More iPhone countries to be announced at March 6th event?
The timing seems right for more iPhone countries to be announced at the iPhone SDK event next week. Earlier we reported on Italy, Spain and Switzerland getting on board around the time of the SDK launch. Recent rumors have also included Rogers in Canada, O2 in Ireland and Tmobile in Austria and possibly in the Netherlands.
Update: Ireland (O2) and Austria (Tmobile) by extension are officially on.
Adding fuel to the fire, Morgan Stanley is reporting that El Jobso has been getting some serious private jet time in over the past quarter - indicating he's been doing some global traveling and possibly sealing some deals.
Interestingly, Tim Cook, COO of Apple, mentioned yesterday that Apple was open to exploring other models of iPhone distribution - rather than stick to their locked model. This could lead the way to selling the iPhone unlocked in markets like China and India where the device has already proved itself popular amongst the 2+ billion consumers in those countries - even with out 3G. He also mentiond the best way to fight unlockd iPhones is to opn up in the markets whre they are being unlocked.
It is turning out to be a very exciting week for th iPhone/iPod Touch platform...even without all of the new applications expectd to be announced.
Oh, and one last thing...it would be really nice to see Apple drop the prices on those iPhones and iPods right about now. The price reduction - which would reflect the plummeting prices of Flash storage would really spur on device sales.

Fuck yea... finally some good news wall street cant spin into overall negative news.
You Heard it here first.
Apple has a model that is going to be unlocked and sold only in apple/reseller stores, leaving out the middle man. This model has some features that exempt it from deals signed with earlier carriers. This will reassemble a move that apple Is known for doing to customers. AT&T jumped to the first phone, but over looked the horizon.
I swear I saw senior le steve at a private airport outside of beijing last week...
china here we come.
What is the source of the information you give about the release in the Netherlands?
Hi Guys,
Looks like it will be in Ireland, Italy and Austria!
I sincerely hope that the iPhone isnt going to T-Mobile, give Vodafone, PLEASE! I'm already with Vodafone for a good time so switching is not very good for me:(
Apple doesn't need your "pricing" recommendation. Everybody wants something "cheaper." Apple supplies a mobile phone that is more of a handheld computer. In my opinion, it is already CHEAP. Apple gives more hardware and software in its iPhone than any other company gives, and this includes the "designer" phones as well as the expensive, high-end Blackberries.
If you want something cheap, buy a Motorola RAZR!
Why not in Korea...? One of the most cellphone addict countries?
Apple is making a bad choice... they're missing a money chance... tsktsktsk
Is CDMA encoding that hard?
and thanks for lowering prices for iPods when i just bought the, dammit!
Koreans wouldn't buy iPhones at current price IMO. as impressive as iPhone is in US and other countries, how could it compete with cellphones that are 1/3 the size of iPhones yet with 10mp cameras and higher resolution video and mp3 capability?
plus employing CDMA into iPhone is a lot easier said than done. That's a completely different engineering.
Hahaha. That fanboy thing kills me. Anyway, Apple knows their pricing points. They have that down perfectly.
Don't see it being released in the Netherlands unless they come out with a new model. We don't have an EDGE network anymore.
o2 Irelands website confirms March 14th launch
8GB - €399
16GB - €499
much like the o2 UK deal it available at carphone whore house & o2 retail & online stores only
The Irish deployment will mirror that of the UK, where the iPhone is also carried by O2, and additionally sold by Carphone Warehouse. An 8GB model will be priced at €399, and the 16GB phone at €499. Fees will start at €45 per month under an 18-month contract; users will not however have access to unlimited data, the cap being set at 1GB for all plans. Similarly, Visual Voicemail is not being supported in the initial deployment, though it may arrive later.
Both of these changes will make the Irish iPhone distinct from that in any other country.
From O2's site for Ireland:
* Unused inclusive minutes and texts cannot be carried over to the following month. !!
** Data use in excess of the 1GB allowance will be charged at 2c per MB excluding roaming. !!!
*** Visual voicemail is not currently supported. !!!!!
I'm getting a Touch & sticking with Vodafone.
Irishman I have to agree with your sentiment, this is very disappointing, I have been twitching for the irish release of the iPhone ever since jobs revealed it. but I'm gonna wait for the visual voicemail, a 32GB model & may even wait for the 3G model to come out, but as for vodafone I'd rather put a gun to my head than be stuck with those money mongers LOL
It would be great to see the iPhone finally released in Canada, with a good data plan, I will sell my unlocked iPhone and get a legitimate one!!

The "Rogers in Canada" link has absolutely nothing to do with the iPhone coming to Canada... it merely talks about exorbitant data rates here! Maybe read the article before you link to it? C'mon 9to5.... you can do better!
Yeah! Rogers it the suck!

Canadians, don't get your hopes up. I highly doubt we'll be seeing an iPhone anytime soon...
The Irish are getting their iPhones through O2 with only 1GB of data included and no Visual Voice Mail. So they're not getting unlimited data... So the reason that people have been giving for iPhone not coming to Canada (because data plans are too expensive to be unlimitted) doesn't sound so valid anymore.
Let me suggest a reason why we're not getting the iPhone in Canada:
Rogers is the ONLY GSM carrier in Canada. Now, I didn't do much research, but I'm betting that in Ireland, O2 has other GSM competitors. In Canada, we have Rogers, and Fido, which is owned by Rogers. When Apple approached Rogers and said, "Hey, we've got a phone, but for you to have it on your network, we'll need you to pay us a nice chunk of the money you collect from your customers monthly."
Then Rogers said, "Haha. Yeah right. If you want in to Canada, you gotta come through us. If Canadians want to unlock iPhones and use it in Canada, they gotta use it through us. So we win no matter what. Why should we pay you?"
So you see? Until Apple divorces from the single carrier model and offer just plain unlocked iPhones like Tim Cook has suggested, we won't be seeing official iPhones in Canada...
Hope they'll be released in Holland soon. Gonna be hard without an active edge netwerk or a company dumb enough to invest in one though.
I cant believe they have a full press conference just for an SDK and some releases, can Steve fill an hour with just those 2 things?
Disappointed Canadian said

Unfortunately that doesn't make any sense. If Rogers is the only GSM carrier in Canada then what difference does it make if Apple changes from it's single carrier model? If they went to a multi-carrier who would they go with in Canada if there is only one company that uses GSM.
Anon, what I meant was: Once they decide to stop the single carrier model, they may choose to make their phones more expensive, but unlocked.
O2 ripping us off in the Republic of Ireland.
Whether you like the iPhone or not this is simply another case of being ripped off in Ireland. In every other country the iPhone has been released, they have had unlimited data plans also usually supported by an agreement for use of wi-fi hotspots such as AT&T's wi-fi spots in the US and O2's own wi-fi hotspots in the UK. In the UK iPhone subcribers also have access to cloud wi-fi network which is a nationwide wi-fi provider inclusive in their O2 tariff.
What is interesting here is that the iPhone is only available in the UK on O2 and in Ireland on O2. This gives us a direct comparison between pricing policies in the UK and Ireland via the same company, for example: high tariff UK is £75 (€105) Vs €100 in Ireland. In the UK you get 3000 minutes of calls but in Ireland you get 700 minutes. In UK you get 500 texts and in Ireland you get 250. In UK you get unlimited data and wi-fi (O2 hotspots and cloud) and in Ireland you get a 1GB limit, 2c for every additional 1MB and no deal with any wi-fi hotspots. And also in Ireland, additional calls are 20c per minute which is pretty high and additional texts are 10c per minute, also relatively high.
Even a tech-related article I read today states this:
"Fees will start at €45 per month under an 18-month contract; users will not however have access to unlimited data, the cap being set at 1GB for all plans. Similarly, Visual Voicemail is not being supported in the initial deployment, though it may arrive later. Both of these changes will make the Irish iPhone distinct from that in any other country."
Also, quoting the O2 website:
"Unused inclusive minutes and texts cannot be carried over to the following month." and
"*** Visual voicemail is not currently supported".
We are the only country so far with no unlimited data plan. O2 are also launching this product on St. Patrick's week March 14th. It is nice to know that O2 are sending us a happy Paddy's day gift by ripping us off.
I hope T-Mobile is not going to be the partner in the Netherlands, because I kind of dislike T-Mobile. I hope it will be KPN.
