UK report claims iPhone nano for Christmas

Remember our report when we explained Apple's preparing to diversify its iPhone range in order to bring its products within the reach of a wider customer base?

And recall Peter Oppenheimer's intimations that the company plans to introduce a range of products other competitors can't match, and that Apple is willing to sacrifice a little margin to make its offering a success?

And, of course, you can't ignore that AT&T has persuaded Apple to allow it to remain the exclusive iPhone carrier until 2010...(there had to be something more in it for the carrier than just one model, after all...)

This morning in the UK reports claim Apple plans to introduce an smaller, cheaper 'iPhone nano' in time for Christmas 2008. This will be made available to pay-as-you-go customers and will cost £150, the Daily Mail explains.

"A cut down version, with the candy bar shape of iPod nano music players, would be a huge hit as a Christmas gift," an industry insider said.

The Daily Mail

Don't ever trust anything you read in this second rate paper, the daily mail is mock-worthy paper. They have no track record with this kind of thing either. Huge pinch of salt people!

 You remember the iPod

4439

You remember the iPod factory story of a few years back don't you? The one which saw Apple send a working group to the factory iPods are made in to ensure things were up to scratch, the , erm, true report?

That was the Daily Mail

I could definitely see an

4933

I could definitely see an iPhone nano or shuffle in the works. These would be great starter phones for tweens who still wanted an iPhone no matter how hard their parents said no. The pics, although they look pretty impractical in form factor, seem very logical in the interface. I would make sense to have OS configurations like that. You wouldn't want junior going to porn sites on his iPhone shuffle, eh?

You couldn't be more wrong.

4132

You couldn't be more wrong. The pics are only mockups. I don't think Apple will diversify their iPhone line. THEY DON'T COMMENT ON UNRELEASED PRODUCTS!

 I can't believe people are

I can't believe people are discussing the PICTURES, when I already said the pictures used are not 4 real. Does my tiny mind in.

LOL, you have to know people

LOL, you have to know people don't, or can't read any more.  They just look at the pictures; that's why highly graphical, overly flashy websites are soooo popular.

Thaks for the post!

Pictures

Why post obviously fake pictures (a nano without an iTunes button)? No real content so you thought you'd add some fake pictures for speculation?

I think that it would be

4337

I think that it would be stupid coming from Apple and/or AT&T.

They just released the iPhone 3G. Xmas time is waiting —and the factories are ramping at full steam—. Then, they can harvest all the iPhone-wishers.

By January, maybe they will announce the iPhone 4G (AT&T and the rest of the world is betting on the same standard) and keep going capturing the top smart phone market.

In the meantime, AT&T put the data-money in its pockets and Apple puts its 30% from the App Store.

Then —maybe— by January 2010, Macworld keynote will revolve around the iPhone Nano. (Do somebody thought of what a mess will imply an iPhone shuffle? You are speaking with your girlfriend and shuffles to speaking with your wife!)

I don't think so. Can you

3538

I don't think so. Can you imagine trying to read your email or surfing the web on one of these? I think a larger form factor that's currently creating a buzz on the Mac blogs: the MacBook touch (a portable computer in a tablet design using multi-touch similar to the iPhone) makes a lot more sense.

@I don't think so. Can

@I don't think so. Can you

Macbook touch coming or not there WILL BE more than one version of the iphone. I think the point of a iphone nano would be that you CAN'T surf the web on it. At least that is one theory.
But between now and Christmas more than likely it will be new ipods, notebooks and hopefully a "Mactouch". By MacWorld 09 though you will be seeing a new iphone nano device. It won't be a flagship iphone but another level of iphone so the product could start branching out into a family of model types.

A year ago, I couldn't see

4237

A year ago, I couldn't see what a iPhone nano would be like. The iPhone's essence is the combination of a phone, an iPod and an internet device. Leaving one of those out to make a cheaper version, would degrade the iPhone to a 'standard' phone, I am sure that's not what Steve wants.
But now the iPhone 3G is here, I can see some possibilities. I guess the iPhone nano could still be a phone, an iPod and an internet device, but without all the enterprise functionality (like Microsoft Exchange), without GPS, and may be even without 3G.

The nano most likely will be

3541

The nano most likely will be 3G phone + ipod - thats it, no mail, no safari, no wifi, no maps etc. No way they will jeopardise their cash cow, but coulds see a way of Apple introducing more carriers - Apple want money from everywhere possible!

iPhone Shuffle

3741

To be a real iPhone Shuffle, wouldn't you have to lose the screen, and it only calls someone from your contacts list at random?

Hmm.. You got the iPhone

3537

Hmm.. You got the iPhone Shuffle mock-up wrong. There will be no display or buttons. It will dial your contacts randomly. There are no other features.

iPhone nano

The article appears in todays Finncial Mail which forms part of The Mail on Sunday which is one of the mosts respected newspapers in England. The source is given as -an industry insider from mobile phone group O2. I would not write this off as conjecture.

I just want to point out -

3938

I just want to point out - to poster above, I've also seen this report in the UK, and while the implication appears to suggest an O2 source, it does not definitively say this, so the story isn't necessarily based on an O2 leak, indeed, with news desks worldwide, the Mail could have picked this up from any one of the existing carriers in the know on this plan. It's important to point that out, though. I'm not saying an O2 source,

London calling? Its just one big suppository. You can figure out where to shove it.

3840

To clarify, The Mail and its partner in crime The Mail on Sunday is not a respected newspaper, it's a rag.

An iPhone nano is an incomprehensible plan. Make it physically smaller and you risk harming usability, cut out features and you risk having the sales canabilised by iPod touch.

Sounds like they've either been lied to, assumed a lot or are lying themselves.

Shuffle is a stupid idea

3239

Okay I think the shuffle idea is kind of stupid. No offence people. It's just what is the point of an iPhone with no internet? What is the point of it if you can't see anything really, because it's so small?

Luther Cherry is a teen blogger...(sort of)...trying to handle school and everything Apple. Wish him luck!

Is it August?

I had to check my calender to make sure it isn't April
