iTunes users complain of HD/SD conflict

Some iTunes users in the US are complaining of a problem when downloading High Definition (HD) films or TV shows from Apple's service.

What's meant to occur is that customers purchasing film or TV content in HD will automatically also gain a standard definition version, which they can carry around and play on their iPhone or iPod.

But, as described on an Apple support forum, the implementation appears a little buggy, with some users complaining that after waiting for a significant length of time for the HD version of the title to download, the badly-named SD version then overwrites the higher-resolution video.

"The problem is in the file's name. iTunes typically adds a 1 (or 2,3,etc) to the end of a file if there is already a file with the same name in current folder. For the HD episodes that weren't overwritten, they have an additional number at the end. I watched an HD file appear and then disappear as the SD version was download," one poster explains.

Conventionally, Apple's OS adds a sequential number when duplicate files are found, though this doesn't always occur - a user can elect to overwrite the file. In this case, the film or TV shows are coming down the pipe with the same file name - though this problem is intermittent.

When the standard version of the download starts it overwrites the HD version because they use the same file name. A user explains: "If you pause the standard version so that it doesn't start downloading when the HD version finishes. Then exit iTunes and reopen it. When you start downloading the standard version iTunes renames the standard version with a number 2 at the end so it doesn't overwrite the HD version."

Other users say that allowing 'simultaneous downloads' through iTunes addresses the problem.

I tried to download my 1st TV show last night and nothing happened. I tried and tried and tried. No matter what show i picked, it went in my sopping cart and was grayed out. The price was listed as "unavailable" and my shopping cart said $0.00. When I hit Buy, it just gave me an error that the contents of my shopping cart had changed. I tried everything, but I just couldn't buy any TV show. I tried SD and HD.

I had a back and forth with a "customer support" rep about this very issue. He wasn't very helpful about filing a bug report. His suggestion was a workaround, which involved enabling one-click

I had this same problem downloading season 4 of the office. I lost several episodes due to this problem and I'm pretty upset about it.

If this does happen can you not just download the HD episode again without being charged for it? OK it's a hassle that should have been though of but it's not really the end of the world with today's transfer speeds

if you watched the key note steve never said anything about HD on ipods he just said you can watch HD on you mac.

I cant see where anyone said anything about watching HD on the iPod? The article says you are provided an HD version for your mac and and SD version for your iPod.

I noticed this problem after trying one of the "free" HD iTunes TV downloads (an episode of Monk). I waited for it to download, and then played it on my Mac -- realizing right away that it was not in any way HD. I'm glad I didn't pay for it, and WON'T until this bug is fixed.

Oh no... my free HD show has been overwritten! I'll have to live with SD content!

BOO HOO.

At least the US HAS HD content... suck it up!

I also had the problem of iTunes not downloading with the shopping cart turned on. I turned on one click and it downloads just fine.

Here's an awesome problem. So you download an HD show and get the SD copy with it. The default display in iTunes 8 is the iPhoto-like display. This has the notifier telling me I have 2 of that show (really I have 1, but two resolutions). I drag that thumbnail to my iPhone since I manually manage audio and video. It says that it can't copy because it's incompatible with my device. I would expect this for the HD, but shouldn't iTunes be smart enough to copy the SD purchased version? This is from Apple, from iTunes, to an Apple device. Shouldn't it be smarter?

So i take it itunes hasn't received the speed and compression updates Apple is promising for their apps in the forthcoming Snow Leopard OS? And there was me hoping to see some hints of whats to come...

Rather than adding a digit to the file name why not make the file name "Program Name - HD.m4v" which solves the problem.

These are problems I wish I had. But for now, and for a long time I guess, there is nothing like that (or Netflix or any other competing offering) available here...

As much as I would like to be legally purchasing tv shows there is no offer here for me to do so.

I don't want to wait ages for dubbed shows to be available here, full of commercials and at fixed times (usually late at night because content is rated "16" like CSI).

So I really have to use other alternative methods. Which I don't like but are my only chance of having TV shows in HD on my TV.

HD TV here is not popular as in the US. Only a handful of offerings are available.. And if you want to receive channels such as the ones in the US you have to pay a monthly fortune + satellite dish (no-go for me as I don't own the apartment in which I live) + decoder + recorder (I am not always home).

Stubborn content providers are losing loads of money here...

Sorry for the rant, but I wanted to give my 2 cts to the discussion.
