UK iPhone sales over 27,000 each week

Apple has already seized 6 per cent of the handset market with its iPhone - and the future looks pretty positive too, with UK sales hitting 27,000 every week, says Mobile magazine.

The publication adds that UK sales in the first two weeks following launch of the device crossed 50,000 per week.

Marketshare is  believed to be hovering between a 4% and 6% share of the UK handset market, and even reaching ‘high single digits’ some weeks, according to a source close to the matter.

And in order to maintain the momentum, Apple and O2 have introduced the device on a pay-as-you-go basis. First-week sales of the 3G iPhone racked up around 50,000 units despite the systems faults, but those levels dropped to 32,000 after the first month.

An O2 spokesperson said: "We have a strong relationship with Apple and they are pleased with the sales of the iPhone to date."

I think this story really focuses on the important facet of the iPhone story. The iPhone's name is a misnomer. The fact that's it's a phone is secondary to the big picture. The fact that it checks your email is akin to having a toaster in a accomplished chefs kitchen. It just makes toast. RIMM clings to it's dominance in the business market on the "email" thing. Nokia has dominated handsets for voicecalls and sms. Apple taps both and then provides another entire universe that so transcends it all that email and phone functions become spatula's and toasters. Focus on the chef!

My point above is simple. You don't grab that kind of market share in any new market by making another "toaster".

I'm not sure how they calculate 27000 a week to be 4% of the market, given that it's only been on sale for 6 weeks and the market is 60 million people. They're a long, long way from making a dent in Nokia's market.

Well it doesn't specifically say that the 3G iPhone has captured 4% of the market. It just says iPhone, which I assume includes the original. I could well believe that all iPhones in the UK account for 4% of the market at this stage.

My guess is they mean 4% of the current sales rate.

these metrics are intersting, but they are misleading in some way I'm sure... most are. Having said that, Nokia has how many different hand sets available and unlocked in how many countries? The iPhone has only oneand only one handset. It is available in a smaller number of countries tied to a carrier. Just wanted to put that in perspective. If you were to match up iPhone vs. Nokia N95, I'm sure they would be suprisingly close if not the iPhone exceeding it's sales. So it's not particularly fair to say Nokia sells more handsets. Of course they do. They have so many of them. Everywhere.

If they do mean 4% of the current sales rate then that means 675000 phones are sold in the UK each week - I think something has gone wrong somewhere!
