At least one test says the iPhone soft keyboard is fast enough

Since the day the iPhone was introduced critics have slammed the Apple device for its lack of a QWERTY keyboard - but the iPhone’s soft keyboard may still be an improvement on alternatives in the mobile device space.

Now, we’re not saying this is scientific, but website designer, programmer and manager, Phil Gyford, took  little time to run a typing test on a number of devices - and found the iPhone to be more effective than those fiddly mini-QWERTY physical mobile keyboards.

He tested:

  • The Apple Newton MessagePad 2100’s handwriting recognition (1997)
  • The Palm Vx’s Graffiti (1999)
  • The Palm Treo 650’s hardware QWERTY keyboard (2004)
  • The Apple iPhone 3G’s software QWERTY keyboard (2009)
  • Pen and paper
  • A full-size (MacBook) QWERTY keyboard.

For the test, he chose to write a rather powerful and (given recent bank bailouts, perhaps apposite speech by Labour’s Aneurin Bevan. We’ve popped that speech right at the end of this feature. Meanwhile, we felt you might like a look at the results - table below:

"If it’s not already clear, this isn’t a particularly scientific experiment. If you performed the same tests you’d probably come up with different results depending on your proficiency with the various devices. But here are my results, shorter bars are quicker and better,” Gyford notes.

The sample text:

“I have enough faith in my fellow creatures in Great Britain to believe that when they have got over the delirium of the television, when they realize that their new homes that they have been put into are mortgaged to the hilt, when they realize that the moneylender has been elevated to the highest position in the land, when they realize that the refinements for which they should look are not there, that it is a vulgar society of which no decent person could be proud, when they realize all those things, when the years go by and they see the challenge of modern society not being met by the Tories who can consolidate their political powers only on the basis of national mediocrity, who are unable to exploit the resources of their scientists because they are prevented by the greed of their capitalism from doing so, when they realize that the flower of our youth goes abroad today because they are not being given opportunities of using their skill and their knowledge properly at home, when they realize that all the tides of history are flowing in our direction, that we are not beaten, that we represent the future: then, when we say it and mean it, then we shall lead our people to where they deserve to be led!”

Scientific or not.  I agree, and think the soft keypad is much better than other mini keyboard i have used..   The secret is in the software intelligence behind the keyboard that uses probabilities to predict what key you will probably click next... thus less errors and more speed.

Cant do that with a physical keyboard.....

Physical keyboards could have predictive typing, in fact expect to see it more so in Mac OS X 10.7 (the OS would be the place for it to be, not so much the keyboard driver/software).

The switching of languages is the killer application of virtual keyboards.

Fanbois don't need scientific rigor, clear evidence, and objective analyses to form their opinions. Why waste brain cells to engage in intelligent processes when simple minded bias and selfindulgent ignorance are more appealing; and certainly less demanding? Keep on keepin' on, fanbois, the rest of us need the laughs.

You actually wasted brain cells trying to engage in intelligent process while still being simple minded, selfindulgent and ignorant. Just give up before you hurt your brain, you can't speak logic to fanbois.

You're missing the point of the predictive keyboard.

It's not ONLY predicting what words you're typing, so you don't have to type an entire word (I agree... that's simply software and any smartphone could be capable of it).

But the iphone's predictive typing ALSO actually makes the keys LARGER where the software expects you will type next. Not the visual representation of the keys, but the area of their receptivity. IOW... the keyboard is much more forgiving of the inherently imprecise typing on small keys.

And that is a limitation tiny physical keyboards can not overcome. This can only be done with a soft keyboard.

Which is why many people actually type faster on their iphones than they did on their blackberrys.

I say it all the time...

Let's not forget the soft keyboard has a huge advantage for those who use two languages daily (like myself). It's so easy to switch seamlessly between the two keyboards.

Why not? i suspect this will become standard practice in time.

I knew this 3 years ago, about 4 days after buying my first iPhone... Once you master it, you'll never need or want to use anything else.

I still think the iPhone keyboard should be improved in some ways, but it's the best thing out there right now.

I think the keyboard is ok, but the auto correction could be improved.... Some times it tells me stupid things in different languages.

Maybe auto correction should tell you stupid things like your stupid for triple posting, in different languages.

I cannot agree more either! My biggest problem with my past mobile phones was that when I was abroad (say in Russia) I couldn't type cyrillic on my British Nokia. Now it's no problem whatsoever with the switchable software keyboard on the iPhoen.

The only thing I'm waiting for are one of the larger international carriers (say T-Mobile, Orange or O2) to offer a well priced international data streaming plan for when abroad.

When I travel, my iPhone is close to useless due to the horrendous roaming data charges!

It would be so useful for students and business people alike, who travel a lot these days, to be able to subscribe to a "O2/T-Mobile/Orange Europe Plan". The US is way ahead there if you think about it...

Ok, VOIP is coming, so cheap calls (and "texts" via email) will be there soon, but how come none of the big carriers hasn't exploited their international network as a competitive advantage is a mystery to me. It'll all boil down to data plays soon anyway, why not use a little foresight and offer the international data plan now!

How's the US ahead of Europe in that regard? I don't know of any affordable US data plans (flatrates) that you can use abroad.

The US are ahead in the sense that geographically speaking you have a much further reach with your AT&T contract. I mean the US is pretty much the same size as Europe and you can use the same data plan in California as you would in Florida (I assume anyway).

He needs over three minutes to write that on a full size keyboard?

221 words divided by about 3.2 minutes = 69 words per minute. Not a bad rate, actually.

Hmmm...but was he using the auto-spell feature on the iPhone? If he did, it wouldn't be a fair comparison of the keyboards. But I do agree in general. I'm currently using a Palm Pre, and I can actually type faster on my iPhone (when the iPhone is in landscape mode and not factoring the auto-spell). The Pre's keyboard is too narrow and tiny. And it gets crummy sometimes. I think the fewer moving parts there are, the better. Because of easier cleaning, hygiene, etc.

How did he get his hands on a Newton???

...and then he grabbed it!!!

How did he get his hands on a Newton???

Yes its very true the keypad is very smooth. The intelligent keyboard on iPhone does far more than a fixed keyboard ever could. With this keyboard at your fingertips, typing is easy and incredibly fast. The iPhone software keyboard is adaptable, allowing you to switch between more than 40 international layouts.

Wow. That's one of the longest sentences I've ever seen.

I must say nice work guys .keep up with your good work.We always look forward to your work.

The first thing that comes to our mind when using a keyboard is speed and the second thing is accuracy. Hence, if you wanna to find it both I think soft keyboard is great. Thanks for the good work.
