home broadband sucks and will continue to suck. Probably in 25 years we'll be stuck at 10Gb/s.

Power consumtion would be less - like 25 W.

What could you possibly do

2739

What could you possibly do with a 100" screen?

I see...

2331

... a holographic screen WITH MULTITOUCH that can be expanded to whatever size is desired, 4 TB RAM, 4 PB SSD, 16 6 GHz cores, 6 lbs (due to the fact that it will have a holographic screen), 500 GB/sec ethernet, and maybe a 10W power draw.

...and one USB 5.0 port :P

No mockup?

"RAM" on CPU

3035

I agree with MadMike about the large CPU cache. Someone at Intel said the CPU sucks everything in. I think that will include RAM someday. There may be two tiers of RAM, some on chip and some "traditional" RAM as a stopgap. As a result, the computer would be less modular, but I think that's what Jobs intended from the start.

it will be an iphone / ipod

2631

it will be an iphone / ipod touch that can hook up to a display and run normal osx, and it will be a LOT sooner than 2034

Data would be transmitted to our [grandchildren's] brain-implanted receptor that create visual/audio/smell/taste/tactil/warm/pain (when shot in a video game)... etc., etc....

It would be the holodeck,

It would be the holodeck, like on the Enterprise!

Screen

3135

Some kind of projection, be it holographic, 3D or 2D, I don't know.

But because it's a projection, the physical form factor of the computer itself will be a lot smaller than the current iMacs. If you project keyboard or tracking areas too - or if it's keyboardless and senses "touches" to the projected screen - even smaller.

don't forget electricity is

3129

don't forget electricity is going wireless, so no need for cable mess

I think it will not have a

3529

I think it will not have a lot over 3 or 4Ghz per Core (because of power consumption and heat efficiency - unless mankind finds a way to produce and reduce energy from/to nothing), but it will have a Processor that will have manymanymany Cores. Display? It will more likely be something like a intelligent eyetracking device for a direct beam to the eye ... no need for screensizes if your whole viewing space is used for display. The same device coult be used for finger tracking, a Kind of mega-webcam ;)

It will only have one unified Cable for everything (Power, Internet Access, Other possible Devices) that will act as directed antenna for nearby stuff like Printers or whatever, since someone finally found out that all those tentacle wearing mutations are results of WLAN.

Intel had a road map that

Intel had a road map that said that by 2015 they would be getting close to 1,000,000 cores on a chip.

MadMike is off alittle bit. ;)

25 years??? thats a long time in tech

2831

not likely to be discrete computer, but rather a distributed grid around the house/street/neighbourhood/world (internet on steroids??). multi-core optical or quantum processors, removable holographic crystals (think babylon 5) for user data, bio or holographic storage in place of hard drives. variety of user inputs - contact and non-contact multi touch, head/eye tracking. each house/office/pub/etc will have many displays, each capable of displaying anything and everything (status of house, menus, photos, bar bills, weather, television, radio, applications, files).

cool...

2433

that idea seems more plausible in the 25 year range...
pretty much goes step by step in the rapid growth of the multipurpose uses of the internet...

... and ill have my flying car, dammit!!!

Hell yeah, the future NEEDS

Hell yeah, the future NEEDS flying cars! Otherwise how do we know it the future and not the present dragging on for too long?

one chip to rule them all

2835

i think you will have a chip inside the brain that can  control all the stuff that they comented above(3d, holografic, radio, aplications, etc)
power: wireless power.
i think that the multicore will be dead in that time.
i can hope to see a quantum computer.

I agree... they can only make

3335

I agree... they can only make transistors so small.... soon they will have quantum computers more powerful than today's conventional systems

We won't be here to find out

2930

We won't be here to find out with the way things are going...

duh

3031

My God half of you commenters can't even spell or write English and here you are with your 'opinions'. I think a brain upgrade in the next 25 years might be a good idea.

Maybe in 25 years, the US

2431

Maybe in 25 years, the US will catch up to the rest of the world and finally adopt metric measurement. Screens seem larger in centimetres and portables seem lighter in kilograms.

iMac of 2034...

3037

iPhone will be the processor.

There will be a flip out Multi-Touch electronic paper (ePaper) extension pad/display from your iPhone.  The pad will expand to standard keyboard size if needed, but most applications will only require a small keypad footprint.  Naturally, the pad will also double as the main display.

Internet will be 100% wireless (VoIP will have replaced the current cell phone technologies worldwide).

No USB or Firewire as Bluetooth will have advanced to replace all need for wires to/from periphials.

Secondary and tertiary displays will of course be wireless and selectable (local TV, projector, optical implant, etc...

It will have a standard 2.0 Giga-Pixel camera (and everyone will still complain about its resolution!!!)

It will be able to control all our your electronic devices at home, car and work.
