Wow, this is a hilarious attack on Apple's wireless provider, AT&T. If they can get through, AT&T are probably on the phone with their lawyers right now.
Great move by Verizon! They attack AT&T while pushing the Droid! If Verizon gets only 10% of its customers to buy the Droid they will out sell the iPhone.
They are pretty careful in the ads - they attack the network, not the phone. In fact, they say some nice things about the apps being available on the iphone (first ad). You might say they are ready for to sell the iphone with a better network - should they get the chance.
Yep, I think that attacking the phone itself (DROID Does ads) isn't very smart, especially if they ever want to do business with Apple, but attacking AT&T like this seems like the perfect angle.
Weak copy of essentially the same ads that MTS was running last Christmas, but still makes a good point.
It's the same deal with Rogers here in Canada. They have virtually no coverage outside of major cities. Even Telus/Bell's new iPhone coverage is going to be severely limited compared to the rest of their available network with other phones for at least the next year.
luckily the german exclusive iphone-partner (t-mobile) has the best 3G network here - otherwise i wouldn't have bought an iphone - so i guess verizon is hitting apple where it hurts ...
Yes Verizion may have the best 3G coverage but its also using older technology to get that piggy backing off of the CDMA network. CDMA had better range over distance that the newer 3G coverage but was slower in terms of data.
The iPhone was designed for the fastest internet. This is the reason why Apple chose AT&T. Their network uses the newer 3G standard the same as the rest of the wold.
I like how people tend to forget that the main reason why Apple has not switched to Verizon or Sprint is due to these networks not being compatible with the actual phone. Otherwise it wouldn't have been an issue.
The iPhone went to AT&T in 2007 without 3G capability so that arguement is nonsense. Further weakened by the fact that they wanted to go with Verizon at first. Cingular was their second choice before it bought AT&T.
And the main reason the iPhone is neither on Verizon nor Sprint and T-Mobile is because it is currently under an exclusivity contract in the US, which will expire in June. It has nothing to do with compatibility, as the iPhone is perfectly compatible with the T-Mobile at the moment, yet it isn't available there. It will cost pennies for Apple to add a CDMA chip in there and they will gain further marketshare. It would be business suicide to continue AT&T exclusivity beyond 2010.
iPhone is not "perfectly" compatible with T-Mobile; T-Mobile's 3G network is not compatible with the iPhone's hardware. On T-Mobile, you get voice and EDGE only, even with the 3G and 3G[s] models.

If none of the 3 other major carriers are compatible fully with the iPhone and Apple is unwilling to swap a radio then that means no iPhone on Verizon, Sprint or T-Mobile, ever. That's nonsense.
Bringing up the switch to LTE is also ridiculous. By the time LTE is FULLY implemented across the country and CDMA declared totally dead, it will be a decade if not more. Apple will not be so stupid as to wait that long to tap into the rest of the market. The splintered US market is a reality that all cell phone manufacturers deal with and will continue to deal with until uniformity in technology occurrs--Apple will deal with it like the rest: making a CDMA version and a GSM version.
All I was addressing was the inaccurate statement that the current iPhone is perfectly compatible with T-Mobile. It's not if you're talking about 3G. The whole point of the "there's a map for that" ad campaign is 3G coverage, so 3G is the issue here.
At any rate, if Apple sees a profitable enough market in putting out CDMA or T-Mobile, they will, assuming no contractual prohibitions to doing so.
The big question is will they really make a new model iPhone for just CDMA? The new dual chipset is an option but as the guy above stated one reason why the AT&T has the network it does and why apple is still on it (although G1 iPhone was Edge you know they were already thinking about a 3G version) is because its a 3G standard used in more outlets around the world.

Only coked out Apple users defend AT&T. I've been a diehard Apple user since birth, AND through the 90s, and the iPhone network is just HORRID. Quite frankly, I'm not sure there is a word powerful enough to describe how horrible AT&T is.
When will people acknowledge that WHERE you use the phone that determines the quality of the service? I've never had problems with AT&T, but I happen to live in a heavily covered area. People that claim AT&T is horrible everywhere/amazing everywhere are full of it. There are weak areas for all networks, and AT&T just has a lot more of them. Just because you have problems with it doesn't mean we all do.
Not that I favor/dislike AT&T, But the EXACT same thing would have happened to Verizon if they had launched the iPhone. Unfortunately, the US is lightyears behind most European and Asian Cellular Networks. Thus NO US carrier was ready for the overwhelming onslaught of iPhone customers (ESPECIALLY with their HEAVY use/dependance of data ... when compared to BB and WMobile users!!!)

Apple choose AT&T because AT&T gave them what they wanted - a fat kickback on hardware sales along with general control over what goes on the phones. Had Verizon not been the control freaks they are over non-BB and non-Windows phones, the iPhone would have went to Verizon. However, Verizon wanted too much say as to what apps could and couldn't go on the phone, and Apple wasn't having that. Paired with T-Mobile's lack of 2G/3G data strategy at the time and Sprint's continued suckage, AT&T was the only nationwide provider that provided the best fit for Apple's strategy.
I love this, but seriously..........iPhone envy! Verizon would kill for the iPhone. This is why I would be surprised if Apple allowed Verizon to be apart of their ecosystem! If I were Apple, I'd say fuck Verizon!
And how old are you? These ads get at ATTs network, not the iPhone. It doesn't make sense from a biz standpoint for Apple not to get in bed with other U.S. telcom carriers with their iPhone. If anything, these ads just set up VZW when they get the iPhone to say how much better the iPhone actually is now, that it's actually on a great network.
