Apple to allow downloads of movies and TV shows through the iPhone?
Apple appears to be ready to add videos and movies to the mobile iTunes store. AllthingsD caught a quick peak of the service (since disabled). Luckily an open Salon user got a few screengrabs of what's to come (below). While Movies would be kinda OK on an iPhone, they'd be very cool on a Mediapad/Tablet.
Will AT&T allow you to download episodes of Lost on your iPhone over 3G or will they take the same tac as Slingbox?
While the titles of soon to be available movies and TV shows were listed and directories broken down by genre are active...

the links to the actual movies turned up a message of "The item you’ve requested is not available." YET!
Upon even closer examination, if we look at the time line of the pictures from this morning it appears the pages in question are under construction as we speak. Notice, the navigation bar at the top of the page at 12:28 PM ET.
This navigation bar wasn’t there at 10:55 AM ET and 12:07 PM ET. (The Apple guys are out in Cupertino, CA. No worries, they aren’t working through lunch.)

Definately the downloads will be made through a WiFi connection but I think this could be a really great addition. Say you are on holiday and new film comes out you want to rent, just find a WiFi source and enjoy!
But what I don't get is how the TV Shows and Movies sections will be built into the iTunes Store. Will it just be an added category or which? The pictures don't explain that.
Also where have these pictures come from? A beta build?
What about movies from itunes in general for the rest of us? I am still waiting for movierental like Jobs promised loooong time ago. Im soooo disappointed.
Umm... You can already rent movies in iTunes... as well as buy them.
Not on your iPod/iPhone you can't...
Only in certain countries...not all Apple users are based in the US.
If you can't have Flash and have to pay for the content it will never Fly and will likely cause me to move to a new phone.
With Hulu & every major Television network offering their content the day after it airs for Free using Flash why would I want to give my money to Apple?
Get over it Apple and put Flash on the iPhone or it will fade away faster than Motorola with the RAZR.
It never had Flash and people haven't stopped buying the iPhone in droves so your argument is completely flawed. Yeah it would be nice but the iPhone does about a million things better than any other cell phone so I think I'll get by. Not too long ago we had to use pay phones to make phone calls too so stop crying.
I wasn't crying and if 3.0 doesn't meet the standards of todays smart phone I'll be switching phones.
It's that simple.
Where does the comment about pay phones come into play.
Using the same logic, WinMo, Palm & Rim have had cut and paste for years now. I don't, you don't.
3.0 is playing catch up and giving the iPhone which should have been on 2.0.
It's (by today's standards) a weak, under powered phone.
Apple said they would have background apps at the last iPhone release, guess they missed it by a couple versions of the iPhone since Gen 3 won't have it either with the exception of their own apps.
Just remember we used to only be allowed 1 3rd party app open at one time. Oh wait, that's still the case and WinMo, Palm & RIM have had it for years.
I could go on but it's getting tiresome.
Drink the Kool-Aid, I go for features and performance and am not loyal to any one vendor.
"I wasn't crying in my last post. But let me continue on about what it doesn't do"
WHAAAA
The iPhone doesn't sing me a lullaby to help me go to sleep so I'm switching it out. And it doesn't blend liquids or chop food!
Give me a break. You're exhausting. Just get a crappy cell phone with a plastic keyboard and a tiny screen that doesn't render webpages properly and be done with it already. Like I care!

"There is an app for that!"
well, before people start shouting and demanding all these bandwidth hogging applications, let's remind ourselves that the 3g technology itself provides limited throughput and breaks down under heavy use. that's not at&t's fault, it's the weakness and problem with WCDMA itself. of course at&t would rather limit usage for the time being than letting you bring down every part of their national mobile network. of course it's more of a problem in europe and now in asia too.
i know people are going to low-mark my comment, but let's just remind ourselves that these are bounded by the knowledge of human being and the laws of physics, not that "i want to xxx" then it will do xxx.
i want to have a gulstream.... can everyone possibly have one on earth? no...
The problem is that ATT wants to play up the iPhone like it's a computer and charge a lot of money for Unlimited data, but then they want to cap it off. That's not fair business. I don't mind them capping it or charging fair prices, but don't make us pay a ton and then say only certain types data can be transferred. "The iPhone is mini computer therefore we can't let people stream media..." But the iPhone plan I pay for is unlimited data, and if the iPhone is a "computer" like ATT says, why can't I tether for free?
If it is a mini computer, then why do you need to tether? I dont go around with my macbook and tether the connection to other laptops.
I think it makes sense in concert with the rumor that a 32GB iPhone is on the way. More storage space for movies and TV shows being larger in size.
Apple's becoming like M$. The only thing they care about is making more and more money.
Adding movie download service to a phone is only for making more money? Are you serious?
Do you have any idea you are talking about?
Why do you think Apple won't let Flash on the iPhone.
Hulu, Free Netfix downloads, every major network has Free Flash downloads.
So in Apple's case Yes, this is the case.
I can either watch it on Hulu or the network for free or pay Apple to download it and watch it.
Do the math & pay the Apple Tax.
If 3.0 doesn't ship with Flash my 2 year contract is up and I'm gone. Sell my 3G on ebay to help pay for my new phone that I have the choice of software I want to put on it.
NOT WHAT APPLE TELLS ME TO.
LAST NOTE: APPLE WILL HAVE TO REWRITE IT'S ENTIRE MOBILE OSX TO ALLOW FOR ALL BACKGROUND APPS. It was written poorly from day one with the memory leaks and poor performance.
Cry me river, you PIA.
Waaaaa no flash
waaaaaa no backgrounding
God forbid you have pay for content like TV Shows or Movies. Those "rich" people should just make entertainment for you, for free shouldn't they?
After all, you deserve! Being such a winner and all...
What would you call the Music Store? A cash revenue? No it's not because the record labels have a monopoly on their music on the itunes store in many cases if Apple bought music from Amazon they would make more money than if they bought it from the record labels. Apple is only making millions of dollars from the iTunes store, which might seem like a lot but not to a big corporation due to the cost of running. Adding videos to the Mobile Store is for ease of access. Sites like Hulu only give you the right to watch the video, and WITH commercials. On contrary if you buy the video from any movie distributor you BUY the right to own the movie. I see a big difference. Yeah we all want flash blah, blah, blah, honestly? I've been doing great without it. It must be the other pros the iPhone has the App Store, the best music interface on ANY phone (I mean the iPod[if it wasn't for this I might have switched to the G1), the best video output on any phone period. And if you REALLY want flash due like the rest of the people who want more out of a restricted product (LIKE ME!!), and JAILBREAK!
How about audiobooks?? I think that would be alot cooler. I still don't understand why the iPhone or the Kindle don't provide this feature. I believe it would make either product a real must have for the audiobook crowd.
So getting this thread back on track, What's up with:
"Friends"
"Mentions"
"Messages"
Is this Apple slowly and carefully entering a social media space??
Any thoughts people?
That's a screenshot from the Twitter App TwitterFon. It has nothing to do with Apple.
Apple is "surviving" the economic downturn thanks to sales outside the US. Now, if they only would realize that, in order to keep growing outside the US, they have to provide some content...
Content in iTunes (TV shows and Movies) will help them boost sales of Apple computers and devices, particularly given the fact that no competition exists in most of the countries. No Hulu, no Amazon, nothing.. (not even iTunes).
I think they should focus on that, before allowing people to download movies and tv shows to a 3.5" screen of their iPhone (a thing which can be done converting already bought material in iTunes I guess).
If Apple wants to continue growing in these harsh economic times they have to:
- improve and update PRO apps (Aperture and Final Cut come to mind)
- deliver content on iTunes worldwide (after all the iPhone has been successfull also because the App Store is available worldwide)
I am not interested in the iPhone gaining another feature which I won't be able to use in my country.
I'd rather have GPS with turn-by-turn directions and downloadable maps (so that it can be useful also when travelling abroad), a better Mail management (similar to Mail.app where the inbox shows ALL incoming messages not just the ones of one account), a higher resolution screen (not to have smaller icons, but better text rendering), some writing applications, iWeb capabilities to upload my website on the go (heck, I would even pay separately for such an app, or have it as part of iLife '10 together with iPhoto for iPhone and GarageBand for iPhone in the same DVD).
I understand, despite what some people tell, that Apple isn't just breaking-even on content delivery, but I don't understand why they don't feel the urge to deliver content in many more countries, particularly where, as said, competition is inexistant.
The advantage of Apple, the thing they realized before anybody else, is that content drives sales nowadays (software and content). They realized it before Sony (a media jaggernaut which sat on their phisical prorietary delivery methods (UMD, MiniDisc, MemoryStick, and on and on) and LONG before Microsoft.
These were my two cents.
Am I the only one that sees things that way?
