Apple confirms Steve Jobs illness, now recovering

Apple has responded to widely-reported concerns at the health of CEO Steve Jobs, saying the company co-founder has been suffering from a "common bug" in recent weeks.

Concerns as to the health of Jobs, who suffered a rare form of pancreatic cancer four years ago, were raised following his appearance at WWDC this week, when the Mac web noted that he seemed to have suffered some weight loss.

Responding to these concerns, an Apple spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal Jobs was hit with a “common bug” in recent weeks but that he still felt it was important to participate in the Apple conference. Jobs is now recovering with help from a course of antibiotics.

Jobs is seen as nearly irreplaceable at Apple, where he has conducted the most dramatic turnaround of a company in corporate history.

Jobs had what is called the "Whipple Operation" to deal with his cancer...

In the Whipple operation the head of the pancreas, a portion of the bile duct, the gallbladder and the duodenum is removed. Occasionally a portion of the stomach may also be removed. After removal of these structures the remaining pancreas, bile duct and the intestine is sutured back into the intestine to direct the gastrointestinal secretions back into the gut....

.....What are the long-term complications of the Whipple operation?

Loss of weight: It is common for patients to lose up to 5 to 10% of their body weight compared to their weight prior to their illness. The weight loss usually stabilizes very rapidly and most patients after a small amount of initial weight loss are able to maintain their weight and do well.

So all par for the course...

Not Par....

"So all par for the course..."

It's not par for the course, the operation was over 2 years ago, maybe more. His weight loss is even more drastic than 5-10%, take a look at the photo's from macworld 07 to macworld 08 to this event. It's startling, never mind the way he was moving around the stage and used the bench a couple times for support while walking to the side. Something is wrong, unfortunately it's a public thing instead of being a private family matter.

Don't forget, in the past few

Don't forget, in the past few weeks that lead up to the iPhone3G release, you'll probably find that Steve has been working 16 hour days and eating maybe once a day. Busy, busy, busy!

Steve's Illness

55

I have not always been a fan of Steve Job's but in a nutshell his illness is no body's business but his. The laws aside about medical record privacy, this is a personal matter for him and his family. My family went through serious illness and so I speak with probably too much experience.

For those of you worrying about the future of Apple, the future belongs to the young engineers in Cupertino. For those who are history buff's, when Thomas Edison passed on they did not stop making electric light bulbs. Instead, the legacy he left supported the work of other bright engineers.

In closing, leave Steve Jobs alone and let him deal with his health issues. Certainly Apply users have not dropped to the level of tabloid news.

79

Mr. Jobs may or may not have suffered a recurrence of the malignancy that was diagnosed in 2003. The fact that Apple's PR responded to concerns voiced in the blogosphere indicates that the company regards his health as a public issue.

People can lose 10-15 lbs during a prolonged bout with an influenza virus, and this amount of weight loss can cause an already underweight individual to appear emaciated.

"The fact that Apple's PR responded to concerns voiced in the blogosphere indicates that the company regards his health as a public issue."

Actually, Apple didn't respond until the story hit the main media. The Wall Street Journal published a story yesterday afternoon:

I think most of us

58

Are not worried at the future of Apple, but the future of Steve. If it wasn't for him, who knows what would have happened to Apple. We are concerned for his health and wish him only vitality and happiness. If that means leaving Apple to enjoy his life and get better and spend more time with his family, then so be it.

I had a friend who had an

I had a friend who had an extended bout with a bug and looked nearly as bad afterwards.

Someone above commented about his moving around on stage. I actually thought he was quite normal. In the video, I did notice him touching the table with the iMacs a couple of times as he went by, but don't we all do that sometimes when we walk by tables? Not to mention that sometimes he was picking up or putting down the presentation controller on it.

I wish him all the best, and hope he's unaware of all this speculation online.

Lets hope for the best

713

It should remind us that we are all mortal and that even a small bug can cause some serious problems. I too hope that Mr. Jobs will be back to 100% himself very soon.

health

86

Lets all send out good vibes to our buddy Steve! Health and well-being are built upon positive energy, so send some to Steve!!

I hope he's OK. I do know

97

I hope he's OK. I do know that the current speculation is identical to that of a few years ago after his cancer. It will probably continue indefinitely. He is a vegan, and I remember John Lennon and others accused of being anorexic or having AIDS due to their diets. Steve seemed pretty good for someone having a bug. I have ulcerative colitis, and I drop weight whenever I have a flareup- it's worse with Crohn's disease patients, and I'm sure worse still with those who've had the surgery Steve has. He needs some chicken soup or a good pizza.

(OK, no chicken in the soup.. Lotta noodles.)

Public or Private

810

I believe that the nature of his illness is a private matter, and that the fact that he is ill is a reason for AAPL stockholders to be concerned.

AAPL is a very solid company,

126

AAPL is a very solid company, and God forbid Jobs leaves, the people who are responsible for the great designs are more important than the vissionary who created the company. Once his vision was enabled by his great employees, his role becomes less than the value of the creative forces of those people who make Apple so amazing.
He designed the map and laid the path-they just have to be followed.
Perhaps even greater.

God bless him

78

What an amazing person! Truly a gift of God! I have only prayers of blessings for him and his family.

Steve looks very skinny

310

I am not sure what the problem is with Steve Jobs. I think it is very important that Apple provide accurate information about his health as he is the CEO of Apple.

There is absolutely no reason for any fan or shareholder to panic at all. Apple is a grown up company now and Mr. Jobs has many people that surround him and do much of the development and marketing of today's Apple product.

Even if Mr. Jobs needs to take time off the company will not be impacted at all.

So we all wish Steve a speedy recovery and he is an amazing man to show up and do his presentation while not feeling particularly well.

THAT IS THE AMAZING STEVE JOBS STYLE !

Public Disclosure

78

The fact that Apple has issued a press release in response to inquiries from the press now makes the company legally liable for any deliberate misstatement of fact. If Steve Jobs has had a cancer reoccurence and the company is sidestepping the issue by calling it a common bug, they are making themselves criminally liable. Given the scrutiny that the company faced with options backdating, I would think that Steve et al. have learned not to mess with the Feds or the facts. Yes, it would be devastating to the share price were the company to disclose that Mr. Jobs has had a reoccurence of his pancreatic cancer. However I think we have to take the company at its word here. The shorts are propagating this rumor in order to depress the price prior to the 3G iphone launch, which is sure to be a monstrous success.

VERY PUBLIC ISSUE

69

Steve Jobs looked awful. What a great guy! What a great Company. The fact that Steve has survived this long is a tribute to his tenacity and strong will.

That being said, Apple's Board needs to step up and be candid about his condition. If Steve wants to depart Apple with a sterling legacy, he needs to work day and night to identify his successor and find someone with equal or greater vision and make it known. It was great to see individual product managers and VP's up giving presentations of their products. This reflects the true power within Apple. It is unfortunate though, that Jobs has undoubtably been the force and catalyst behind the majority of Apple's recent meteoric rise to power.

The lack of a "Steve Jobs" charisma was evident in the disastrous reign of the last Mac evangelist and if that is what a post Jobs Company will look like, then the stock is worth a fraction of where it is today.

Let's hope that Jobs and the Apple Board act responsibly. Denying reality is what Apple use to do, let's hope that does not again become the status quo.

His style?

97

Of course, he' looks just fine physically... however, his apparels that's more of concerning.

Steve Job's Illness

68

I was so terribly saddened to view Mr. Jobs the other day. Indeed, he looks so very ill. All I can say is what tenacity and bravery he displayed. CEO or not I send my heartfelt prayers and hope that whatever he has, may he have a speedy recovery. Truly a remarkable human being.

Steve Jobs

66

Are we living in a society that is more concerned about a company's future than someone's health...better yet, are we living in a society that we have nothing more to be concerned about (and I mean from a media frenzy and the buzz factor) than a man's private life?

For god sake, he has done great things and he is a spearhead of Apple but above and beyond he is a human being. Let the man live in peace and if he chooses to talk about his life or not, so be it. I am soooooooo tired of the media and the public as a whole being so wrapped up in a notable figures personal life. Put the shoe on the the other foot...we all live our regular lives and go to work everyday. God forbid if someone got into your personal business....we go to work each day with the belief that if we show up and do our jobs that is all that matters and anything else going on in our life is no one else's business. Is it fair to hold someone like Steve Jobs to a different level of privacy? NO! Let him do his job and if he chooses to attend a convention or not, don't speculate. The man has a right to have a life just like any of us and should not be held under a microscope. That's all I have to say.
