Apple tablet - two flavours, delayed till late 2010 - Digitimes

We’re unhappy to report the latest Apple tablet rumour, which claims the as-yet unannounced but already industry-changing device won’t now ship until later next year.

“Apple reportedly plans to postpone the launch of its tablet PC from an original March launch schedule to the second half of 2010, as the vendor has decided to switch some components and plans to launch a model using a 9.7-inch OLED panel from LG Display, according to sources from component makers,” reports Digitimes.

Seems that everybody and their brother’s involved in making the new device: Foxconn/Hon Hai; Quanta and Pegatron technology are all thought to be manufacturing partners for the two models of tablet Apple’s got planned.

One tablet will have a 10.6-inch TFT LCD panel while the other will have a 9.7-inch OLED panel, the report claims. LG Display currently makes OLED panels and has an existing $500 million panel purchasing contract with Apple.

Apple's 9.7-inch OLED tablet PC is expected to have a cost of about $1,500-1,700, the report explains, adding that OLED panels are pretty expensive and suggesting prices should only fall in time.

“The sources estimate that Apple's tablet PC cost will drop to around US$1,200-1,500 by the second half of 2010 with the retail price reaching about US$2,000. The price could be more flexible if bundled with telecom providers' 3G services. Meanwhile, the 10.6-inch LCD panel-based Apple tablet PC is expected to priced in the US$800-1,000 range.”

Tiny Screen + Huge Price = FAIL

so a 10.6" iPad for $900 and a (slightly smaller!) 9.7" iPad for $1350

really? doesn't sound like a very coherent range to me.

that's why all these rumors are busted... what the hell are they talking about!?!

You know, it's odd that you guys are reporting this story because I swear just the other day I had a feeling they were going to delay this thing.  Obviously I didn't actually "know" - it just seems like they'd be rushing things for a March launch.  Maybe the hardware is ready (maybe not), but I bet they're trying to rally all the support they can from movie studios, newspaper and magazine companies, etc...  There really could be nothing worse than introducing this thing and having it fall flat early because not everything was prepared.  Nonetheless, sucks that we have to wait even longer.

Can you say, "AppleTV"?

At this point, with all of the hype, this thing is probably going to fail.  We're expecting so much from it that it had better be able to cure cancer while at the same time, it should be able to provide power to our homes and cars.

Nobody knows what it actually is, but thanks to Apple's most-excellent publicity (or should I say, lack of it) we all want one.

This thing has been 6 months away for yearrrrrs. We were getting nearer the point the rumor people would have to put up or shut up. So now it's being "postponed". Again.

World without end.

with any other company, they'd call it vaporware.

this just doesn't make any sense. why on earth would apple start with two different types of displays? this is so un-apple. and the price range is just ridiculous. it's gonna be a simple, affordable, yet effective device. if you exchange apple for microsoft, this rumour could be true. but not with steve jobs being alive.

actually nothing is being "postponed" because nothing has been anounced (yet). actually i think it is a good idea to push it back to "end" of 2010, because i won't have the money for a new piece of equipment until then :)

Both the Apple tablets are really good. But the the price range is just ridiculous. The price of the Phone should be effective and affordable.

Remember what the real price of the iPhone is without subsidies. The subsidies seem to be giving people unrealistic expectations about what this kind of stuff costs.

You can't tell me that, this far into development, it suddenly occurs to Apple that for their product to be relevant next year, it needs an OLED screen.

No kidding. Name one person who couldn't have already guessed that OLED was in the works, and more than that, is the ticket to the "high quality" screen we've all heard about. This wasn't just decided last week. This isn't news.

Honestly I couldn't wait any longer and just bought myself a netbook with Windows 7. I love Apple, the iPhone, and the idea of the tablet, but it took too long to get here. Sorry Apple, but you really missed the wave of interest.

Well, evidently Apple is pushing for the next generation of the OLED.  As we've all seen with the Zune, OLED does not necessarily mean "better".  The current crop of OLEDs have numerous limitations that make them completely unsuitable for many applications and add substantially to the price tag.

The best displays out there, by far, are still non-organics.

It must be some new OLED technology else any eBook applications will epic fail. Somehow, I don't think Apple will be so stupid. I sense cutting edge new display tech. Anyway, the 4G iPhone will probably suffice as a tablet - higher res display (like Moto DROID, N900 etc), better battery life (please!), better phone reception (please!), 720P video recording (min) and a 5MP (min) camera with Xenon flash. Thanks Steve! Hugs.

Way way to expensive to be competive!

Two very similar screen sizes - that doesn't make any sense. OLED technology is already available - so this source is not very reliable for me.

Sorry, but I just don't agree with the naysayers here.

It doesn't matter when Apple iPad arrives because, whenever it does, it will be a game-changing gotta have gadget. I am not an Apple Fanboy, but this is what Cupertino has consistently done with all of its recently launched products: iPod, iPhone, unibody MacBooks, and even the recent Magic Mouse.

Sure, the iPad will be a great way to watch movies, play music and surf the web; I imagine that it may even have a phone built into it. But whatever it offers, it will need a killer application to send it to the stratospheric heights of desire. One novel app could be video calling, but I think the real revolution will be in the method of input.

Titbits of information coming out suggest that Apple is working hard to perfect touch screen gestures and on-screen buttons that speed the input of data. To do this, Apple's engineers are fundamentally rethinking how people use computers and the hierarchy of commands they need to perform basic functions quickly and reliably. Now that SJ has re-engaged, I am sure that he his extraordinary demands for practical, intuitive functionality have caused a fair number of 'back to the drawing board' redevelopments of certain components - mostly software, I reckon.

We didn't need TVs before they were invented. Nor mobile phones. Now that we have them, they're indispensable. The same will be true for the iPad. So keep the faith, when it comes, it'll knock our socks off.

(Re-reading this, maybe I am an Apple fanboy. But so what, great tech is great tech.)

Could this be a leak from Apple itself, through backdoor channels to keep people from holding off on their holiday purchases. (product freeze)?

9.7" OLEDs are still as rare as hens teeth. For even a modestly successful Apple product, they need bulk deliveries of components totalling in the millions, even just for year one.

There's absolutely no chance they are going to put a 9.7" display costing $1000 on its own into a consumer device.

I suspect these informants have gotten a sample order of displays for evaluation and gotten there knickers in a twist.

Apple must buy all sorts of component parts to see how well they work, whether they'd fit in whatever designs they are cooking up. This $1000 display could be for the 2011 or 2012 tablet, at which point the display costs $70.

At this point, I don't mind it anymore if Apple delays the tablet again.

Let them take their time and get it right.  I have a feeling that they are swapping out a component (display tech?) for the device that will take the thing over the top to where the competition will have no hope of matching it.

Apple WILL get the product just right!

There's no way Apple destroys the retail price of this just to put an OLED screen in. They haven't even gone OLED for the 3.5" iPhone displays which have dramatically less room for a battery, WHY would they go all-in for a 9.7" display? They'll go LCD LED-backlit just as they have for the MacBooks/MacBook Pros.

Expect OLED in the iPhone 4G, not the iTablet/Slate-whatever. This is a media-centric device sitting in their product line between an iPod touch and a full 13" MacBook, I think the rumors of $600-$900 are accurate, it's possible that it may push higher if the storage exceeds 128GB for flash-HD.

I think the 9.7" OLED screen rumour is bogus. OLED panels close to that size are really expensive right now. For an example, SONY's 11.6" OLED computer monitor currently retails for $3699!! OUCH!  I can't imagine Apple using that in their tablet. The only benefit of OLED is that is uses 30% less power and provides true-blacks. And I don't care whether or not the blacks are truly black when I'm just using a 9.7" device for casual purposes. So the cost-to-benefit is really high.

After dropping 2 grand on a new iMac I won't be able to afford the tablet for another year.

If the screens are very similar then it seems to me that one will have Mac OSX and one will have iPhone OS.

The retail price can be like that if the iPhone OS one is heavily subsidized. Another way of reducing the price is to allow limited ads on the OS ...

hahahahahahahaha!!!!
