iTunes no longer allows purchases outside of the motherland

According to Slashdot, that iTunes EULA aggreement that you just agreed to without reading contained some big changes for those of us who travel and live abroad:

"I just accepted the new terms of service for iTunes and found that I will no longer be allowed to access US iTunes outside of the United States. This may seem like no big deal but, I am a US citizen living abroad and I regularly purchase and view TV and movies from AppleTV. Not to mention US citizens just traveling abroad. Does anyone know if this has been enforced or have themselves been affected by this?"

Obviously, Apple wants to sell as much media as possible and doesn't care if you are in St. Petersburg Florida or St. Petersburg, Russia.  This has the entertainment industry written all over it.  Perhaps this had something to do with the recent deals made for DRM-Free Music.

They just don't get it do they?

No change from last agreements

As an active cross-border user of US accounts and Canadian accounts, I can confirm they continue to operate.

I saw similar wording in first iTunes Music Store license too. I believe its due to publishing/broadcasting/etc arrangements which differ among countries

I don't think there is much of a change here unless they start enforcing.

Shame

4244

... after they enabled iPhone purchases over 3G, I really enjoyed music shopping while traveling through foreign country...

It's working outside US

4441

Not true, it continue to work outside US

Surely this can't be true?

4335

Hopefully this change won't affect things. I live in the UK and travel to the US for business and I'm always updating my iPod via iTunes when I'm over there as it's cheaper than in the UK.

Could this mean that they won't work on my UK iPod?

http://www.getthings4free.co.uk

Too bad...

4735

Or perhaps it has something to do with the fact that movie rentals and tv shows are available only in the US...
And if I want them legally I have to create a US account.

But the question remains... Why slash those who are willing to go such lenghts as to create a US account and pay for content and invite them to join other methods of download?

Sometimes I still find the time to wonder at such dumb choices from the content providers...

But then again: nothing new under Hollywood's sun....

(BTW I wish this ment that we will soon see the release of movies worldwide, as well as tv shows, now THAT would be a welcome surprise)

Je-SUS!!

4240

WOW!! The entertainment continues the concentrate its efforts on NOT making money!

You gotta hand it to these guys:
Its CLEAR that the decision makers in those companies are a collection of the most obtuse, moronic, daft, (thanks to Oxford's American Writer's Thesaurus iPhone app for all the cool synonyms), brainless, helpless, HOPELESS, (thanks to Vizzini from Princess Bride for those ones!), individuals ever gathered under a company's name!!

I REALLY hope they don't apply their "business acumen" to other aspects of theirs lives; God knows we don't want MORE crises than the present ones.

It still works

4348

No change whatsoever from the original agreement. Works fine for me.

So...

3549

So please tell me one thing... I live in Poland and have an US account; will it still work?

it may work now, but there is

4344

it may work now, but there is no garantee it will work in the future

Okay, I live in Europe and I

5237

Okay, I live in Europe and I maintain a > US$250 balance in a U.S. iTunes account accumulated with gift certificates just for the hassle-free download of the latest HD TV Shows and HD movie rentals for Apple TV. Once they start to enforce this new policy I'm being forced to use other means to get the content I want. I'm willing to PAY for content but I'm also willing to download it elsewhere for free if I have to.

I think the fact that this is

4747

I think the fact that this is just the "tiny writing" in the agreement but nothing else (i.e. cross-border purchases aren't being blocked as of now) just shows that Apple has no interest in this kind of mentality - even though they have to abide by the "letter of the law" in terms of their agreements with the media companies.

Still works here in Saudi

3939

Still works here in Saudi Arabia .. what's the matter, record industry? don't you want me to buy your content? :)

Seriously?

5338

This has made the rounds around the news at leaste one time before and that was not very long ago.

It has always been in there say some people, I know for a fact that it has been in the agreement for months.

THIS IS NOT NEWS!!

its ben like tis from the beginning

3842

I am a foreigner living in the us. I can access to my country's itunes homepage but they never let me purchase anything they have, saying my purchase location must be inside the country. It is sutpid whatever the reason is.

This has been this way from the very beginning…

4342

Otherwise, Apple wouldn't have had to "open" virtual stores in all the various countries at different times.

This is the fault of the convoluted publishing rights agreements between various publishers not Apple.

All you have to do is get gift certificates or a credit card from another country to get around it.

VPN

4947

I live abroad and was forced to subscribe to a VPN when iTunes access in my resident country was interrupted. I've stayed on VPN ever since... there's loads of services out there, all less than $50 per year.

Not really...

4741

I reported this to TUAW (http://www.tuaw.com/2008/09/10/itunes-8-adds-podcast-controls-terms-of-s...) back in September when iTunes 8 was released.

Apparently it was in the wording long ago, and has clearly had no impact on legitimate users. See the link for more details.

my Australian iTunes account

4042

my Australian iTunes account has stopped working in the UK... :(

Hitting the ADD button in

4540

Hitting the ADD button in iTunes does nothing! I don't know if this is a temporary problem or if indeed this is linked to an enforced country of origin check.

I'm in Germany

4343

As an American living in Germany, I can't begin to tell you how much business I've given to the iTunes Music Store over the years. I have updated iTunes consistently, and looked of any agreements that I have had to agree to.
In the past, I could not download a few TV shows and movies, but never any problems with music of any kind.
This morning (Feb 5, 2009), after I read about this issue, I opened iTunes, and thought I'd try to download the free song of the week.
Lo and behold, a new window opened with a new rule and a checkbox. The new rule specifically stated the you-may-only-purchase-from-ITMS-where-you-are condition. I checked the box, and re-attempted to download the free song.
It worked. Dodged a bullet, at least this time.
So yes, this is a NEW development. But no, it appears to not be all-inclusive, at least not YET.

I'm in Colombia

3949

I live in Colombia (and Im a colombian), I opened my US iTunes Store account in 2007, and immediately began to buy with iTunes Gift cards that some friends and family in the US send me. I intend to still buy from the iTunes Store but Im also willing to find other ways to find music and content if they dont let me do it, I really, really don't understand the labels mind, it isn't a business main goal to make money??? Please somebody open my mind. BTW, my account still works from Colombia

Another problem for the new President?

4143

No joke! Enforcing the rule would cut off a lot of US soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, DoD civilian employees, State Department employees, etc, etc, etc, AND their families living overseas. Someone is going to get dragged in front of a Congressional hearing...no doubt about it.
