Why would they be FUD?

I don't think the rumors are true (3G shouldn't be a "premium" feature once they've figured out the battery life issues, but standard), but why should this be FUD? I don't see how they would spread Fear, Uncertainty or Doubt? Maybe disbelief, but who would be afraid of the iPhone line becoming more diverse?

FUD works in mysterious

FUD works in mysterious ways.

Most people think of it as a campaign to make people uncertain and doubtful about a particular product, theoretically to favour a competitors product.

But it can also be employed to make people uncertain and doubtful about a current generation of a product, which can also hurt sales, stock prices, etc. of the target company, even if the fearful are just holding out for the next generation from the same company.

Either way, FUD is FUD,

How is this even news?

C'mon... Apple introduced the iPod... then they diversified their iPod lineup - of course they're planning on doing that with the iPhone. They need an iPhone to tackle every price point.

I agree with Georg on this

I agree with Georg on this on completely. In no way shape or form should 3G be a premium feature on what is already a premium smartphone. I do think that apple will need to diversify if it wants to be part of the phone market that isn't targeted at the high-end spenders, but this should not mean that 3G shouldn't be part of a standard iphone.

Disgaree for a June launch, but maybe one day

No doubt they will bring out a range of iphone models eventually, however a June release is definitely off the cards. The resources needed to develop multiple phones would be huge. Add into the mix the fact that Apple probably have their hands full with the iphone SDK. Also a different form factor would tend to point to a tweaked or redesigned GUI. I really can't see there being more than one IPhone for the next 12 month, maybe longer. What I could see however, is the nano becoming a complete touch interface come October, along with the ipod classic being dropped all together.

I think it has to be true if Apple wants to be taken seriously!

That is about it, if Apple wants to be taken seriously it has to be more than a one pony show. In other words they have to have alternatives for people that have no need for a massively capable Cell Phone.

As to the constant whining about 3G lets face it many people simply don't need it and would welcome a discount to stay with it. I know I would. WiFi is good enough when high speed is needed. Just imagine a replacement for the current iPhone that offers up EDGE at a price of $100 and a monthly plan half the current iPhones rate.

I could see AT&T going this route simply to help moderate demand on its growing 3G network. People in the know realize that EDGE isn't really that bad and that they have a real alternative in WiFi.

About the "WiFi is good

About the "WiFi is good enough when high speed is needed" part

Yes WiFi is great when you need high speed.

But I don't know if there is free WiFi all over the place where you live, work, move around.

But here in Denmark EU, and the parts of EU I have been in.
There is not free WiFi acces.

There is not even full covert of payed WiFi.

So many times is easyer just to have you own high speed internet connection whit you.

An by the way the WiFi hotspots that we have over here.
Beside you have to pay to use them, then if you are lucky then its 2Mbit/s down 512Kbit/s up.
And that you have to share whit all that is om.

Whit 3G you get around 700Kbit/s down almost anywhere.
3.5Mbit/s need most citys, and 7.2Mbit/s in the big citys, and you don't have to share the speed whit anyone else
and the up speed is 384Kbit/s

So that is why I like 3G better then the WiFi part.

But ok if you only use you phone at home, at you own WiFi spot, and at work/school, where you have permission to log on to the WiFi network, then yes, the WiFi is cheaper and faster then 3G
