Positive iPhone numbers continue to pour in

Mon, 12/17/2007 - 14:44 — Seth Weintraub

A few weeks ago, Net Applications showed that iPhone was much stronger than anyone could have expected in terms of browsing market share.   This week, Canalys showed that iPhone sales have surpassed Windows Mobile in North America.  RoughlyDrafted did a lot of legwork on the numbers but the short of it is that iPhone is working Windows Mobile.

Can these numbers actually be right?  Is iPhone really outselling Windows Mobile phones?

Just as a comparison, Windows Mobile was selling well over 3 million devices/quarter globally at the begining of 2007.  If all these numbers are right, Apple is not going to have any problem reaching 10 million iPhones.

On first blush my confidence

On first blush my confidence with that article is shaken by two things. The photoshopped picture with Bill Gates == USSR and that last chart where they don't put the iPhone/Touch in the bottom slot even though they have (slightly) fewer hits. The former, while funny in a "Something Awful" way, doesn't exactly scream "serious". The later says either sloppy or trying hard to slant. For me that really undermines the rest. If they have done solid research that is for the most part spot on that'd be too bad. I would be interested in any comments by others that follow up with digging through the details.

P.S. The tone of the words in other places in the article bother me too but not enough to pull out quotes.

First off, its not Bill

First off, its not Bill Gates!....

Then who is that guy on the

Then who is that guy on the left? I'm pretty sure it isn't the patriarch Bishop of Moscow praying for my soul.

No, it's Micro$haft CEO

No, it's Micro$haft CEO Steve Balmer preying to the gods of Profit!

he is right it is bill gates

he is right it is bill gates that because he actually took the time to go over to roughly drafted and look at the articles there, and there is one that compared comunism and Windows. he is not referring to the picture of balmer with a chair.

It is more "sales" and not

It is more "sales" and not more "use" in North America. Remember, quite a few (18-20%?) iPhones sold in the US have found their way outside of North America.

not necessarily found their

not necessarily found their way outside of North America, found their way outside of AT&T - probably most of those go outside of US

I'm not 100% sure, but it

I'm not 100% sure, but it appears that people are very quick to read this information in the typical mac way. After all, if people are surfing as much with iPhone as with Windows Mobil, then there must be as many iPhones as Windows Mobil phones, right?

Well, here's the deal. When you buy and iPhone, you also line yourself up with an all you can eat data plan. This means that with the iPhone, you never thing about how much you're surfing since there's no per minute or per megebyte tarriff.

On the other hand, most Windows Mobil users are using plans that are less predictable. Many Windows mobil users are in fact using telephones which are connected to plans that are extremely expensive to surf on. I personally use a plan which charges me up to $4.50 per day for surfing. So if I use less, I pay less, but if I use more, it's capped. Still, it takes accessing a handful of pages to run up a $4.50 phone bill on my Windows Mobil.

iPhone is being used more like a typical laptop PC. The difference is, now when people go to the coffee shop, instead of breaking out the notebook, they break out the iPhone. In my case, the iPod touch. Of course, I also use my Vaio UX series palmtop, it's a much better browser.

The other real problem is, Opera hasn't release a version 9.0 (or later) browser for Windows mobil. This means, you're stuck with a lot of bad choices for browsers on Windows mobil. So people I believe are more inclined to surf through their notebook than their phone even if they have a good data plan.

There are hundreds of reasons why the iPhone is scoring so high on thise charts, but the real question in my mind is, why are so many people paying obscene phone bills to own iPhone and not surfing more. Seriously, the iPhone bill is a nightmare. I live in Norway, we pay more per phone call than nearly any other country in the world and the fact is, even with my heavy use and international phone calls to the US and my data usage (occassionaly), I don't come close to the iPhone bill.

My personal opinion is that the iPhone is similar to the playstation in many ways. It's not clicking in the general consumers' heads that the iphone is an everything device. They're treating it like a telephoen with an MP3 player. Remember the reports that most sony playstation 3 owners didn't know they had bluray in the system.

So, I'm just wondering, why isn't the iPhone in the desktop comparison yet. In reality, I'd have expected more like 2-3% overall share by now. But it looks like too many users have bought it on the "Oooo... Shiny..." purchasing method as opposed to the "Wow, this could actually make me more productive" method

Market share is normally

Market share is normally calculated by sales revenue divided by total market revenue, which is quite different to units sold - especially if one considers the iPhone's price tag. So if the iPhone costs 399 and Nokia's average cell phone around 130 (just a number I made up), then Nokia has to sell 3 times more units to gain the same market share. Kind of unfair, isn't it? ;)

Why go with "normally" when

Why go with "normally" when it takes only a minute to check the article, where you will find the comparison based on the number of unit sales.

One Day iphone will outsell the window mobile phones

According to the many survey on Latest Mobile Phones market iphone is getting popularity among the teenagers because these mobile are coming with advance features. So, one day iphones will be everywhere. So, its challenge before big fishes in the mobile industry like Nokia Mobile Phones , Motorola, Sony ericsson etc.

I Phone

i don't think that i-phone will lose it's market ..
i believe that i-phone will be more stronger than it's competitors of Mobile Phone market like 02,HTC,NOKIA,SONY ERICSSON,LG etc..
