iPods (nano and touch) to get cameras in September?
Macbidouille is reporting that iPod Nanos and Touch will receive cameras during their traditional fall updates. It isn't hard to see how the iPod Touch will receive the iPhone's camera, iPod Touches have been slowly catching up to the iPhone's functionality, getting Bluetooth, speakers, and mic-in. It should also get the new iPhone OS's video producing capabilities, which will be a real differentiator against new products like the ZuneHD. The iPod touch camera will likely be the same 3.2 megapixel model expected in the new iPhone.
They also note that the Nano will get a camera in September. This would be a more interesting proposition because the Nano OS doesn't have as many capabilities as that of the Touch. It is also so small that the quality of the experience would be questionable.
Finally, they mention that the June 2009 iPhones will retain the same form factor as the current iPhones.
New iPods were released on September 9th 2008 and Apple is widely belived to now be on a yearly release schedule with its major products. (the image is a Chinese knockoff btw)

Say goodbye to the clickwheel. Nano is going touchscreen. Current version would be almost wide screen ratio.
I agree. The new iPods will be running iPhone OS. There is no doubt about it.... why pay for yet another OS when you have a great one?
Shuffle and Classic will remain pretty much unchanged.
But Nano will be eligible to run iPhone apps!
The one thing I miss most in my iPod Touch is a camera. I really hope this rumor comes true!
This is a good chance for Apple to sell iPhoto windows version with this upcoming iPod that might have camera. If Apple sells it for $49 as a separate download, many new iPod users will buy it just because of the face recognition. If Apple can sell 1 million download per quarter, we are talking about 200 million software revenue.
or they windows users can just buy a mac
Including the camera would be an interesting move
- they've got the iPhone OS
- they got the small form factor camera with display, plus engineering talent
Why not make a play to squeeze out the low end camera players, with an iPod nano with camera, then make a play on the mid-range with iPod touch with camera.
Hmmm.....
this is something I always thought they should have done
If Apple is putting 3.2 megapixel cameras in the iPod touch, could that mean those 5 megapixel cameras they were ordering could go in the next iPhone? I just don't see them having the same exact specs like that. There still needs to be differentiation.
What itouch needs is a gps as well. With 3.0, True turn by turn could be done, that opens a whole new use for it. That with a camera, you now have something that everyone who does not want to pay a monthly bill would want to have on them at all times. Apple might lose some people who want an iphone, but they will get a lot more people who never would get an itouch. This still leaves the biggest and most important difference between them, one is a phone with internet just about everywhere, and the other is not a "phone" that can only use internet on wifi.
Form Factor ≠ Material
