iPhone becoming the most popular camera on Flickr

The iPhone awhile back became the most popular camera phone on Flickr, beating out even rivals with 5 Megapixel cameras.   It is now far and away the leader. (sure you can combine all of the Nokia phones and have a much closer race - but stick with us here)

Today CNet shows that it is quickly becoming one of the most popular cameras overall.  Quite a big acomplishment for the 2 megapixel, flashless, zoomless device. Next month, the iPhone should only be behind the Canon Rebel XTi - which will only be heading south in favor of Canon's new, upgraded XS, XSi lines.

There is something to be said for having a great interface and an app environment that let's you easily integrate your content with other services.  It also doesn't hurt to have only one product instead of 40 like Nokia or in the camera category, Canon.

Longtime Flickr users are probably getting an appreciation for how the chefs of Paris feel about the proliferation of McDonalds there...

It also would be nice to take into account the number of devices out there.

One thing is "5 million photo uploaders from 12 million iPhones" and quite other "5 million uploaders from 500 millons Nokia's phones"

No surprise that the iPhone is so popular as a camera. Aside from it being drop-dead easy to email a photo, the camera is really quite good. Yes, it has a low megapixel count, and there is no flash, but the contrast capabilities are fantastic, and it works very well in low-light situations.

I'd love to show you the great scenes it captured around the Roc Center tree at night!

When I take photos with my 8 megapixel point-and-shoot, it is many steps to import it into my computer, reduce it to a reasonable size, and then email it. Spontaneity is the name of the game for a phone.

How is this possible? The iPhone only has a cheezy 2MP camera compared to those Nokias bristling with 5MP sharpshooters. Everyone knows that pixel count is all that matters.

One reason could be is that there are a few more iPhones being sold than Nokia N95s or that iPhone users have more time on their hands than other handset users.

It's the ease of use, of course!

Well, I keep sort of a photo diary there, with snapshots from my iphone, often via the "Photo Bag" app where I can easily give them a Holga og Lomo or B&W look. I find the app saves bad snapshots and give them an interesting look. Then I load the picture into the "Flickup" app, tag it and upload it. It's so easy to do it, just a little tapping on the iPhone, and there you are.

It's easier than anything else I've tried. That's why the iPhone is in the front here. Simplicity. But the camera really could be much, much better ... I keep a tiny Leica C-lux 2 in my bag all the time, but although it takes much better pictures and I use it constantly, I seldom bother to upload snapshots taken with it - it's a bit more work, I need to go home first, and there's no gps data, or time stamp as in the flickup app.

So, in short, it's the usability, dude!

the only reason will probably be that it just dead-easy to upload a picture from your iphone. i mean, the quality is rubbish compared to sony ericsson or nokia handsets.. 2 mpx is not that bad, but the absence of the flash makes it so hard to capture something that is not blurry.
