Look, everyone knows this thing is the best desktop computer money can buy. But that doens't mean we get sick of hearing about it. Ken Mingis at Computerworld got his review in today and had some very interesting observations:
- It's important to note that the 27-in. model is $100 less than the $1,799 24-in. iMac that preceded it...or the $1799 30-inch Cinema Display that only has 10% more pixels.
- It is so good, it could bring back the desktop [nah!] But with an absolutely stunning screen, a lot of under-the-hood performance improvements, the wireless keyboard and the new mouse, and flexibility that makes it fit in at work or at home, this new iMac could lead to a resurgence in desktop sales for Apple.
- The screen, which manages to crowd in 109 pixels per inch, is the biggest selling point[Agree!]
- [BluRay is biggest omission.] According to Apple, it's possible to connect up an external Blu-Ray player -- but an adapter will be needed to convert the HDMI signal coming from the player to the MiniDisplay Port on the iMac. And a scaler would be needed because of the screen's high resolution. Apple doesn't sell those, though, so it'll be up to another company to come up with a solution.
- [Re: Magic Mouse] I'm less enamored of the two-finger swipes, because you have to hold the mouse in place with your thumb and ring fingers while swiping with your index and middle fingers.
- The body of the iMac is now made entirely of aluminum. The flat black plastic used on the back in earlier models is gone, allowing Apple to use its unibody design process to carve the chassis out of a solid block of aluminum.

- "Does this thing belong in the office or living room?'
Great question. Maybe it is best to get two.

good review
good Review!
which twitterclient is that? (on the right Side)
thank you.
lovely...
lovely...
10% more, you mean
The 30" display is 2560x1600, so it has *more*, not fewer, pixels than the 2560x1440 iMac. But yeah, not by much.
yes, that's 10%. Just like
yes, that's 10%. Just like the article (now) says.
with a matte screen...
i would buy one tomorrow if they had a matte screen option. technically its easy: the display itself is matte, the glass can be exchanged by a (metal-)frame - but: why the heck aren't they providing this option? polls show that at least 50% of the user want matte screens..
Actually, the display is
Actually, the display is glossy. Yup, glossy on glossy. Eww.
Y'know, those of us who are
Y'know, those of us who are really good looking don't mind the glossy screens ;-)
Seriously, though.... Apple execs haven't wanted to say anything, but there's been a growing problem of SUMS (Sudden Unintended Medusa Syndrome) among computer users. It started years ago in the Greek isles, but is finally beginning to spread. In order to combat this very troubling epidemic, all *responsible* computer manufacturers have been trying to devise safeguards. Instead of complaining, you should go out RIGHT THIS MINUTE and buy as many mirrors as possible. Go. Buy. Keep buying. If you see any lifelike statues along the way, you're too late.
Seriously?
More "omg i want matte!" blah blah whining?
The iMac body is not carved
The iMac body is not carved out of a single block of aluminum, nor does it need to be like a notebook does. It's a single piece stamping, like it was previously, but that just now includes the back. If they were to make it unibody style, it would cost quite a bit more.
yea sorry, more omg more
yea sorry, more omg more matte whining
The whining can definitely
The whining can definitely get annoying but I too wonder why it is not at least made an option. I guess they just really like the glass.
Matt screen protector like on the iPhone
So surely someone is selling/will sell a huge screen protector sticker like you can get for the iPhone that makes it matt??
I will reserve judgement on
I will reserve judgement on the wonderfulness of the new quad-core iMacs after reading and digesting the reviews of more than one independent and objective person. I consider the ebulliant and sycophantic praise of biased and insecure fanbois the worst possible form of unintelligent communication.
Wow that iMac screen is big!
Wow that iMac screen is big! It looks fantastic, might just put away some savings for this, noticed that you are using your extra large screen to the best of your ability by having so many windows open yet none of them are squished.
Pfft.
More recycling of information of basic specs freely available from the Apple website and a gazillion of the monkey-see-monkey-do rehash bloggers masquerading "Mac news" wannabees. Couple this regurgitated mass of shameless advertising with unsubstantiated opinion, undocumented hearsay, and unobjective analysis and what do you have? Nothing useful.
Simmer down, folks, and wait for some serious benchmarking analyses. Then the real discussions and debate can begin.
Note to Chris re verb agreement
Chris, your posting contains one of the most common grammatical errors that I encounter, namely use of a plural verb with the subject "none." "None" takes the singular verb "is," since it is essentially a contraction of "no one" or "not one." A second common usage that grates on me is that of the word "amount" when the word "number" or "quantity" or "number" should be used, such as "amount of people" or "amount of cars," etc.
By the way, I strongly prefer matte screens too and will wait until one is available. I'll be interested in the reviews on the new mouse as well.
Don
really?
You are an idiot. Please get over yourself and then come back to society.
