Interesting tidbit - Audio in opens up VoiP possibilities on the Touch

Lost amid the rainbow colors and stainless steel iPod Touches is the fact that all of the new iPods have Audio-in.  While this is nifty on a Nano (record notes?), it is downright intriguing for the Touch.

The first thing that obviously comes to mind is the Voice over IP possibilities.  Truphone(iTunes link), the Voice over IP application that was originally made for iPhone *should* work for iPod Touch 2G.  Cool.

But this leaves a lot more interesting gaming possibilities as well.  Specifically, will MMORPG games and such that use audio to communicate incorporate these features?

These are exciting times to be an iPod developer... or user!

If you are near a wireless

If you are near a wireless network all the time, the iPod touch just might be better and cheaper than an iPhone!!!

Does it work on TG1?

Jobs said that the new headphones coming out in October would work with the Touch. Bloggers are supposing that the inline microphone on the headphones will work with the Touch as well. The mic triggers voice record apps. If this is true, it solves so many of my problems and frustrations with the Touch. I can not only voice record, but probably (soon enough) record all kinds of audio--and finally--use the Touch as a VOIP machine. It took a whole year but it looks like the wait is over for a vocal Touch.

Of course, the question is: do the new headphones work with the OLD Touch G1? Has Apple reconfigured the Touch to add audio in? We know that TG1 has active audio in, because people have made mics for it that work. But is it the same configuration or is it compatible with the new headphones? Only the tear-down will tell.

The other possibility is that 2.1 provides a FIRMWARE fix that makes the audio in functional and compatible with the new mic/headphones. Let's hope--cross your fingers.

BTW, the Truphone app will not load on my TG1 with 2.1 installed. Says "not compatible.

2G for line in

Mystery solved: touch 1g has audio record in thru the dock connector, so you need to use Touchmod's mic w/ their recording software. The touch 2G has line in recording thru the headphone jack, which means you can use all the great voice apps now available for the iPhone.
