MacBidouille, an excellent French-language Macintosh site, has posted what they say is a leaked advertisement for the Tmobile iPhone in Germany. Of note, the specs indicate 3G speeds and a 16GB capacity. These specs are in line with our reports from August from our Orange (France Telecom) sources. They also stated that the Germans and British would get the iPhones slightly before the French were ready to roll it out.
While this image could easily be a fake (they at one point call it an iPod in the advertisement), the specs are likely to be realistic as the next iteration of iPhone will likely match the iPodtouch's 16GB capacity. Additionally, with 3G phones all but ubiquitous in Europe, it would be an embarrassment for Apple to release a EDGE-only phone. The price point also make sense when one takes into account the Euro/Dollar exchange rate and the absurd VAT Tax rates that add close to 20% of the cost... There has still been no mention of possible GPS capability.
We are still looking for an announcement at Apple Expo in Paris in late September to give European consumers some lead time in preparing to switch mobile carriers and make a fairly large purchase. Even if agreements have been reached (and reported on by the Financial Times) the carriers will likely be forced to leave the announcement to Apple.

If this pricing is reflected in the UK, then it just won't catch on mass market. In the UK the highest spec phone available (eg N95/P1i) is free with £30/£35 per month + 18 month contract, if apple charge £300+ for the handest £30+ rental + 24 month contract it will be too much to swallow in one go. It will be intersting to see how subsidised the iPhone will be - if its not subsidised then at that price the only way they are going to sell it is sim free.

right. so right. 499 € is way too much. if you'd buy a cell phone for 499 € in germany, you would expect that it's not sim-locked.

Speaking about the N95, it is now free yes, but when it was new it certainly wasn't. on an £85 a month contract it was free yes, but at the £35 contract you had to pay! and it was about £250 on £35 p/mo. not free. and £85 ($170 approx) is a lil' high.

Apple are asking the UK public to break a habit of about the last 10-15 years in asking to pay £300+ for a handset & 24 month contract. I work in the largest mobile retailer in the uk & I can honestly say that this sort of pricing will appeal to less than 1% of the people we see in a year. It is a simple rule in the UK, if you are a big user then your handset will always be free, if you want a high end handset then you pay upto £400+ but it is without contract & sim free.
Additionally we have rebate schemes throughout the UK, so in many cases you get a large portion of your monthly rental given back to you over the contract period - so the overall cost is much much cheaper than £30/£40 per month.
We all want the iphone but how are Apple going to convince people to pay such as high price & long contract? Today i have seen the ipod touch 16gb for £250 (£20 cheaper than apple mrp), a sim free iphone can't be more than £350.
