Apple iPhone 3.0 Event roundup

Well, the event is over, you can now smoke a cigarette or dip your fingers in ice if you were blogging the event like some of us.  Apple's got their page up and we'll post the video as soon as it becomes available.

What this event said to us more than anything is that Apple is about executing.  Sure, they are late to the game with many of these features, but they are executing them really well.  Push notifications could have come a few months earlier.  They could have sacrificed battery life for background applications but it wouldn't be the experience they wanted to deliver.  Cut/copy/paste and search both seem to be done right.

They are also delivering most (sans stereo Bluetooth and MMS) of these features onto what will be 2+ year old original iPhones.  Most phones don't even last 2 years but buying an original iPhone ($599 at the time) means that you will have a 2 year old phone that is pretty on par with everything else out there currently.    Not a bad price to pay IOHO - especially considering you can still sell that iPhone for $200.

Not everything was roses though.  We are seeing some mixed reactions throughout the blogosphere.  Vote below on your thoughts.

Also can anyone see what is in the writing on the iPhone 3.0 logo below?

I wish apple would allow a public beta of the new firmware. Let the consumers make the choice to test out the hardware.

Agreed, everyone should be able to beta test it

That would be a really bad idea. Could you imagine the complaints about bugs and lag from users expecting a "Gmail Beta" type experience!?

For PC software (i.e. PC browser such as Firefox) I totally agree but my phone is too sensitive. If my Firefox Alpha dies, I can always switch to a stable release of FF or use Safari. If my iPhone 3.0 beta dies on a bad day, I am in serious trouble. I would rather wait and have the bugs ironed out.

It's 99 dollars to join the program. I joined to make apps, and I'm enjoyed the benefits of a beta. Really though, the 99 is worth it just for the beta, IMO

Probably "Designed by Apple in California."

It says "iPhone OS 3.0 Software" :-P

I still don't understand how hardware as advanced as that of the 1st Gen iPhone isn't capable of running MMS.

Apple's partners want people to pay the extra $10 a month (or whatever the premium is) for the 3G data plan, if they want to send picture messages.

At least, that's my guess.

I personally like that they don't have MMS. That way I don't get charged 30cents a message.

I'd rather get the emails and go to the site to look at it.

If I pay $100 can dowload the 3.0 software now and
Install it on my iPhone?

you pay $100 NOT for the 3.0 software, but for a year's subscription to the iphone developer's programme. this means you can develop your own apps using the iphone sdk on your mac, and actually test the app on your dev iphone.

BE WARNED... you WON'T be able to DOWNGRADE back to 2.2.1 since it upgrades baseband.

and it's not guaranteed that apple will approve your application even if you're willing to pay, say if apple sees through your intent or sth like that

where is ichat? is anybody else bummed and/or confused as to why we dont have it yet?

My take is that ichat and other new features will be in the new hardware!

so does that mean video chat then? because other than video, ichat should be able to work on the the current iphones right?

That sounds like you're taking acid! iChat is all about software, and is independent of hardware implementation. Once you have tcp/ip, iChat is trvial. On the iPhone, the only other important part is known as "notification".

i think he meant that ichat would be release *with* the new hardware. (which might have a second camera for face to face videochats, as you probably know, there will be a service for videostreaming in the new SDK)

And -of course - they would make the video part in iChat exclusive to the new iPhone 3rd gen. (but obviously letting older model users being able to see video during chats)

also, it would have an better PR-impact if the new iPhone 3rd gen would have such a feature. it would be more like a "BOOM, iCHAT WITH VIDEO!" then "ok, this is ichat, here you type in the message and... yeah, well that's it... the new boring ichat without any ground breaking features" (see what i did there? video chat on mobile phones? ground breaking? hehehe.... look how far we've come.)

I wonder how you can say that apple has 'executed these features really well.' Have you had a chance to run the new version of the OS on an iPhone? Have you used such a phone for a couple of weeks and given it a thorough going-over? Have you played with several apps developed for this new OS version, and seen how the new features work on the various iApps?

I seem to recall a lot of talk about 'push' on iPhone OS 2.0. It was a fraud and a failure and was dropped. I seem to recall a lot of features on MobileMe that sounded really really good, and didn't work well at all. I seem to recall Steve Jobs publicly apologizing and extending MobileMe subscribers' coverage for one month ... two times over!

Let's not go nuts over how well these features work until we have the phones in hand running the new apps and see -- shall we?

I wasn't totally blown away by the presentation either. But at the same time that didn't stop it from being impressive. Ultimately, a lot of these features should have been in the 1.0 OS in the first place.

The push notifications features though I will give Apple the benefit of the doubt. They had a good excuse for it being late that being they had to scrap what they had and start from scratch.
If they had to start from scratch because what they had wasn't scalable enough then you should really cut them some slack on that point.

What do you mean my text in the picture?

How can Apple not have enabled ONE ibox for email? Pathetic.

we got copy and paste, but did will it still work in Safari with the double tap???

Cut/Paste will work cross-program. Example: you can copy something in Safari and paste it in Mail.

1. Redmond, start your copiers again!
2. Ballmer, your yet to be released Windows Mobile 6.5 looks like an IBM punch card compared to our iPhone 3.0 OS. Now go suck monkey balls!!!

At this point you shouldn't even bother to mention windows. Of course they can't compete!
What you should really be talking about is does this give a potential customer thinking about getting a Palm Pre enough reason to wait for the iphone 3.0 or get a Palm Pre with its very impressive WebOS this coming Q2.

Palm Pre? WebOS? What are they supposed to do?

I still have my eye on the Palm Pre after this 3.0 preview. My contract with AT&T is up next year. Unless the next iPhone hardware revision is VERY compelling, I won't update my hardware (and, therefore, won't update my contract if the 3rd iPhone has similar upgrade policy as the 2nd). So, Apple has iPhone OS 4.0 to convince most of us from swapping to Sprint and the Pre. If I could jump ship this summer, though, I'd probably do it.

I think this is more important than Martin Luther King's 'i have a dream...' speech

Most important day of my life!

Has anyone noticed that in the presentation the capture of the iPhones showed a different dock (metal-like) ????? BTW I haven't read all the comments so maybe someone already said this...
