None of the entries was exactly... what we've seen. It is very hard to describe the subtle differences from the new iPod and the iPhone. The edge around the outside is the only distinguishing characteristic. For those of you losing your mind waiting to see the new iPod, go look at an iPhone in the dark.
Am I the only one who sees the incredible flaw in 99% of these mockups? Certainly, I would be surprised if Apple didn't utilize the multitouch technology, or include a bigger screen. But this does not mean it will be an iphone without phone capabilities and with 'iPod' written on the back. There is no sense in a company releasing two almost identical products. If the products were that similar, noone would buy both. Consumers would make a choice. Can you honestly imagine owning two products that were identical except one was a phone and one was an ipod. It won't happen.

I imagine most residents of the iPod-owning universe own BOTH an iPod and a mobile. The iPhone is a great device, but with only 8gb of memory, it isn't practical for many consumers. Apple can't fit the iPhone hardware and a 120gb HDD in the same case without compromising the iPhone's aesthetics, so they are offering consumers a choice based on what is more important (mobile vs. music.)

They simply saw the Euro iPhone with different outer design ;)
Well, this better not be true. Otherwise it'll totally burst my bubble. Admin, can you be 100% sure those photos you saw are of the supposedly new touchscreen iPod?
While your argument is legitimate that the new iPods cannot, and simply will not be an iPhone without the phone feature. I do believe they will look very similar. It seems apple is moving more towards the brushed silver look, as you see in the iPhone and the new iMacs. So while I agree with what you are saying I don't believe the new iPod and the iPhone will be significantly different in appearance.
I think you're right in that it won't look identical, but it is going to have to be very similar. When your goals are to make a device as small and thin as possible with the biggestscreen possible, you'll find they all end up looking very similar.
I think it'll be more of a one-material case in just 2 pieces instead of the iphone's 4. All glossy black (and maybe a white verison).
Also, while I was making my mockup, I found that if you use the measurements of the current iPod, and the iPhone, each gives prefect space for 2 different display options for the next iPod. You can fit a 4.3" 16:10 display with 576x360 pixels on the current ipod dimensions. However, you could fit an amazing 4.6" 16:9 display 640x360 pixels on the current iPhone dimensions (of course those are rough estimates, but you get the idea that something similar is very very possible and probable).

I totally agree, and now that the touch is out, and is 8gb and 16gb, it is logical for people to just buy the iphone?
I would have thought the touch would not look like the iphone, because now it is just stupid.
yo who ever you are, you didint look at the prices!!!!!!!
if you have the iphone, then your gonna have to buy the phone and pay monthly too. but if you dont wanna spend extra money and you areint utterly stupid, you would buy the ipod touch.
Apple can't change the look of the new ipod to be too different than the rest of their products. On one hand they have the ipods with the click wheel (shuffles(kinda), nanos, and 5th gen ipods) then they have the iphone which looks totally different. For styling reasons they will have to pick one of these to imitate, otherwise the product line will just become a mash of different designs.
Personally... I'd rather have the 120Gb space and no WiFi.
I just dont really see the point in having it on an audio device really. I can understand mobile phones and whatever, but I think the iPod needs to remain as the simple portable audio device that it is.
Good point, it does make more sense in a phone. But it would be an awesome feature and would definitely separate the iPod apart from any competitors (as if they're not already separated enough). And eventually, I think it's safe to assume that we'll all be able to download music/videos directly to our iPods with wi-fi. Hence the need.
With how the ipod has evolved,WiFi makes sense. The ipod is no longer the stand alone music player it use to be:It can now play videos and look at photos. It has become a portable media player. And not only will it benefit from new media sources(youtube...) but also make it alot more convenient for the user(wireless itunes shop, synching and so on).If the new ipod truly is based on OSX then wifi makes even more sense because OSX will increase the functionality of the iPod.But saying that I still dont know if it's gonna come :(
We have heard exactly 2 sources thought on the matter. One says they do and one says they don't. Unfortunately the pictures we've seen can't show that.
...but your winning Mockup
isn't what I'd like to see,
I mean if it is pretty near
to the real deal why should
an iPod need so much free
unused space above the screen?
And admin can you tell me
if the new ones come all in all
in black or is there a shiny aluminum
cap on the back or is it all aluminum
like the todays nanos? Will we see a
white Version? And is the front made
of glass like the iPhone screens?
Tztztz... so many questions I know,
but maybe one or two hints;)
I can't wait to get one!!!
I still own an iPod photo and I've wanted wifi since the photo along w/ touch. If it happens I will drive to the nearest apple store that night and buy it.
I think the wifi is logical because Apple has the market for media and if they add wifi it will move from the click wheel which has been present since the original into a brand new generation where things change and Apple matures and says "look not only do we dominate we will dominate again and again and again."

I would love to have wifi and a hard drive. I know this is possible, just look at the Zune. I know it is a pretty bad device, sucky interface, etc., but it has wifi and a hard drive. Completely possible. I want an iPod with touch screen and the Internet. Sure, I am a web designer trying to avoid buying an iPhone, but I do think this would be better for those that don't need a new phone or want to deal with AT&T.
I just don't see the point of the wi-fi on the new iPod. I'd rather have the 120GB of storage. I've heard the point of the wi-fi is to either A) have an FM tuner, or B)wirelessly download songs from iTunes store. Neither appeal to me. Give me storage and screw wi-fi.
No, the point of having wi-fi on an iPod is so you can do everything the iPhone does with its wi-fi. That means YouTube, Google Maps, Web Browsing, Email, etc.
I'd take the 16GB Wi-fi model over the 120 GB no Wi-fi.
But then what we've got to consider is that this is still an iPod. The iPhone is the device that 'does everything'. The iPod should just remain as a music player.
If you think about it, the iPod would literally be an iPhone without the ability to ring and text people, which probably would cannabilise sales.
It makes more sense to subtract some of the more Smart-phone features such as Bluetooth and WiFi and then that would most likely make people still buy the iPhone.
Otherwise logically... people would just buy an iPod and not bother with the iPhone at all, just get another smartphone!
The point is not necessarily to preserve iPhone sales, the point is to sell either an iPod or iPhone to everyone in the population.
The kicker though is that the iPod cannot be too much cheaper than the iPhone, if it is going to really be a phone-less iPhone. That means no $299 30GB iPod with everything but the phone part. Maybe the cheapest iPod will still be $299, it just won't have wifi.
Think of it this way- why would Apple care if you bought a iPhone or an iPod, if the iPod was only slightly cheaper in the top-of-the-line, wifi and Safari version? Very little difference to Apple. Some people already have phones they don't want to part with, now they'll still be able to buy an iPhone-type device.
Apple does care which one you buy because there are subscriptions with the iPhone that Apple generates revenue off of. The iPod is a "no strings attached" deal because you can get your music anywhere. They are targeting a different demographic. Why would Apple pull the rug out from underneath themselves on the iPhone so soon after release (...The point is not necessarily to preserve iPhone sales...)?
