So, it was bound to happen at some time. Linux is now booting on the iPhone. It still has a long way to go in the "features" department but tinkerers will no doubt be interested in playing with the iPhone and its new capabilities. Don't expect a mainstream version any time soon...head to OpenMoko if that is your thing.
The iPhone would be great if you could boot up in either the iPhone OS, or Google's Android....Or any other OS. It would be just like my Mac, when I start up in Windows. Perhaps someone could make an application like VMWare or Parallels on the iPhone. That would be great
The point is? Why is it that any new device that comes out, there is some linux nerd putting linux on it like it's some holy grail of this or that. We GOT IT. Linux will pretty much run on a cows teet if you install it right.
I love the part where he says "there is no touch screen functionality yet". Lol. Ok. So you have a screen showing an echo of what you are doing locally and you can do nothing else with it. Neato!
Look mah, I can run LINUX on my iphone. Pointless.. again.
So we take one of the easiest and most intuitive to use portable computers and want to put one of the most difficult to configure and use operating systems ever on it. Sounds like a case of yeah we can, but should we!
I think its funny to see Linux on the iPhone. But for me it is disapointing, that the software don't use the special function of the iPhone. Perhabs it will work in future. But now the best Software for the iPhone is original iPhone OS.
So you put Unix on a Unix box. How about just porting Getty (make sure it's owned by root), Vi and Bourne or Korn Shell to the iPhone to make all of the Unix/Linux geeks (like me) happy... That would be an accomplishment...

Lame....
Linux is a waste of time, as far as I'm concerned... Interesting accomplishment though.

Unix VS Unix
How to exchange the robust BSD's UNIX with coherent GUI by anarchy, in one step...

I have to say, those who haven't should check out the comments on Engadget. They actually make some pretty good points for once.
Linux is good but Apple is better

sudo dial -voice -N
sudo dial -voice -N 00317027423 -conn 3G -a -x > /dev/audio0
It'll be a huge success! Much easier than pressing buttons.
Good work and nice job, but ...
Good work and nice job, but I don't see the big deal.
iPhone OS = XNU = Mach Kernel (from NeXT) + BSD4.3 = Unix.
Linux = GNU/Lunix = Free and Open Source Unix.

Linux is the kernel. the iPhone is not remotely based on Linux. Let the Linux enthusiasts have their way.
