iPhone for India on Vodafone, SeptemberSubmitted by Andy Space on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 10:56.
The company is partnering with Vodafone India for the launch, which is expected to take place in September. Initial reports claim the 8GB iPhone will be the first model to ship, with a higher-capacity version set to reach the sub-continent in mid-2009. And Vodafone may also pick up the deal as network partner for Australia. “The carrier deal for India is being worked out with Vodafone,” an Apple source, told the Business Standard, adding: “Vodafone could also become the carrier for the Australian market once iPhone is launched there, though more than one carrier is likely for Australia.” Vodafone officially denies any such deal, though company insiders have confirmed it, the report claims. Apple is engaged in a slow expansion into the country, with plans to open a second store in Bangalore and a third in Chennai this year. India is a critical market: the Indian mobile subscriber base is set to almost double to 500 million by 2010, the report explains.

Oh boy. Wish they had gone
Oh boy. Wish they had gone with Airtel. Better coverage, better features, cheap EDGE too. Oh well.
And guess what? Those 8GB
And guess what? Those 8GB modells are the ones that Apple isn´t able to sell-off in advance of the launch of the 3g iPhone, i guess :-)
Very late move, am not impressed!!
Looks like Apple Sales & Marketing guys are sleeping in deep slumber when it comes to Indian Mobile market. iPhone should have been launched in India during Q3 of 2007. It's too late! And I saw the pricing model for 8 GB, costing more than $500. What the heck?? I call it as Dumping and Looting. But Indians are not fools and the market is very much price sensitive. So in that sense Apple entering India very late, that too with that idiotic pricing and model plans!! Good Luck to Jobs.
pricing??
I really hate this indifference about apple pricing for India... thr is almost a difference of 250-300 USD from the base prices in USA... steve jobs seems to give nothing back to this country in return to his spiritual enlightenment .. why they dont set up a manufacturing unit in India like Dell ... I can comfortably buy a dell laptop in india with the same pricing as in US but not apple notebooks... Apple withdrew its tech support from India in 2006 but you did it even before apple created a market here... if Jobs is listening then PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR PRICES FOR INDIAN MARKET, ITS A HUGE HUGE MARKET FOR ALL APPLE PRODUCTS AND THERE IS OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW INNOVATIONS
