Apple's latest iPhone ads take a swipe at Verizon
Apple’s latest pair of iPhone ads go public in the USA tonight, and appear to see the company taking to the defence of current carrier, AT&T, itself targeted in recent Verizon ads.
The new campaign focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, with both new spots asking, "Can your phone and your network do that?"
The answer at present is that Verizon’s CDMA network doesn’t allow such simultaneous events.
During its most recent series of ads, Verizon has criticised AT&T’s network.

Verizon is building out its LTE network now. Their 4g services will be able to do this.
Sour grapes......
Their network 4G is due when? By that time the iPhone will have evolved to another level/gen and the sour grapes will start over agian. Face it… The ATT/Apple partnership is pretty darn good.
That Apple is going to be branching the iPhone to other networks, hundreds of thousands of customers have been lost buy AT&T's crappy services... And the kicker, even when the iPhone evolves to another level, AT&T's service will still be in the stone age.
I get Apple's point here, and that is a handy feature to have, but if you live in an area of poor service with AT&T (which is surprisingly common), you're pretty much NOT able to do this before your call drops -- seriously. I love my iPhone... at home while I have 5 bars. But when I travel downtown in a heavy network traffic area, my service often falls back to EDGE (no simultaneous voice and data), you're pretty much SOL. Also, this is a GSM feature, not really a quality of network feature. T-Mobile 3G can do the same. Maybe this is Apple's answer that they intend never to make a CDMA version on Verizon? Or, maybe AT&T thought they'd leverage the Apple partnership for their benefit, and pushed for this? Personally, I think the more "killer" phone feature on AT&T is the call management. On Verizon, you can't 3-way call unless you initiate it.. meaning that if someone calls you while you're chatting, you have to tell them "hey, can I call you back so I can conference you in?" It's a pain, and the way to do it is reminiscent of landline days, rather than resembling our digital age (press "phone" button, place outbound call, wait for call to connect, press "phone" button again to connect...) Also, Verizon only allows you to conference up to 2 additional parties (3-way calling) whereas AT&T allows up to 6-way calling (true conferencing). When I switched from AT&T to VZW a while back, it was the number 1 feature I missed -- much more so than simultaneous voice and data (even though that's really handy, too.) Also, simultaneous voice and data is available on VZW for phones with WiFi while connected to WiFi. My point is, this is a bit of a soft-sell on Apple's part and not extraordinarily aggressive. There are some legitimate advantages/disadvantages of each carrier. AT&T's Quality of Service depends largely on where you live. If you're in a suburb of a big city near a cell tower, the service is great. If you're in a rural area: not so great. If you live in a major downtown area with heavy cell traffic: useless. Them are just the breaks. I think GSM technology is WAY better, and I applaud AT&T for using it. They get better, cooler phones. The technology (when it works), works better. However, my vote will DEFINITELY be switching to Verizon once LTE starts rolling out, and has decent market penetration. My guess is, Apple is probably talking to Qualcomm to develop an LTE/CDMA/GSM version of the iPhone for 2011/2012 -- not this year. I don't think they have any intent to ever make a CDMA only or CDMA/GSM hybrid. Personally, I think the AT&T contract will continue through 2010, since T-Mobile isn't a huge carrier, and Apple is making too much on AT&T. In 2011, they'll probably introduce a VZW/T-Mobile/Sprint version using an LTE/CDMA/HSPA+/EDGE chip from Qualcomm.
Its so funny how Verizon would take stabs at the iPhone and not just ATT, and expect Apple to not care, when they clearly want it on their network. Verizon is so desperate to get their own "rockstar" cell phone, that they would basically ruin their chances of getting it when ATTs exclusivity ends, which is probably in the not too distant future. It really makes Verizon look jealous and desperate at the success of iPhone and ATT as a result. They should have been patient and waited a year or 2 instead of burning their bridges even more.
I find it ironic that Verizon would advertise Droids ability to multitask, yet they lack the most useful way to multitask, using voice/data simultaneously. That is multitasking that most average joe consumers would care about and appreciate the most. We take it for granted, but if you lost that ability I'm sure you'd realize how important it was.
I can't tell from these ads if Apple or ATT is responsible for these features. I am skeptical that only ATT has the technology to provide these features on Apple's iPhone. I am more convinced that these features are developed by Apple and could run exclusive of ATT.
If these features are only operational on a 3G network, that still means that Verizon has greater 3G coverage than ATT. Does Verizon service switch from 3G to CDMA without user knowledge or forewarning?
All providers can support simultaneous voice and data communications to a single device. It's just some don't.
The new campaign focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, with both new spots asking, "Can your phone and your network do that?"
Since iPhone is only available with ATT the only logical answer to the above question is NO. This does not mean; however, that other service providers are unable to provider similar services if the also hitched their wagon to Apple.
Hilarious how ATT whines and cries about Verizon's 3G "misleading" comparissons which are CLEARLY labled and mentioned 5 times in each commercial and then pays Apple to do an ad for them that IS indeed misleading. Apple and the iPhone have NOTHING to do with this feature, it was not invented by Apple, it not exclusive to the iPhone, wasn't invented for it and every other ATT phone can do this.
Just goes to show ATT's hypocrisy and Apple's complicity in it.
How do you know AT&T paid Apple for these commercials? Stop talking out of your ass if you want people to take you serious!
Precisely WHAT is misleading about these iPhone ads? Apple is showing some things you can do with the iPhone and asking if your phone & network can also do that. They're making no assertion that they invented anything and made no assertion it's impossible to answer the question with a yes. Now, with Verizon, the answer just happens to be no.
But there's nothing misleading about this commercial. So please, wipe your chin and stop frothing.
iPhone, the best smart phone on one of the worst networks. Yeah, that's a great advertising slogan.
So you can't remain on a call with the Droid and check email or internet or another app?
Why would you want to have TCP/IP communications happening simultaneously with a voice call? That makes no sense. It'll just lower the quality of the voice call.
Are you kidding? I do this all the time, especially with emails while I am on the phone.
Lots of reasons: email (in the ad), pull up an address, check your calendar, or go to letmegooglethatforyou.com for your bud who calls you with stupid questions. I could go on, but you get the idea.
Umm..but it doesn't hmmm how do they do that? Is it Magic?
You can open other apps and read emails on a Droid. The CDMA limitation does prevent the Droid from receiving a new email while on the phone. But not from accessing an email that was already pushed to the phone.
That also means you cannot look up something online, send an email, check your Exchange linked calendar while on the phone. This is MORE than just the phone that allows it to do this, Apple's deal with Cingular at the time included that they had to change the way their network behaves to allow for this, Verizon did not want to do that, Also remember the CDMA network of Verizon also limits it's range to this country, once you leave this country you are not roaming on other 3G networks, looks like Verizon backed Betamax and HD-DVD on this one.
Seriously, I hate advertising dept's. It boils down to this. Verizon has wider 3G coverage. They do not have the same theoretical top download speed as ATT, yet real world usage they clock in about the same. The have higher upload speeds on verizon though, since most ATT phones(including the Iphone) do not support HSUPA(not to be confused with HSDPA). Verizon CAN'T(due to CDMA restrictions) do voice and data at the same time. So Verizons has similar download speeds, better upload speeds, wider coverage, you just can't do data and voice at the same time. ATT does data and voice at the same time, has good download speeds, uploads speeds are similar to EVDO, and 3G coverage is currently restricted to high population density areas. Yet none of this matters because people just want a specific phone, so ATT should just say "HAY GUSY, WE GOTS TEH IPHUNES!!" and laugh at verizon.
The question is - "Can your Phone and Network do voice and data at the same time?" CDMA is limited by not allowing data and voice to be complete at the same time, The answer on Verizon is NO!! It cannot. http://www.tuaw.com/2009/11/13/whoa-atandt-has-had-enough-of-the-verizon-slams/ You Verizon fanboys should wise up and get a good phone on a Network that never lets me down. AT&T.
Hours on the phone to AT&T
Broken promises about coverage
I love the iPhone, but am fed up with clinets, friends and family saying 'what did you say' and then the call dropping
My iPhone is not a phone. It's a $100 per month iPod touch

You bought into a cell phone service contract without verifying that it would service your needs? You are, in a word, stupid.
I was a lot smarter. I asked friends and neighbors about their service and tried out their devices where I spend most of my time. Then, once I got a phone, I made sure I verified that it would work for me in terms of what I do. If it didn't, I could always cancel my contract for free during the grace period.
This is a sign of how lazy some Americans consumers are.

Annnd Verizon is DOWN for the TKO!
Turns out AT&T's network can't do that.
With my iPhone, I often use the data network while on a voice call. Both the iPhone device and the AT&T network support this class of network multitasking.
Verizon seems to have elected not to have this feature. They definitely could have it if they wanted it.
"Verizon seems to have elected not to have this feature. They definitely could have it if they wanted it."
May I ask how do you know that? Are you a telecommunication engineer?
Why yes, I am. I worked for one of the big 5... when there were five. Thanks for asking. Not everyone that posts out of their ass. Only some.
