The Washington Post is reporting that TMobile will carry the iPhone in Germany on November 1st. This is big news for a couple of reasons.
It means that Apple is probably going with the "National Carriers" AT&T in the US (used to be a monopoly), Tmobile is Deutsche Telekom - the former government telecom. So from this we can likely assume that Vodafone (or more likely O2) in the UK and Orange in France will also be exclusive iPhone carriers
The European release will be a 3G iPhone. Why? There is no EDGE in Europe. Apple can't release a slower phone in Europe that only does GPRS than the current model. This also means that Apple will probably release a 3G iPhone in the US rather than have a "better" version floating around Europe.
By then, the iPhone could also include GPS, better camera(s) and other hardware goodies. The iPhone software suite will probably be rounded out at that point with iChat client (VOIP?), VLC client, simple image editing, etc.
This will be the true iPhone 1.0. Though the current version isn't so bad.

There is no EDGE in Europe?
There is no EDGE in Europe? At least in Finland and Germany almost every city has EDGE coverage as well as UMTS/HSDPA. But for example in Finland it is not allowed to sell operator locked phones without 3G (UMTS/HSDPA) capability, and overall 3G is more widely used than 2.5G EDGE network.

"There is no EDGE in
"There is no EDGE in Europe"
This not true. In France, there is far more edge than 3G, so it is in Germany:
This is a map for Orange in France : http://couverture-reseau.orange.fr/france/netenmap.php
And for T-Mobile in Germany : http://www.t-mobile.de/funkversorgung/inland
But i can tell you that a lot of people want a 3G device here and say they will wait an iPhone 2.0 if the first here stay with edge support only
For iChat, VLC (why vlc as they have quicktime), GPS, ... i think you're just dreaming, but i like your dream ;)

Vodaphone in the UK?
I sincerely hope not. As far as I am aware in the UK our law wouldn't allow it. I've no wish to leave Orange, so in theory I could get a vodaphone iphone and switch accounts to Orange and retain the number etc.
Or maybe O2
The register says it's gonna be o2

edge in the uk
everyone says that o2 is getting it in the uk. Well the only two uk networks to use edge are ORANGE and T-MOBILE this would seemingly prove the o2 theory wrong ? no ? I have also seen an interview with steve jobs saying why they opted not to use 3g in the iphone, so it would seem a little odd if he suddelny changed this
Here in australia almost all
Here in australia almost all my friends are waiting for an iPhone. Now the RAZR craze is over people here are desperate for a new phone and everyone loves the iPhone. Unfortunatly our national carier is Telstra (The only network here with EDGE) and have spoken out against the iPhone:
