Mickey Mouse's company is excited at potential of the Apple iPad

As expected, Walt Disney’s weight is firmly behind Apple’s iPad, with company president and chief executive, Robert Iger, singing the product’s praises during the company’s financial call last night.

He’s expecting to utilise the device to market whole new ways to animate our lives, it seems, saying "We find that the iPad has a lot of potential. It could be a game changer in terms of enabling us to create essentially new forms of content. It will be a great device to play games and watch videos because of the quality of the screen.”

As noted by Seeking Alpha, he added, “The interactivity that it will allow on a portable device with such a high quality screen is going to enable us to really start developing products that are different than the products you see on an internet-connected computer or on a TV set and digital reader that we're talking about.”

He continued: “We’ve put in a marketplace a digibooks product through our Disney publishing group just recently. We haven’t really marketed in earnest because while its not really in beta we are still working through some of the issues that you deal with when you are launching new product like that and we were developing it primarily for the computer screen and we started developing it for the iTunes I should say for the iPhone, iPod touch platform and suddenly this device comes along and provides us with an even more robust technological platform that makes the interactivity that we are going to provide things like read along simple animation music to just sort of come to life.”

(Results: Disney revenue rose one percent to $9.74-billion - analysts had predicted $9.66 billion. Net profit hit $844 million.)

Iger’s thoughts are also being reflected within the comics industry, where sources claim publishers large and small are already considering the promise of the iPad - that’s why so many developers have popped up to serve that market, but we anticipate some eventual consolidation between comic services for iPhone/iPad.

However, not everyone in the creative industry thinks it’s all so great - take a look at these comments from the great David Lynch...

Way to go with the strawman argument, Mr Lynch. I don't recall anyone (Apple or whoever) claiming that the iPhone was the greatest way to experience a movie. It's a convenience thing. Just because you *can* do something, doesn't mean it's automatically the best way to do it.
Conversely, just because a particular method of viewing a film may not give the greatest experience, should not automatically rule it out from ever being used.
Classic case of an argument that has been bent to fit a premise that was non-existent in the first place.

Fail.

They also revealed that Disney is working on casual games for the iPad, and that it would release comic books from Marvel on the device. I know that a lot of people wanted the comic books and was surprised it wasn't mentioned.

Rings a bell?

The iPad's screen is just short of 720p so the iPad needs it's own unique format - WAY WAY LAME!

Disney loves the iPad because with the iPad you have to IMAGINE all the video on your favorite sites and Disney is the imagination company you know.
