3G iPhone reviewed, nothing learned

NYTimes (Pogue), WSJ (Mossberg) and USAToday (Baig) all got their mitts on the 3G iPhone.   Amazingly, not one of them had anything original to say.  Nothing you couldn't make up by looking at the specs or images of the iPhone and postulate.  Just FYI, we'd have had those screws off and been digging around the guts within 30 seconds of recieving the device...but maybe thats why we have to wait like all of you schmucks too.

Baig's insights:

Doesn't work with Firewire docs.  Audio Quality better for calls and songs through speaker.  Geotagging pictures is cool.  GPS functionality works better - but could have driving instructions.  Back is "curvier"

Pogue:3G means that you can talk on the iPhone and surf the Internet simultaneously, which you couldn’t do before.  According to Apple, the iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example.  One coming program, called iCall, will give you free phone calls when you’re in a Wi-Fi hot spot. Another, called G-Park, exploits G.P.S. to help you find where you parked. Yet another, Urbanspoon, is “a cross between a magic eight ball and a slot machine:" you shake the phone, and it randomly displays the name of a good restaurant nearby, using the iPhone’s G.P.S. and motion sensor.

...and grandmaster funk WSJ Mossberg: iPhone 3G’s battery was drained much more quickly in a typical day of use than the battery on the original iPhone, due to the higher power demands of 3G networks....Also, in the U.S. and in many other countries, the iPhone is still tied to a single exclusive carrier, whose coverage or rate plans may be unacceptable to some....One drawback: While you can have both personal and Exchange email accounts on the new iPhone, if you synchronize with Exchange calendars and contacts, your personal calendar and contacts are erased.....One side benefit to 3G is that in some areas, voice coverage improves. At my neighborhood shopping center, where the first iPhone got little or no AT&T service, the iPhone 3G registered strong coverage. But I still found that calls regularly broke up on some major streets. In New York City, riding in a taxi along the Hudson, one important call was dropped three times on the new iPhone. Finally, I borrowed a cheap Verizon phone and got perfect reception.....Bottom line: If you’ve been waiting to buy an iPhone until it dropped in price, or ran on faster cell networks, you might want to take the plunge, if you can live with the higher service costs and the weaker battery life.

Our Take: 3G+GPS>battery+Service price=buy.  Biggest dissapointment: Camera.

it should be "cool"

Am I missing something?

Am I missing something? Everyone is saying the battery is worse, but from my understanding the reason it doesn't last as long is because of the 3G network, but really, if you turned off 3G which you can do, shouldn't the battery actually last longer than the current iPhone? Now obviously you wouldn't have the advantages of 3G, but from my limited understanding, there isn't a huge difference in voice talk between 2.5G and 3G (assuming good coverage). So wouldn't it be possible to keep the phone on 2.5G for the most part, and only enable 3G when using the internet or in an area with poor coverage?

The iphone should only be

The iphone should only be enabling 3g when you make a connection.. of course if you have push enabled it'll need a constant connection so that doesn't help.

Personally I'd kill wifi (which is a battery hog) and leave 3g, as there's almost no wifi around here and ubiquitous 3g... depends on where you live.

To save battery...

There is a dramatic difference in battery life between 2G and 3G modes on any 3G capable phone. There is no difference in sound quality between the networks so I would disable 3G except when browsing the web. Otherwise it is just consuming the battery even when the phone is idle for no added value.

The weak battery is very

The weak battery is very worrying, this might be a deal breaker for many! (Im use to charging my phone every 4-5 days, will defnitly be a problem if the iphone does not even last a full day!)

iPhone Charging

This won't affect me much. I'm used to charging my iPhone every day. By the end of a typical day, I have pretty much used and abused my iPhone. I use it constantly for text messaging, emailing, calls, and internet. The 3G iPhone will not be a huge change for me in terms of my charging habits, I'm sure.

Ponderous

Well Walt pretty much said it all, Same phone less battery life and his biggest concern like most who are pondering buying one.....AT&T making you take out a second mortgage. In the many threads i've read alot of people are not going to buy it for that reason. Not only is the bill ridiculous but NO TEXT MESSAGES!! that is retard in a bucket. I'd love to own one but i don't want to have to sell my future born kids to AT&T....UGHHH which brings the question if the 8 gb is $199 and he 16GB $299 why are the ipod touches still $299,$399, and $499? They do alot less shouldn't their price drop as well by $100.? Anyway that's just me talking.

My guess is because the new iPhone is subsidized. In other words, AT$T is paying for part of the price of the phone. The UN-subsidized prices for the new iPhone are $599 for the 8GB and $699 for the 16GB, which IS still more expensive than the Touch.

399 for 8gb and 499 16gb those prices you speak of above are the non commit price that i dont think have been released offically by att yet...... could be wrong.

iphone 3g backup battery

Sure the battery on iPhone 3G is not that great, but what can we do? We want small size phones, powerful features and lengthy battery life.

Just get a backup battery. I got mine from iPhoneck brands. Their new 3G backup battery is probably one of the better looking products in the market. Their website is www.iphoneck.com
