Next iPhone to have 3.2 megapixel camera? 5 megapixel device on the way?
Sometimes-reliable Digitimes is reporting that Apple will have a 3.2 Megapixel camera sensor on its next iPhone. The brief report states:
OmniVision has received 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple's next-generation iPhone, according to market sources. The company is also said to have secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.
OmniVision beat out STMicroelectronics and Aptina Imaging for the Apple orders, the sources added.
One of the bigger complaints about the current iPhones is the camera's low-megapixel output. While the picture quality is amazing for 2.1 megapixels, there is certainly room for improvement (yes, there are many other factors contributing to the quality of a picture besides megapixels).
This would put the iPhone (again) on par with the soon to be released Palm Pre.
And what is with the 5 megapixel camera? Is it us or does that have "tablet thingy" written all over it?
iPhone 3.0 is also expected to bring video recording capabilities to the next iPhone.
Yes, we know that jailbroken iPhones have had video for decades now.

3.2MP just doesn't cut it, 2MP was already so out of date when it launched almost 2 years ago that they need to come in firing with at least a 5MP to make the camera a selling point...
U R a total IDIOT. Read below dumba**.
The phone should be at least 5 Megapixel. And there needs to be a way to reduce resolution to ease demand on network or MMS. I can see a user choice when you send a picture.
A bigger glass lens would make a huge difference. The difference between 2 MP and 5 MP is irrelevant if a tiny lens is still in use. It will make the phone thicker and more damage-prone, but it'd be well worth it.
How about we have one side a full touch screen and the other side a full camera lens, that way we get the best of both worlds!
Why does it need a 5MP sensor in it? It's a PHONE!!! Do you even realize that they could stick a 30MP sensor in it, but with the lens being so small, it's pointless!!
It's not a DSLR that you take high resolution pictures with. Why can't people understand this?
Amen!
THANK YOU !!! People can't understand this, and plus the iPhone actually takes great picturesfor a phone, and it doesn't fart higher than its ass, because I've seen many Samsungs that took 5-or-more megapixels pictures that were actually very BAD !
It is not a phone. it is tiny mobile computer pretending to be a phone and marketed as a phone.
Shhhhh! Nobody is supposed to know that.
Yes, it's a phone but imagine this scenario.
If have you been to any concert lately than you would have seen hundreds of hands in the air, ridiculously trying to capture any moment on the stage and all you can bring inside is a phone, no cameras allowed.
If you think about it, this happens a lot.
I bet you can think of similar situations easily.
A descent lens and MP would be a great selling point here.
Not to mention all those fun camera applications already written for iPhone that would benefit so much from improved situation.
I own two analogue, four digital cameras and a HDV camcorder, and still come to a situation where I can't capture something I would like.
But, its only me.
As has been alluded to, the iPhone's 2 megapixel camera is better than most other phone cameras with higher resolution!
OK...I have a big secret to tell. My sources say that the 3.2 mp camera is a front facing camera on the iPhone. This is for mobile iChat (for video chatting). The 5 mp camera is for the back of the iPhone. This is for taking pictures and 640 x 480 VGA video. That IS what they are. :)
Liar! Stop teasing! :(
Is that 5mp CIS supposed to be for higher end model of IPHONE??? think its too weird to be included in any other product mailnly the TABLETy one
I'm getting tired of people bringing up the jailbroken video apps as if they actually worked well. I quickpwnd my 3g expressly for video recording, and what did I find?
6fps? check. Horrible tearing and wobbling? check. Near zero indoor or low light usability? check. Crash while taking or starting video? check. Lower quality overall than a 2005 feature-phone's video? check.
I guess if that's what you're after fone, but my results were so bad I ditched the jailbreak and went legit again.
I cannot believe that people have the audacity to claim that the 2 MP camera in iPhone is on par with others on the market. I have had 3.2 MP and 5 MP Sony Ericssons and Nokias (e.g. Nokia N95 8GB). If the phone is made right with the camera, that DEFINITELY a larger MP translates to better pictures. My old Nokia N95 8GB (5 MP, Carl Zeiss optics) took pictures indoors, outdoors, and night photos to the extent that people could NOT tell the difference between it and my Sony Cybershot 7.2 MP digital camera. I have seen iPhone pictures and think they are insanely bad. I for one and happy that Apple (who is promoting the multimedia functions of their phone) will finally get on board with a camera that low end phones already have had for over a year now. And by the way, I love Apple (I have an iMac, new 17" MacBook Pro, iPod Nano, and iPod Touch 32 GB)...but I just don't think the iPhone is up to par yet (which is why I opted for a Nokia phone and an iPod Touch instead).
Nokias & Sony Ericssons actually have great cameras, especially Nokia with the Carl Zeiss opticals... The problem with the iPhone camera is that it takes totally decent pictures but ONLY in perfect conditions of light and stability.
Dude, you don't need to show off your Apple products to show how you "love" Apple.
Oh yes, I love Apple too, I have 2 iPod nanos, 2 iPod touches, and 2 iMacs.
i want to leave my cybershot at home.
i don't need another bulge in my pants.
and why am I a liar? I have my sources. That is probably what will happen :)
apple needs to stop trying to come out with the product that has everything that the palm pre will have..now that they know what pre will have they should blow it out the water! fuck 3.2 go staight for 4 or 5 unless 3.2 is a front facing camera that would be amazing! video chat and pay to go with your phone is the 2 featues that can take the competition away from the pre!
I couldn't care less about a camera on my phone. My phone has a 3.2MP sensor, and I've only used it twice since I've had the phone in the last year. Why? Because the image is so bad...
Even if the Iphone has a 5MP sensor, it wouldn't be a selling point for me. I like the iPhone for its apps. Not to carry it around and snap pix like there's no tomorrow. Or maybe it's just me. I don't dwell in the past. I don't look at photos. And if I like my Canon Powershot Elph for taking photos, because it actually does an excellent job at taking photos.
I really doesn't matter if they come with 20Mp camera if doesn't have at least a LED flash. without it, it becomes an useless high MP camera.
I don't care how many pixels it has, if it doesn't have a flash is useless.
I have high hopes that maybe the cameras sensors will be used on both sides of the phone refresh. One camera to face the cellphone user and the other to taking normal pictures. I would love to see some video chat integration. I mean think of an app that would allow you to stream your video of your self and the 5mp vid if posible.
yes because until apple decided to make a model names 3g, it was purpotrated in phone stores that 3g meant "VIDEO CALLS"
take 3 and some htc phones for example...
and i have an iphone 3g...
and yes a led flash would of made things a whole lot better.
I know this sounds a bit silly but could the 3.2mp be fore the front camera and the 5.0mp be for the back
There's little point in sticking a 3.2MP camera on the front ie. facing the user. The reason being that iChat or whatever they call their video conferencing solution is not going to encode and send video higher than VGA ie. 0.3MP.
Not only is that what ichat currently sends but it also could not be higher based on the uplink speed of current 3G networks.
The 3.2 is for the back, what the 5MP is for is anyones guess at this point. Though i wouldn't rule out a iPhone Pro of some kind.
