iPod Observer catches wind of one of them new iPhones (Updated)

The iPod Observer (via MacBlogz) just posted what they believe to be the next model of iPhone's back side.  They point out that the number on the back is a model number that doesn't currently exist and that it looks like a metallic black instead of the current plastic.  Obviously this wouldn't be rocket science to Photoshop either.  We'll believe it when we see it.

Updated: Macrumors has the following images which appear to be from the same series.  It is getting a bit more realer.

Oh, and why not make it 32GB while you are at it?

They're definitely not going back to the metal back. It interfered too much with reception.

My V1 with the aluminum back seems to get better reception then most of my friends 3g's do when we are in the same spots.

Of course I am not sure what a metal back would do to the 3g antenna though. But it seems that there have been more lawsuits and complaints about the 3g reception then the V1's. (This could also be AT&T)

I don't know if it's metallic but I just luuuv the brush aspect, so much better for scratches...

Its probably fake there doesn't appear to be a speaker on the bottom.

um, from what I can see there are two slots for the tiny speaker and mic.

if you follow along with what apple has done with the ipod line this fits. they have a habit of flipping between plastic and metal enclosures. the nano G1 was plastic top/aluminum bottom hybrid. then G2 went back to the previously used mini design and went with the all around aluminum enclosure. maybe they are looking to have matching halves in order to have an a similar all around look. iphone started with a shiny aluminum back, then plastic, now a colored matte aluminum would fit.

This looks like the black plastic used on the unibody macbooks around the screen hinge and under the bottom cover eject button. It feels svelt to the touch and if the back of a new iPhone were to be made of this I would be very happy.

.....fake!

I believe it is fake.
I can't taell you wahy cos it's jsut a feeling but I don't believe this is going to be the back of the new iPhone.

right...there we go it's fake

nice work dick nose

Well, to me this looks like a rubber-like plastic surface, not metal. Also, the inside shot indicates this. This seems like the way to go. You won’t have the smudges but keep the better reception…

Yeah I think it looks like the Zune 30 material, which was great ! Very resistant and scratchproof !

Remeber the prototype MacBook Air that was sold on eBay? It had the exact same matte-black aluminum underside. They chose not to use it on the Air, but are bringing it back for the iPhone. I also believe that the next generation iPhone will be aluminum so that the iPhone can be on Apples Green Check List

This is more than likely real. The mac observer were the first ones to show the iPhone 3g back. This is likely from the same source. The mac observer rarely if ever goes into rumor mongering unless they're convinced it's real. Also I love the new back. Looks like it is matte aluminum. Goodbye invisible shield!

So, from the looks of this new shell, the 3rd Gen iPhone will bear no flash for the camera still...this sucks ass.

I would love it if they came out with two versions, black brushed AL and Just brushed AL. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH I can't wait.

THIS ISNT A METAL BACK! I TOTALY LOOKS LIKE PLASTIK

that this could be a prototype just like the Air, ans that it might be aluminum just lie the new Macbooks. We will have to wait and see!

Matte finished plastic has been around quite a while, also in cell phones (SonyEricsson k800i comes to mind and other SonyEricsson phones had the same finish).

It makes sense to have a matte plastic back as it is less a "fingerprint magnet" and small scratches are much less visible. What I miss though is that this piece of plastic looks 99.9% the same as the current plastic cover for the 3G iPhone...

I don't own an iphone, but there are plenty of phones that have been released with a "metal" backing or casing that get great reception. At least two of those phones would be the LG VX8700 and also the BB Storm. I'd like to see a version of the iphone FINALLY come to VZW though. Hope this could be it, but who knows?

looks like sexy unibody, doesn't it?!

so...

1. if there is a strategy to introduce multiple iPhone models, including a "Pro", it would make sense to take the current 3G, and cheapen it up a little, maybe by making the back matte plastic.

2. this is a PLASTIC back

3. Apple will not introduce an all-metal case, as it will impede signal reception, of not just the cellular signal, but also WiFi. Hence why the Touch has a small plastic gap in the back of its case. They could make a metal-look plastic case, but that is NOT Apple's style. So if a "Pro" model does surface, look for shiny plastic, or some other creative way to get the signals through.

4. A cheaper, durable phone will play well in emerging markets (e.g. India, etc.). If the back is as durable as the front, they've got a winner in my book.

5. :P
