Laptop hunters ad #5
This one makes us sleepy.
Guess they missed the $999 white MacBook which would have competed very well with the Dell.

She says about the Mac..."and this one is $2000 and that's before you add anything...." doh!!!
What annoys me is she was looking at a unibody MacBook when she said "this is $2000." No it's not! At most it's $1600, which was within her target.
Considering that she was looking at the 15" unibody, I would take another look at the price tag again.
Or Here
http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro
That said, she could have had the Macbook for $1600 + a RAM upgrade. After all, she wasn't paying it. I'd have made sure I used every dollar given. Dopey if you ask me.

Umm actually it's more like $2200 and that's before warranty. A homey of mine just got one... So I guess it really doesn't compare to the PC
stupid MS
What would you need to add to the MacBook Pro if you're a law student? She doesn't even need a MacBook Pro for the kind of work she'd be doing. That just shows the mentality of the typical Windows user - they buy a PC expecting it not to work out of the box and to need expensive upgrades/additions.
She could probably get away with iWork '09 $49, then there's the $350 warrenty. Other than that you're about right.
...this one is 2.000 $ and that's before you add anything.
But what do the mac has to start with, and what do the pc she end up with has of hardware.
And she wanted to spend up to 1.700$ and ended to spend 971,99
There is a lot of extra power/features you can get for that extra 700$ so what was it she realy wanted to get?
And how little do she know about computers when she have no idé what computers cost, if she can be so mutch off whit what she wantted to spend, and what she sped for what she needed.
Plus why did she not look at the MacBook, and not just the MacBook Pro
The ONLY thing I can think of is that she wanted a 15" screen. I watched this ad a few days ago and I can't remember what she ended up with in terms of screensize. (No, I can't view the ad here as work has disabled the video) For her purposes, the only reason to go with a Macbook Pro over a Macbook would be the screen size.
And that sweet unibody.
it's a Microsoft Ad!
I SERIOUSLY doubt there are "out takes" where the "customer" chose a Mac. It's a commerical! It doesn't have to make sense or be true!
But Elle Woods was a law student too and she had an Apple!
but anyway even not talking about macs...
MS is paying for as long as the price tag is below 1700, why would she get something so cheap ?
dumb
They get to keep any money they don't spend.
I've seen this from PC user, my sister in law, she wants a mac, but the iMac is too slow for her. She told me that she would only buy the Mac Pro or nothing, the funny thing is that other than paying the bills online she does nothing else on her crappy dual-core, vista not-aero compatible machine. A PPC Mac mini has more power than her crappy laptop yet she would only buy the Mac Pro. I try to explain to her that a 20-inch iMac would be enough for her, she wouldn't listen. Figures!
Anyone notice she's actually looking at the 13 inch macbook, and then gives the price for the pro? Check the speaker grills.
The Macbook Pro has speakers on the side but this is the Macbook they showed
Well, I guess critical thinking and an analytical mind are no longer prerequisites for law school. Good luck with your career but please don't complain that you cannot get clients because they don't like your hourly rate. Cheap is as cheap does.
Did ya notice they were standing next to their BMW at the end of the ad. Why would you spend so much for a BMW when you can get the same exact thing from a Kia. Oh the irony.
on another note, they are rich enough for a BMW but won't spend a dime for a decent computer
Mac User
"Once you go Mac, you'll never go back"
MacBook Pro (early 2008)
2.4ghz, 4g RAM, Leopard 10.5.6
LOL, yeah, I'm cheap and wouldn't want to own a BMW is because you have to pay a lot of money to continue owning one... Yearly Property taxes, $500 tires... $200 batteries...
On the other hand, the driving experience of the car is awesome, and anyone who says running down the interstate at certain speeds is unsafe has never driven anything but a crap car...
Mac Book Pro vs Piece of Craptop...
There with you. You will never have a good memorable moment with that Piece of Craptop, which is more like a boat than a BMW ;). Best days are the day you get it and day you get rid of it :).
Great eye on the car. Did not pay that much attention. But looking at it again, it looks like it's a convertible (first frames) and has a sport package (wheels), so it's not even a cheap BMW, it's one that starts around $50,000 and goes up. Hence why she needs a cheap laptop, so she can afford to go to law school in style ;).
If only the americans would build a nice diesel sports car and road beds that were worth a darn. But what do you expect from a country where the lipstick is worth more than what's behind it?
Good catch!
I like your analysis, but not sure where you get the BMW yearly tax from. Tires are the same for every car that has sport tires they wear. Batteries? If your buying a new battery every year for a car something is wrong with your car lol!
I own two BMW's and there is actually very good TCO, the first 4years 50k all maintenance except tires is included. And I mean everything, you need new wipers, covered, you need new brakes, covered, etc.
i bet he has a few hundred of them in the back!
The title of the youtube video is ...get a Dell XPS 13. Surely, then, any of the regular macbooks would have been preferable with her budget seeing as she obviously hadn't her heart set on a 15" screen. I think this one is an ad too far.
But...wha...WHY would you go into a computer store with a budget of $1699 (in someone else's money) and settle for a computer that only costs $999? I'm baffled.
Guys, these are paid actors. Frankly,it is MS's best advertising to date. They don't (and aren't) have to be truthful here. They just have to spread FUD (fear uncertainty death). There are a large portion of the population that will believe these ads.
MS can't compete on product so they push the price. There are a lot of people who buy only on price. However, the times have changed since the '90s. Take the iPod for instance: people paid more for less features because it gave them both much better usability and it was cool. PCs with a higher price point are a bit more difficult to sway but Apple's strategy has always been to go after the education market first, then the rest of the consumers, and business last. Why? because the students of today are the leaders of tomorrow. I was a Mac user when I was younger, was forced to conform to PC in my early business days, and now have been in a position in our enterprise company to change 50% of our PCs to Macs and all of our cells to iPhones.
These ads will appeal to those who want a bare bones, cheap, device and are distracted by shiny (not necessarily attractive) objects.
I am a network Administrator for a public school in Michigan, and I have to say that Apple has NOT been putting a focus on education first. They used to, but the climate of education has changed.
Apple is more focused on their consumer division than anything else. The order for their business now is consumer, business, and then education. I primarily state this because if your district doesn't have enough money to support a 1-1 initiative, then you're pretty much screwed for performance.
Apple's tools for managing multiple servers and labs environment are just too wonky. We're getting by, but 10.5 was a HUGE step backwards for schools.
When Apple gets it's poop in a group with enterprise product quality and stability, then they will be in a position to push in the education area again.
Until then, I just preach the cost factor. Ironically in the school environment Mac servers cost FAR LESS than a windows server.
