Telecom New Zealand to carry iPhone 3?
According to their official Twitterer, Christchurch-based Telecom New Zealand is in negotiations with Apple to get the third generation iPhone (as opposed to iPhone 3G). Currently Vodafone is the only mobile company to carry the device on the island nation of 4 million potential customers.
BTW Telecom New Zealand, the first rule of getting the iPhone is that you don't talk about getting the iPhone.
Update: The New Zealand Herald has more:
Telecom is in negotiations to sell Apple's iPhone, says the telco's retail boss Alan Gourdie.
It announced the handset and plan line-up for its new high-speed 3G 'XT' network this morning, and Gourdie admitted that the iPhone may be in the pipeline for Telecom customers.
"We don't have the iPhone at launch," he said, "but we are in deep discussion with Apple."

Isn't that Richard Hammond?
Yep
What does Richard Hammond have to do with this story? Are they going match an iPhone up against a fighter plane and a Bugatti Veyron while in NZ?
What does Richard Hammond have to do with this story or iPhones? Are they going to race an iPhone vs a fighter plane vs a Bugatti Veyron while in NZ?
I was wondering the same thing lol Maybe he has been asking for an iPhone for a while??? But he can get one in England so I am confused. Either way Top Gear rocks!
Hammond is the face behind the campaign of the new 3G network (XT) being launched in New Zealand May 29.
No, Hammond is the face OF the campaign. The faces BEHIND the campaign all work in advertising and marketing, and you'll never, ever see them in an advert.
Well if that's all the news then I don't think it's much news. The only plus side is that maybe it will get Vodafone to put down the price of the iPhone 3G.
It will be a day when Satan ice-skates to work that I take any off my phone/mobile/Internet services back to Telecom!
There are only two mobile carriers in NZ: Telecom NZ and Vodafone. Vodafone's network is GSM/UMTS and until now TNZ's has been the same CDMA as used by Verizon and Sprint in the US. Vodafone has had the iPhone exclusively because it has the only network in NZ on which the iPhone will work.
However, TNZ is in the process of switching to UMTS 3G. This "XT" 3G network that TNZ are launching shortly is an 850MHz 3G UMTS network that the iPhone is compatible with. Hence TNZ will be able to offer the iPhone shortly.
What's that? That's the sound of someone getting fired in New Zealand.
If he didn't use so many ellipses, he could have typed out "you" instead of looking like an intellectually stunted LOLcat!
Couple of points: First, Telecom NZ is Auckland-based not Christchurch-based (though it does have staff in Christchurch).
Second, Alan's comment is probably referring to the current iPhone "3G" handset (compatible with Telecom's new network), not a third generation handset.
Telecom NZ actually has its headquarters in New Zealand's capital city, Wellington. Seehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecom_New_Zealand
Telecom NZ has previously announced that the current 3G iPhone (presently sold by Vodafone in New Zealand) *will* work on Telecom's new network. Sorry I can't find the link for this information, but it was previously published on the telecom.co.nz website in a 'FAQ' section relating to the new network.
Therefore it's highly likely that the tweet is referring to the upcoming, 3rd iteration of the iPhone (and not the existing 3G iPhone).
As correctly noted earlier, Richard Hammond (of Top Gear) is the public face of the Telecom XT Network. The boring Top Gear-inspired TV ads in New Zealand show him standing on a race track, holding a mobile phone, and stating that he loves high speed things, and "can't wait" to test the speed of Telecom's XT network.
Hammond is such a sellout.
No one in Telecom will be getting fired because of the twitter as TNZ have been making noises for a while about the iPhone 3G compatibility with the network. Vodafone has been the only carrier here to be able to offer the iPhone, and for the last few years has had the lions share of the NZ mobile market. Vodafone also threatened to take TNZ to court leading up to the proposed May 13th launch due to interference on their network caused by the new XT UMTS 850MHz TNZ network. Perception is largely now that Vodafone gave TNZ a marketing boost by threatening the action and the general feeling is that its a case of the big boy (Vodafone) throwing their toys out of the cot.The other poster is correct, Telecoms HQ (AKA Fortress Telecom) is based in Wellington. Top Gear is fairly popular here, so Hammond sellout or no is probably a good choice. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter who can or can't carry the iPhone, its the cost of the data rates that will be the big sell and so far TNZ has not released those although they have made noises that they will have a casual $1/Day with a 10MB (yes, MEGA not GIGA) cap.
Hey.
my thought is that apple are bringing out new iPhones, So what the point on bringing the olds one out before the new comes come out? also the new ones maybe locked.
all New Zealand phones are unlocked, I have an iphone and can put any SIM in it.
