First generation iPod Nano "explodes", no survivors

Share

The Consumerist has a tale of an iPod Nano that apparantly blew up while connected to a users PC.  While we can concede that an electrical short can cause sparks, even when connected to a relatively low powered USB port on a PC, it is hard to believe that this thing "exploded."

According to the user, the iPod continued to spit sparks after it was unplugged from the machine:

I am writing this in regards to an issue I have had with an iPod nano, first generation. I have included the relevant pictures of my iPod after this incident and links to related issues.

I had plugged the iPod in to charge on Saturday August 16, 2008. I was using the USB cable that came with the iPod and charging via the USB port on my PC. After being plugged in for somewhere between 5-10 minutes I heard a sizzling sound. I looked down on the iPod just in time to see it explode open and start shooting sparks and spewing smoke. I managed to unhook the iPod from my computer's USB port immediately. I had noticed that a small fire had started on the table I had the laptop and the iPod sitting on, and I managed to extinguish those flames quickly before any apparent damage could be done to my laptop. Unlike in other cases, I've read about, my iPod continued to spew smoke and spit sparks while throwing out some kind of sooty substance from the inside of the iPod for several minutes after removing the cable from the computer. I moved the still spitting iPod from the table and placed it on a book case across the room. I noticed that while doing this, the iPod was still extraordinarily hot to the touch.

Pictures are included in the original article.  For all of the fireworks, it looks more like a normal short.

However, we did find a guy who was able to cook with a USB port...though not very well.  Apparantly it takes 50 usb ports to cook a piece of beef :/

Found your problem right there.

If this iPod caught this dude's PC on fire, it would be doing him a favor. Geez, I really hate uppity Windows users. Go defrag your hard drive, or something.

Dude. Reading the full "manifesto" made me see that this guy is just impatient with some amazingly helpful people. He's just ticked he didn't get what he wanted, when he wanted, period. Obviously he has never, ever done customer service himself. Self-centered whiner.

This is not a news story, just a (sad) guy who threw his toys out of his pram for not getting a replacement ipod the same day that his out of warranty nano caught fire when charging. This could have been because his laptop or cable was faulty, or his ipod was wet....

I got equally upset last year when my 20 year old Buick caught fire after I left an unextinguished cigarette butt in the trunk. I took it straight to a dealership and was reduced to tears when the guy there flatly refused to let me drive off in a new model.

What is happening to American service?

Lithium ion batteries can explode. They contain large amounts of power. If suddenly released, a small explosion could result. They're supposed to be designed to minimize this risk. Lithium is a very reactive chemical.

Ok to start with, the pictures of that thing look like he dropped it and then thought he'd take a lighter to it and his treasure chest desk and say it exploded. And surely a 5 year old can work out that any company with any sort of sense won't just replace something that someone claims has nearly killed them there and then. Hell by this morons logic I can go swap my Macbook for a brand new one after I crush it and say it imploded.

He could have gotten something conductive on the cable and when he connected it, it shorted.

I immediately called up the apple tech support line while I opened a window to clear the smoke out of my apartment.

Idiot was looking to call Apple during a fire? What for? He should have been calling the fire department if he was concerned for his safety.

What the hell is a tech support telephone operator going to do for him related to a battery fire?

This guy needs a brain.

I connected my 1st G nano to a faulty 3rd party USB hub and it actually melted down teh nano. It shrunk in on itself as the plastic lost its form. A few more minutes and maybe sparks etc. but form teh sounds of it the PC USB port had a little more juice than required...

awesome pic for this article. any chance you can lead me to a hi-res source? i can sense a background change in the near future.
