Demand for iPhone 3G is off the charts
Citing yet another of those shadowy "sources" that seem to wander about online, TechCrunch alleges Foxconn to have ramped-up its production to 800,000 units per week. The report notes this to be "above current full capacity", and warns there may be some quality control issues ahead. Apple sold just 6 million of its first generation iPhones, but right now Foxconn is producing the mobiles at a rate of 40 million per year - and Apple was originally expected to ship just 25 million of these devices. The iPhone is available in 23 countries today, with plans to triple availability this year.
"We’ve heard that Foxconn was initially told to expect sales of up to 40 million units in the first year, but that those numbers are being revised upwards sharply," TechCrunch reports. Strategy Analytics recently pointed out that Apple's global handset shipments fell sharply between Q1 and Q2 this year, from 1.7 million units in the first quarter of 2008 to 0.7 million in the second quarter. That was as purchasing slowed down in advance of the release of the iPhone 3G. That gave Apple a worldwide marketshare stood of just 0.2% in that quarter. Strategy Analytics expects Apple's handset market share to rebound to 1.1 per cent in the third quarter - however, should TechCrunch sources be correct and Apple achieves sales of 40 million in a year, this equates to ten million in a quarter, and gives Apple a much higher slice of global handset shipments. And a commanding slice of the smartphone market.... ( Filed Under: )

No Kidding! LOL!
and how about hiring some more programmers to fix your bloody buggy iPhone 2.0 OS as I have to reset my iPhone every other day.
Apple is really starting to piss me off!
Software is a mess!
Demand for returns and help at the Genius Bar is "Off the Charts" also. The buggiest worse rollout in Apple history. Renamed the "iBrick" on forums all over the net.
Many like myself are wondering why we waited on a line to get a product that was no where near ready for market. Crash Crash!
They should have called it the Apple Logo Flashlight!
Guys, since your iPhones
Guys, since your iPhones suck, care to send them my way, I don't mind owning a smartphone that crashes.
iphone
could it be that with so many people buying the iphone, the ones complaining really haven't taken the time to correctly learn how to use the iphone. my brother has one, thinks its the greatest, has had no problems whatsoever. he's teaching me how to understand all the features (i'm a tech rookie) before i buy one.
Off the charts
I can only guess, from some of the comments here and elsewhere, that demand for an unreliable, crashing, buggy product is off that charts.
Or just maybe, the iPhone isn't as bad as some would have us believe, but is really a smash hit with the vast majority of users and is flying off shelves.
That number of .8 million a
That number of .8 million a week seems wildly optimistic. Even if Foxconn could build that many iPhones a week, Apple wouldn't be able to sell that many. It seems highly unlikely the iPhone currently has that much demand. It would seem if these numbers were true, then there'd be a hellava lot of new smartphone users or WinMo and Palm users dumping their old models.
I just hope this massive push doesn't backfire in Apple's face due to quality control issues. I'm always concerned when potential sales numbers seem almost impossibly high to believe and the stock continues to drop in reverse proportion.
Foxconn must have a heck of a production line that it can just run above current full capacity at the drop of a hat. Those Chinese workers must make a hellava team that can work around the clock without vacation time. That could never happen in U.S. of A.
It will get better
Sorry to hear that.
How clean of a system are you running?
Have you downloaded very many apps?
It will get better. Apple should have an update out in September is what I heard.
Currently I just have a few of the simpler free apps downloaded. The main one that hiccups is Aurora Feint, and it has improved alot with an update.
No hard crashing for me
I have a original iPhone upgraded to the v2.0 OS. I've installed and am using 26 iPhone apps I got from the AppStore (8 paid apps). I've tried out almost 2 dozen more - but trashed them if I didn't like 'em or if they were buggy.
I've had a few issues with apps crashing (taking you back to the Home screen), but even those have been reduced as apps are getting updated (I check for and download updates weekly). I've had 2 hard-lockups, requiring a power-off, both within the first week - and I discarded both those apps. I have had NO app crashes or lockups from any of Apple's bundled apps.
If your iPhone is hard-crashing, dump the 3rd party apps you've installed that are causing it... (or update them).
not seeing the problems other are
I stood in line and they ran out on the 11th--had to go back two weeks later to pick up my phone. I haven't had any problems whatsoever with mine. No crashes and a full page a apps installed. I'm guessing most problems are ID-10-T user errors....
my phone has never
my phone has never crashed.... 2 weeks of constant use... everything is as I expect... since I have owned 8 macs in my last 15 years... it is as I expect... awesome!
Mine works fine
My family's 2Gs run 3G software. All 3 iPhones are reliable and have served us for over a year. While we have had to reboot them a few times, and the first release of 3G software is a little less stable than the last 2G software, II can report that they are much better than the flaky Verison phones that they replaced. I cannot tell you the number of times having access to a smartphone has been a huge advantage in our busy lives.
I got my iPhone 3G right
I got my iPhone 3G right after launch and have downloaded a dozen or so apps, so far no problems whatsoever.
Often times I notice when Apple launches new products or OS versions sites such as this one are bombarded by what appears to be disgruntled Windoze users--really rather silly since it's like Ford Escort owners being upset with Mercedes or Jaguar owners.
It's just tech-envy.
