Mini-projectors for European iPhones - here by Xmas...

Seems Stephen Fry will get his wish for mobile projection devices for European iPhones on news that display technology developer Microvision has received an initial purchase order from its European distributor for its SHOWWX™ laser-based pico projector to be sold by one of the world’s top mobile phone operators.

The initial quantities of Showwx are expected to be deployed within the next month in Europe and at that time more details are expected to be provided by the carrier.

We suspect this reflects the situation in Europe in which competition between carriers for new iPhone customers will demand better deals at the same price and extended solutions-based approaches to attract new users.

Microvision's Made for iPod Showwx laser pico projector, based on the PicoP display engine, delivers a colourful, vivid "big screen" viewing experience from a device about the size of a mobile phone.

“We are extremely pleased to welcome our first global mobile phone operator as a SHOWWX launch customer for 2009,” stated Alexander Tokman, Microvision President and CEO.

“Carriers serve as the frontline to mobile subscribers and as a result often influence mobile handset designs to include new features that delight their customers and help achieve a broader subscriber base and higher revenue per user. We believe that interest from one of the three largest carriers in the world in this application and specifically in Microvision’s PicoP laser projection technology is an important first step towards future accessory and embedded opportunities.”

Users of the Showwx can also connect to other portable media players, mobile phones and notebooks to spontaneously share movies, YouTube, photos, presentations and more with their friends, family or business associates.

The Showwx can project images up to 200 inches across, depending on the ambient lighting conditions, without the user ever having to adjust focus.

I disagree. It would be cool to watch movies from your iPhone like this. In fact, I'd rather have a built in projector than a front facing camera.

It'd be cool. But at the same

It'd be cool.

But at the same time, the brightness of microprojectors is very low... roughly 1/100th the brightness of a cheap "office-style" desktop projector. Using such a device for presentations is stupid - it isn't bright enough for presentations. Using it for a movie is even worse... without enough brightness, motion is muddy.

Look at the sample photo above - this is as good as it gets. Imagine watching even a 3 minute movie or trying to read a detailed chart with such a device. Unthinkable. It's a gimmick.

Yes, someone will introduce a microprojector into a cell phone or camera. Similarly, turntables were introduced to cars in the 1960s.

Don't expect quality or function.

Microvision's Pico Projector

Wrong! Microvision's laser pico projector is plenty bright for presentations in small venues. It's perfect for the road warrior! Watching movies on the cieling of your bedroom or hotel room is fun too!

Don't knock something you're not personally familiar with.

whos says iphone?

Where is there a hint for "micro beamers for iPhone"?

WHERE? One big provider ordered the new micro beamers. who says "for iPhone"?

Made for iPhone

Where? The fact that in their PR Microvision is using the "Made for iPod/iPhone" (can't remember which) slogan which can't be used unless your device has been tested by Apple.

So, they *can* be used for iPhone, but I agree there is nothing that states they were ordered *for* iPhone users. In fact, most electronic devices can be used with it in a plug-and-play style according to the spec sheet. Looks very cool and I could definitely use one on long flights to watch a movie.

What the naysayers forget

158

What the naysayers forget that this will evolve into a high quality display in a few years. Full HD in time. High brightness in time. Look at iPod rev.1 and see where it is just 8 years later. Some people look but they don't see the breakthrough this represents in portable projection. MVIS say that it is not ready for office presentations yet. For a rev.1 product it is excellent and that is why people who know about and factor in evolution potential ... just get it.
Buy MVIS shares b4 they take off is my advice. This deal is their ticket to great things.

A laser projector might be functional...

As I commented on the Stephen Fry article - wouldn't a better use of an built-in projector be for using the laser functionality to project a peripheral like a full sized keyboard? Check this out: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00142C4O8

Disruptive technologies

You need to get your head out the sand and look around. There is a great market for a product like this. Sales people on the go can use this for quick presentations. I would love to get hold of one of these to stream youtube. Just because you dont see a need, it doesnt mean others dont need it. Howmany people thought there is a need to sell peoples used crap on the internet? EBay fills that need nicely.
