iPhone 3.1 to ship next week, offer MMS and more, AT&T hints...
AT&T has hinted a new version of the iPhone OS will ship later this month, iPhone Software 3.1.
The new software is likely to deliver on some of the promises made to AT&T users when iPhone 3.0 shipped, specifically MMS messaging (at last) and the capacity to engage in Bluetooth file transfers.
iPhone 3.1 will also likely offer support for any of those features we’ve been hearing so much rumour and speculation about, such as social networking of iTunes songs played, potentially a subscription-based streaming music service and more.
We also predict the software update will be made available for iPod touch users (yes, that’s pure speculation, but let’s face it, it’s the least likely unlikely you’ve ever seen this side of a specious double-negative).
Whatever the content of the new patch, we’re pretty certain we’re going to know by the middle of next week on September 9, when Apple opens the curtains and informs the public and the industry of just how it’s going to improve its iPod products to maintain another year or two of market leadership. (Hint: It’s not just cameras, it’s what you can do with them that matters...).
Also of interest to industry watchers is if we’re going to find out what those recently noticed ‘iProd0,1’ and ‘iProd1.1’ products are going to be - 6-inch giant iPod touch maybe? Or just a casual slice of rumour-mongering?
Wait and see. It’s open season on speculation once again. Enjoy.

Not holding my breath, especially not for tethering. I hope all this talk of Apple kicking AT&T to the curb is true, and AT&T exclusivity for iPhone in the US is almost over, if for no other reason than to get AT&T moving on features that should have been available long ago.
i guess the udpate is also needed for the tomtom-gps-hardware, which could also be a reason for tomtom being late with the car kit.
iPhone already has MMS...
Yes, but only for those of us on moderate-to-decent networks. It sounds like AT&T have been extremely negligent from the various American news sites. There are even a few lawsuits alleging that AT&T's and/or Apple's promise but failure to deliver MMS to Americans constitutes actionable misrepresentation.
Damn! Yeah of course Verizon may be a better choice to enable the full potential of the iPhone. I'm planning on getting a MacBook Pro that would help a lot.
When it comes to tethering dont think its gonna be free, it will be a bolt on and most people arleady complain about the 30.00 data package, all youll do is add an additional 30.00 on for thethering with a 5gb limit anything over that is about .04 per kb. Just like the Cracberrys and any other device that is tether capeable...
Its free. or so thats what most people are saying. we are already paying for it.
Then this makes Verizon a more better and sensible choice. AT&T want the customer base but slow on taking care of those customers. Tethering would be nice. I want a MacBook Pro that tethering would help a great deal because I be on the road often later this year.
Apple's inability to include the dvorak keyboard layout is perplexing. I'm sure it will be in the rumored touch device, so why not the iPhone?
I use tethering now, and won't be giving it up without at least a dvorak keyboard layout as a "give" by Apple
The Dvorak keyboard layout is niche, at best, even on a computer. How many people do you honestly think are clamouring for it on a *phone*?
I'll give you a hint. It starts with "z" and ends in "ero".
I'm sure Apple have allocated appropriate resources to deal with this urgent need.
ha ha yeah, I had to google it to find out what it even was to begin with. The iPhone is supposed to be the smartphone for everyone, not just .018941651% of the world, who require some odd keyboard. I'm just sayin... ;)
.018951651% im interested in where you get this statistic as i could not find one for the number of users of dvorak
being a dvorak user myself, i actually have to hack my iphone to get it into a keyboard that is useful.
now, lets say your statistic is correct:
among the layouts available by default on the iphone is Estonian. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estonian_language it seems that there are 1250000 speakers of the language. Now from http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html there are a total of 6782927424 people on the planet.
1250000/6782927424 = .0001842862118172...% of the population. Thus, if your statistic of .018% use dvorak, then we are already 100x more popular than a layout that is already default on the iphone... good job sir
i love the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot=WTF

OMG .... ROTFL .. to funny ....
It will be ABOUT TIME! MMS has only been available for ten FUCKING years and iPhone has been available two FUCKING YEARS !!! How PATHETIC !!!
Who really uses MMS.........................except for people who have shitty phones that can't email full picture emails. It'll be nice addition, but not a deal-breaker for most.
You come across as one of those tech bubble world elitists who think that just because they have all the latest high tech gizmos that everyone does.
Smart phones are far from ubiquitous, and far from the majority of cell phones out there. MMS is very much used by the majority of the general population, and until that changes, MMS on our iPhones will be a much welcomed addition to the feature set that will allow us to communicate easily with those who don't live and breathe for the latest in smartphones.
The problem isn't that 'we' need MMS, it's that some of our contacts have sub par mobile phones, and att's 'veiwmessage' service sucks... It would be one thing if it set up a direct link from messages to the image/video, but when you have ridiculous logins...
Arghhh.... At&t you are the iPhones achilles heel!
I'm sure OS 3.1 will launch with or very near to the iPod event based on a whole bunch of factors, but where in the supplied link do AT&T hint that it'll be next week? They just seem to say "September", from what I can see?
I'm not a big MMS user either, but there are several of my friends that love it and send me quite a few. I will be glad to FINALLY get away from the stupid viewmymessage.com nonsense...
My 2G was far more usable w/r/t battery than my 3GS.. as an occasional user, I still need to plug this thing in 2/day.
I doubt it will do much for the battery, unless they're able to software decrease the cpu speed; and then, if they do that, what's the point of having the 3GS, which was S for SPEED? Higher performance comes at a cost, in both terms of cost and battery life.
It will be ABOUT TIME! MMS has only been available for ten years and iPhone has been available two YEARS !!! How PATHETIC !!!
bethcha the new update comes 09/09/09
Finally we have something in Canada first
both mms and Internet tethering work flawlessly
on my iPhone 3G/MacBook pro
A first in Canada!
Internet tethering works flawlessly
on my iPhone 3G/MacBook Pro, with
faster than anticipated Safari Browsing.
I am still wondering how MMS and tethering was not missing for all other mobile phone users! I dont use the term smartphones, because a standard Nokia could do both of them 3-5 years ago in Europe on a standard 2G T-Mobile network.
Is AT&T a little bit behind?? :-)
AT7T sucks ass big time! I FUCKING HATE AT&T!!!
I'll never understand why the industry didn't change over to Dvorak keyboards once the mecahanical typewriter bit the dust. I had tried using the Dvorak keyboard many years ago when I had an IBM Selectric. I had bought a Dvorak ball for it and made some key stickers for the layout on the keyboard. I tried to learn with minimal success, but there wasn't much point if none of the jobs I worked at ever had a Dvorak layout keyboard.
Personally, it's only good for speed trials since it groups those vowels under the left hand home keys. I was already at the 100 WPM level using a regular keyboard and I thought the Dvorak would boost me a lot higher. It didn't because I just didn't put enough effort into it and it was just a waste of my time.
Most people type well under the speed of ever having the need for a Dvorak keyboard, so it will never become popular. It's so funny that our present day keyboard is a design to slow people's typing speed. Weird fact.
We got the 3.1 update 2 weeks ago in Australia unless your's somthing different
