2007 was a monumental year for iPod hacking and a major milestone looks to be acomplished just before the year ends. The first SIP compatible VOIP solution for the iPod Touch (and hopefully soon the iPhone) should be coming our way in the next 10 hours (as we write this).
The SIP application actually requires a bit of extra hardware on the iPod touch because of the lack of an audio-in port on the device. Thankfully they are selling the microphone as well. The iPhone should eventually support this application without hardware modifications.
Hopefully this will light a fire under the VOIP industry, which hasn't been quick to port their applications to the iPhone. As of now - or in 10 hours - only SIP accounts are supported on the Tochmods VOIP client. Raketu had earlier announced an iPhone application for their VOIP service but as the application was in Flash form, it wasn't able to work on the iPhone. It turns out they hadn't even tested the device on their system.
Developers like Skype and Gizmo have much better things to do with their time than to play cat and mouse with the current state of iPhone/touch lockdown. I think nailing the VoIP industry for not jumping on the iPhone/touch yet is jumping the gun just a bit. These claims are better saved for a post-official SDK period, as we can't even tell how much power Apple will actually provide for third parties.
Agreed. I'm with Wil Shipley, "I don't like to screw with undocumented APIs, life's too short." Once apon-a-time in my youth I did but those days are past. I do plan to give the iPhone SDK a good look when it comes out to see if it gives enough room to bother with. But other than that I don't plan to sink my time into the iPhone. At the best of times putting "commercial" polish on software is extremely difficult when you are faced with hacking, and thus often gives a poor return. When you faced with actively fighting, at every update, the developer of the platform? Stability nightmare.
I'm confused. Will someone please explain what this all means. Is this for free calling on the iPod touch? What about the microphone? I have a not jailbrocken iPod touch. how do I get the free calling thing? Help please!!
It is most definately not Apple. The FAQ (in green text) on the linked page answers the other questions directly. For the iPod Touch you need to extra 3rd party software (which you can order from that site). You also need a WiFi connection to make the VOIP call. Free? Sort of, depending on destination of the call and what service you use.
For the iPod Touch you need to extra 3rd party hardware (which you can order from that site). The hardware is an hack for an external microphone.
It's great to see that the Touch and I'm sure the iPhone will be capable of. I'm hoping once the SDK is released in Feb. that Skype, or the like, will create a native app. Here's to hoping Apple allows it.
As a passioned hardware engineer, I modded an iPod touch to work as a VoIP telephone. The hardware which I built yesterday differs from touchmod’s hardware in the way that the adaptor uses a headset plug instead of a built-in microphone and a different iPod plug with a slightly larger case which can carry a microphone plug connector. The sound quality is very nice with my SIP account and it works well with other headsets I have tested. I find the use of a headset with the iPod more convenient then a built-in microphone - and the iPod plug is easier to built. The costs of the parts for plug was about 3 EUR (4 US$), the headset shown on the photo is another 5 EUR (6$ US).
Just one thing (and completely off topic)... it is really suspicious it's only 10 days to Macworld and you haven't delivered any new info about the future 13" portable mac...

No, for microphone input on the iPod Touch you need to hack some hardware for bringing it in on the input line of the docking station connector.

If you are an owner of an iPhone you can use spreed Connect on

to make cost-effective phone calls with your iPhone as well. A description of the iPod web app is on the Apple webapp site
