iPhone 3.1 update disables free tethering, some Exchange connectivity

As we warned before 3.1 came out, the latest iPhone update disables the tethering hack that so many of you enjoy using.  That in itself is reason enough hold off on updating.

However, today TUAW publishes some more discouraging news.  After the 3.1 update, non-iPhone 3GS users (touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G) won't be able to access Exchange servers for their Email, Contacts and Calendar if the Exchange connection has been set by their administrators with a forced device encryption connection.  Only iPhone 3GS devices now work in this mode.  Apple has said it improperly set up encryption on iPhone OS 3.0 which wasn't really encrypting the Exchange information.

Luckily, the Gmail Calendar and Contacts sync that uses Microsoft's ActiveSync API (to act like an Exchange Server) is not affected.

We're hanging back on this update a bit.

3.1 offers much better support for 802.1X networks (automatic log-on actually works)... that was my biggest gripe and now it is fixed.

Yeah, I'm not installing that. I need my tethering. It's bailed me out too many times to give it up now.

among other things for all jailbreakers out there once you update to 3.1 you can never go back (3G[S] only) because apple is no longer signing 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware.

ever since i updated to 3.1 my iphone 3gs has been loosing its signal left and right and its starting to piss me off
anybody else have this problem?

Yes same here the Outgoing calls breaking up other end, when I use wifi skype from same location its ok. called O2 who said to try 2g but still the same problem. only since upgrade ? to 3.1. going to try a restore later.

Why the hell would I update? To lose Tethering? Hells No! I'll pass....thanks apple.

I'll never update, 3.1 is a *&^%ing joke

Tethering hack still works for me on O2.

I want to update but don't want to loose tethering. Can somone confirm that 3.1 (not 3.01) tethering still works on O2. Thanks!!!

Hi mate,
bad luck, i upgraded to 3.1 and free tethering stopped working on my iphone 3G. Does any one have a solution, please let me knw to get bak tethering.
Thnx

i am having same problem with you, if you have the solution, please teach me how to get the internet thetering again, coz i oredy restore my iphone, its not work. thx

I live in Vienna Austria. I upgraded to 3.1 and still has a functioning Tethering under Setting→General→Network

Living in Vienna, too, but I'm using an officially unlocked iPhone 3G, and with 3.1 I'm not able to use tethering anymore. As I'm a beta tester I issued this as a bug to Apple, with the response that this is a wanted behavior. Which provider are you on? If it's Orange or T-Mobile then it's clear that you still have it.

I am on T-Mobile and tethering is working; I think for those whose who don't have it must has been disabled by the service provider i.e AT&T

I updated to 3.1 yesterday and the tethering hack still seems to be in place (I haven't tried using it though) on my iPhone 3G, it just won't find any WiFi networks now! I'd be happy to swap tethering for wifi if anybody want's to swap??

I'm with AT&T I upgraded to 3.1 tried to use tethering and the option to turn it on poofed

Updated to 3.1 with my 3GS, and i still have the possibility of internet tethering...

How

Both my husband and I have iphones. I use tethering he does not. I enabled tethering on his iphone before I updated. After the update, the tethering option was STILL there. It turned it on, my PC recognized the iPhone ethernet adapter, the suddenly the iphone screen flashed, the tethering option was gone and the connection to the iphone ethernet adapter dropped. I cannot get the setting back. Therefore I'm holding off updating my iphone until there is a tethering solution since I use it for emergency support for work when I can't get WiFi access with my laptop.

I updated my firmware yesterday. At first, I noticed tethering was still in the settings menu... Once I connected the phone to my laptop, it disappeared!!!!

I regret updating!

Lost my tethering and am dropping calls left and right in areas where I previously had really good coverage~!

Hope someone can hack a new tethering for 3.1 QUICKKK

Updated to 3.1 yesterday and tethering disappeared after I tried to use it via usb. Please, we need new hack.

All this is people making money and the progression of society coming to a slow. I think if infrastructures will not be replaced i.e. phone and cable companies from the out dated equipment cellular companies should not hold back on availability of options and the industry should be treated as a utility by the government and should have money allocated to improve it. what im trying to say is the country is fill with money hungry F&#%@ that need a kick in the balls otherwise they will be working for a dollar and hour for some other country in short order

For those of you that think the iPhone tethering hack still works in 3.1. You may find that your visual voicemail is not.
The BenM tethering hack may have carried over after you updated you iPhone to 3.1 but it cripples visual voicemail. Who knows what else it messes up.

Is there any way to get rid of the benm hack to get visual voicemail back?

you have to restore to factory while connected to itunes. I have tried all hacks out there, that is the only way to VVM back.

I restored to factory while connected to itunes, but am still not able to get the VVM back. Any suggestions?

Here in Canada after the 3.2 OS update on my iPhone 3G I have been able to get Internet tethering working again after, repairing the device with my laptop, and update the devices Services like in this screenshot

Hi SammyQc,

you seem to refer to a version of the iPhone OS that doesn't seem to be available yet: did you get it through iTunes updates - and it is for some reason only available in Canada - or what else?

I ask because I have lost tethering, in Italy, and I need it asap, so I would try to install it from anywhere, if it works for tethering.

BTW, weird thing is that I have read that people with other carriers (such as Vodafone) who until now did not have tethering now finally have it thanks to OS 3.1.

Yah my bad, I mean 3.1 of course :)
thanks for pointing that out!
